Hi All,

I just received my notice about the class action settlement relating to several models of VWs and Audis over the years that experienced problems with sunroof valves/drain being defective resulting in water getting inside the cabin and causing damage. Looks like I'll have to dig up all my receipts for the repair costs incurred replacing a good part of the electrical system that shorted. Even if I don't qualify for damages, I feel good knowing that enough people had the same problem that VW is now admitting was a defect. Anyone else in this boat?

I got the letter as well. I had two A8 in the past 6 years and still have A4. Always cleaned the drain plugs myself. They are purely designed, and always get clogged. Never had any major damage to any of my cars thought. If you still have receipts for repair costs you should qualify for reimbursement. Good luck!

Location of Drain Plugs

I received this yesterday as well; I have been having leaking into my touareg whenever I take it to a particular soft cloth carwash, it leaks into the housing that contains the sunroof controls, etc (only does it when large amounts of water are being dumped/held on the roof). Wondering if this is a side effect of the plugs being clogged potentially? I haven't had a look around up there yet, are these easy to spot and clean for someone who hasn't done it before? Any info is appreciated.

I got the letter(s) as well. Lucky I've never had the problem but I've been a nut about checking and cleaning the drains and the prior owner must have keep the Treggie in a garage. The service notice went right into the manual and I will make a point of mentioning it to the service tech when the big boy goes in for his 80K service.

Well everyone be sure to check, inspect and recheck! The clogged drain issue happened to me and it's not "COOL WATER"! So now whenever it rains I grab my umbrella and hold it over the EGG! RAIN RAIN GO AWAY PLEASE COME BACK ANOTHER DAY! LOL! Gotta love it or just leave the Egg Alone!SMILE

I have had the same problem on my 06. there is a TSB to seal around the sunroof cartridge or I think replace, to keep the water from entering the headliner sunroof console...

That mailed notice caught my attention. Since first hearing about the cowl drain clogs I look for two steady streams from the underside each time I wash mine. VW got nipped due to the lack of that detail in the manual but honestly, I don't recall a warning about sunroof drains in my Land Rover or X3 manual either. I'll do some hunting tomorrow and find the sunroof drain ports.

What a mickey-mouse "fix"!!! They send you a new page for the manual and THAT'S IT? Is nobody else floored by this? I expected at least a free CHECK of the drain by a dealership. This is ridiculous!!

My 911T leaked like a sieve and I never found the leak. T-Man, I would take your Treg to your dealer with the class action notice and have them show you what needs to be checked...

reimburse?

received my notice.... funny, anytime I parked with the car facing downhill... and had a good rain... it sounded like a waterbed when I drove it... the water just sloshed back in forth inside the right side of the body... would take several days to a week to drain... finally

took it to the local vw dealer a yr ago... acted like it was a novelty to the touareg... ran some water in the front drain pan in the open sun roof and no drainage.... I thought it was fluke ... then had it happen couple more times and took it to the local body shop and they cleared them... all four for 50$... much less than dealer...

my question... feel vw should reimburse me for taking care of the drains and also have various water stains on the roof liner.... have no idea what sort of effect the water had to various components that may of been awash by gallons of trapped water in the body panels...

I really feel they should pay for any/all damage to the roofliner and related components especially since they have a sunroof cartridge fix that IMO is a self-acknowledged design/assembly fault and independent of any owner (in)action and/or maintenance

To be honest, the envelope wasn't clearly marked in my opinion, I almost threw it away as I believe the return address was water ingress settlement, which meant nothing to me.

Here's the website in case you threw your package away.

https://wateringresssettlement.com/

I had complete electrical failure, car wouldn't start, wouldn't shift out of park to be towed, all sorts of lights flashing on dash, it took my service reps several days to trace the problem back to the drains, despite me printing up strings from this forum showing the potential cause. The reps told me the drains were actually crimped - and that it probably happened during install, which is why the water did not drain properly. Don't know if that's true. My extended warranty did not cover the repairs because the electrical failure was caused by water damage...and the warranty excludes water damage, even if the result of a manufacturing defect. Go figure. I agree though, a silly one page addition to the owner's manual is hardly a resolution.

Just got a class action settlement notice in the mail for this very same issue.
Looks like its a modification to the proposed settlement....

I suspect others may be getting this too.

Doesn't impact me though as I have never had this issue.
