I've owned my '05 Touareg since '07, 13yrs so far and experienced many of the now infamous technical. ahem, let's just 'peculiarities' like the stepper motor issue or the driveshaft bearing issue. At only 154,000 miles the Treg runs great though there does appear to be a new condition coming on by the recent presence of small pink drops of fluid on the garage floor. The transmission and differentials have never been serviced.

So I've begun looking at other vehicles, decided against the Atlas due in part to reviews on this forum, and there's this 2017 Cayenne for $38k that caught my eye. Does the Cayenne have the same kind of maintenance history as the Touareg? It's a beautiful vehicle with a lot of extras I don't especially need and I'm wondering if there's a significant downside to all the extras with regard to upkeep and maintenance?

I consider the Touareg a historical vehicle for how it changed the way SUVs looked when it was introduced in 2004. Back then there were not many, if any, vehicles built and shaped like the Touareg. I am torn between keeping and restoring what I have or trading up to something more recent and at least as good as the Touareg.

Seeking your opinion.

Do you do maintenance yourself? One major downside with the Porsche is Ross tech VCDS is not fully compatible as Porsche uses their own diagnostic software still.

If you like to do a lot of maintenance and repairs yourself, then I would be looking at a newer Audi or Volkswagen. If you don't mind taking it to a shop for maintenance, then the Cayenne is a nice ride.

I do most maintenance myself and own a vag-com cable. I'm dreading having to service the transmission, transfer case, and differential fluids. It needs to be done but I don't have a lift and I don't trust most shops do do the job right so I'm kinda stuck. It's hard enough to get the oil changed by a competent oil change shop. There's just not a lot of touaregs on the road, which I like but then there's not a lot of shops that know how to work on them.

The front diff is simple and so is the back diff. I have not done my center diff yet but I don't think it will be a problem based on the write-ups here.

I am going to unhook the atf cooler and use the two lines to do a bucket flush of the transmission soon. It is also pretty easy.

Now, the oil change on the AXQ V8, well it is not hard. It is just tedious, long, and complicated. Easier to change the front diff oil.

I have a Cayenne GTS, well it’s a hand me down from my wife. We chose the GTS as it has air suspension. It was about twice the price of the similar Touareg but much nicer in so many ways. (Although my wife says as nice as the Cayenne is the V10tdi Touareg is more exhilarating to drive, her words)

there really is not a VCDS equivalent for the Porsche. I bought the Duramax (or something like that) cable that was recommended by RossTech. But it really is just a code reader.
Porsche service is expensive, if you don’t have the ability to do basic maintenance or the ability to afford to pay the dealer you should pass. I would not trust a specialist shop to do the work as there are many procedures that have to be followed that a non dealer would skip. I know that Porsche service is done by the book and the tech has to spend the paid for time working on the vehicle. Yes, you pay dearly for that service but your car will most likely be serviced properly.

Other than PCM updates we have never been to the dealer out of warranty. But it was a $102k car so I would hope that it would be trouble free. A lot of used one I have seen look to have been driven hard. I’m sure if you look long enough and know what you are looking at you may find a good one.
Thanks for the insight. The Cayenne is so damn fine and I'm jealous each time I see one on the road. Now I'm looking at 2017 Touareg TDI Lux, original Mfg sticker price $59,270usd. It's got 80,000 miles on it and they want the same amount I paid for my '05 v6 in 2007, $27k.

A bucket flush? Hadn't thought of that though it sounds like it would do the job. the only difference perhaps is not cleaning the magnets.

Transfer Case is just as easy as the diffs, just drain and refill.. you can do same for gearbox a few times within 100 miles without unhooking anything or taking anything off and getting 99% of the old out.. tho every other lube job on the drivetrain you should probably clean the magnets and replace the ATF filter.. so at ~150k you'd be due to drop the gearbox pan, but its really not that much more work.. less work than pulling cooler lines and bleeding all that back out after.

2016 was the last year for TDI in a Touareg in NA. If it is a 2017...no way it is a TDI in NA.

I was going to say, if you like the Touareg why not find a used 2015-2017. Great ride, not as many maintenance headaches as the first gen. While the Cayenne is certainly nicer, and some will say has better reliability, there is a Porsche "tax" on maintaining it.

And think of the positives. I probably see 5-10 Cayenne on my commute every day. I might see 2 or 3 Touareg in a week.

You sir are correct! My mistake. I was only just beginning to consider looking at another Touareg after reconsidering getting a Cayenne which I thought would be my next car. My '05 v6 runs great and didn't need replacing and if I did it should be for something better to justify, at least in my mind, getting rid of it.

The idea to look for an upgrade started while installing a Kenwood DNX996XR headunit and CMOS-230 backup camera where none existed before. The COVID lockdown motivated me to the do the install now and I had all the stuff since last Fall. The installation took me a week off-and-on and went very well. I used the exisiting wire harness for the CD Changer to run the camera and backup trigger - worked great. I cannot believe I didn't do it sooner, I mean I only drove it for 13yrs.

Ironically, now I'm selling it because I purchased the '2016' Touareg TDI LUX off Carvana. You can see it now at their web store marked as sale pending. I pick it up Monday
