I've done two wheel bearings, one front and one rear, and it is a lot of work, replaced them with F*A*G OEM bearings. The "growling" has not ceased. I also replaced the front left CV shaft.

Here's two pictures of the removed wheel bearing. The first one shows an accumulation of metal dust which must affect the ABS system. The second one shows the sensor inserted. It's interesting the "eye" does not face the bearing so the sensor picks up from the back side. You can see small cutout in the casting which is at the bottom so it is possible to blow out or pressure wash out the face of the bearing from the sensor hole. I'm constantly amazed at the engineering on these things! View attachment 266179 View attachment 266180
Bummer to go through all that work with the bearings and not resolve the growling. What's the next step?

I'm still going to replace the other two bearings and other front CV axle. The bearings were a little dry and my rig has 200,000 miles on it so it may be them. I replaced the driveshaft bearing and installed an upgraded center support about 30,000 miles ago but I'm still going to replace the entire rear driveshaft with a GKN Leobro I found at AutohausAZ. (GKN Loebro 7L6521102Q, 28055 Drive Shaft; Transfer Case to Differential - VW | 7L6521102B 7L6521102C 7L6521102D 7L6521102E) The CV joints may be going bad on that but it's very difficult to determine, again 200,000 miles may be a service limit. I'm also going to install an upgraded EuroWise center support (GEN 1 - DRIVESHAFT CENTER SUPPORT BEARING UPGRADE - CAYENNE/TOUAREG (2) and put the other one on my 2nd V-10 when I go through it. I found another 2006 with 125,000 miles on it.

I'll post some photos of this giant press I'm using for the bearings, it's impressive.

Nice. That's a big ol' work horse. I bet there's not too much it can't press out.
