Correct me if I am wrong... but I believe the R-Line sits ever so slightly lower because it has different springs. the main difference however is the approach/ departure angle, which should be smaller due to the r-line lower valence on the front bumper and also the trim on the rear bumper around the exhaust tips
From all of the publications I can find online including media.vw.com it looks like every model for 2014 is 7.9"

You still have that?? Thought you were selling?
You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers! It's the one in the Lower 48 that stays with the Airstream. Pearl and the Beluga. I have an almost identical one here in Alaska, but black. It's named Obsidian. Those who discern will note on the Beluga that the sticker in the upper left hand corner is a Native design for the sun. "The sky was yellow and the sun was blue." Rock in Peace, Phil.

Facts:
  • You don't know what you are talking about.
  • R-Line suspension is lower.... I don't care enough to find evidence, but off top of my head, it's 10mm lower. Check PR code and then manual if you care to argue.
  • As per his mention, he also gave you the clues with regards to approach\departure due to body kit bits... you don't know, because you owned a caveman spec, not a fancy Rline... go look at one!
  • You can't be lower, add a body kit designed to look sporty, and maintain clearance.

Ahh so assuming what you're saying is accurate it's 7.6" ground clearance not 7.9" 🤭

Am I losing my mind remembering that you said you're selling your airstream and also your touareg??

Bruh... you're just not getting it.....
That's straight suspension drop.
Here are the numbers, just for you.
Front -10mm, Rear - 16mm
Then you have the "ground effects" that chew up the angles

Different market, so specifications may be different - but in the UK the 2016 specifications show R-Line is 25mm lower than the base SE while the Escape (4XMotion) is 10mm higher than the base SE.

Must be mixing me up with someone else. We use this combo about 5 months every year - shoulder seasons in spring and fall. No plans to change that yet. Maybe when I am getting ready to put it in storage for a while you're thinking otherwise.

7.9" of ground clearance isn't sufficient? That's about what a Tahoe has, new Ford bronco, Jeep Grand Cherokee etc and none of those things have ground clearance issues 🤔
That’s really not much ground clearance… but a lot of traditional solid axle body on frame vehicles are reporting clearance from the lowest point on the diff or suspension when everything actually delicate is much higher.

I’ve found that for your basic southwest desert sandy road, a stock Touareg will go everywhere, but it will be scraping the underbelly a lot more than ideal.

"ground clearance" is generally measured from the lowest point of the automobile. So assuming r-line has a body kit that hangs lower, that would be the lowest point of the car.

Yes you're definitely right. And you're right that most ROW markets do indeed indicate a drop with the r-line, but I don't believe that to be accurate in NAR market Touareg

I would have bet money it was you that made this post because I remember being in complete shock that you said you were selling your airstream and then your Touareg. There's only one more person in here famous for camping on the forum and that's @EddieB - and he definitely sold his camper and Touareg

As I said above generally "ground clearance" is measured from the lowest point of the automobile, which would often be a bumper or body kit.

Dragging your underbody, while not ideal, is usually fine if you have a good 4 wheel drive system and good tires

Believe what you want to believe.. ordered replacement rear springs last year through the dealer, the springs for the R-line are a different part.

The springs for every package are different; lux, vr6, hybrid, cayenne etc. Most of it has to do with spring rate.
