Just realized that the two interior rear seat overhead lights are not working. Doesn't matter where I move either switch, they just don't come on. Seems like too much of a coincidence for both to be burnt out... Any thoughts on what this might be?

hi i was wondering if you ever found the issue with your car interior lights?
mine seems to have the exact same problem. Rear over seat lights dont come on when the car is unlocked nor when the rear doors are opened. They only work when the ignition is on and when the switch is moved to the fully on positon, they still dont work when the door is opened. Also they come on very dull when the front sun visor lights are on.

Has anyone ever solved this problem? I'm getting the same thing. I should note that it was like this when I bought it used. There is also no power going to my rear hatch lid. ALL other interior lights are working as expected BTW.

Hey Stueveone! I have the exact same problem with those exact lights too!! I just pulled my whole headliner to replace saggy fabric and figured this is the time to try to fix this. As of now, forum hasn't found the problem yet. Still looking for a solution!! Help!

I had the same problem with the rear interior lights on my audi 01 A6. I popped the light out with a putty knife and small screwdriver and found corrosion on the switch wiring connections inside the light. I resoldered and it fixed the problem.

Haven't troubleshot it yet. I think corrosion, as johnk pointed out, sounds like a possibility. Anybody know off hand if these passenger dome and rear hatch switches run through the overhead console/ dome light electronics? This area is particularly prone to corrosion due to the sunroof leak issue with these rigs. Wonder if that could be causing things to go sour?

Happy detecting superflydisco! We are all eager to see if you find anything!

OK. So after some inspection, No corrosion, however, as I was inspecting the main RED harness that feeds power to everything electrical mounted in the headliner (interior lights, sun visor lights, rear park sensor light, compass module). The RED male end attached to the top of the headliner has 10 wire connections with all 10 pins being fed wire. The female end still hanging from the roof next to the overhead console, only has 7 wires going to it. Pins 2,6,and 7 are empty. Something from the factory screwed up?

My comments on Audi A6 aren't really applicable, since it looks like everything goes through the front headliner control on the Treg. I would check for voltage at the rear lights. If there's power, the only things that might be bad are bulbs or diodes in the rear lights over the doors (04 Touareg).

I looked at my 04 wiring diagram and found the red 10 pin connector T10l. Pin 5 goes to front reading light (blue white stripe). Pin 4 goes to rear left reading light bulb and rear left reading light switch and right and left makeup mirror lights(red). Pin 2 goes to left and right rear reading light diodes(green). That's all I could find on the interior lighting section. Trying to follow the Bentley wiring diagrams give me a headache.

Correction on empty pins on harness: Pins 3,6 and 7 are empty in harness mentioned above.

So I replaced all my interior lights with LEDs for better light and to see if the lower voltage draw would do anything for the rear reading lights. Well,,,,,,,The new lighting is awesome!!! No go on the rear reading light or the tailgate light. Bummer. Still a mystery...

Another mystery evolves!! So after replacing all my interior lights with LEDs, I just noticed the vanity lights (still original bullbs) in the visors don't come on anymore, but when I slide the cover open to the mirror, the center console lights comes on. WTF?? Also, the rear read lights also (still) do not come on, but effect the brightness of the center console lights as I move the switch on the rear reading lights back and forth. Where is thee electrical guru to help solve these lighting gremlins??

It may be worth checking the ground (earth) side of the lighting circuit. Usually a high resistance ground will cause some of the effects you mention.
Thanks Malaudi, I have drawn the same conclusion, but I have no idea where the ground is. I don't think it's above the headliner anywhere cause I've just replaced my headliner and looked hard for a ground point. Could it be behind the fuse panel somewhere?

I'm sorry I have the CR model and could only point you in the right direction for grounding points on that, but there is one close to the front interior light assemly in mine. It wasn't immediately obvious and I wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't been looking for it. But if you've removed the headliner and not seen it, I'd check in the vicinity of where the ceiling wiring bundle goes down one of the A pillars near the fuse panel as you say.

Hopefully not too difficult to get at.

I know this is an old post but I will give you the possible solution to your problem. At least, it worked for me. I recently replaced the headliner by myself, but the rear lights didn't work. The rear lights were pretty dimmed and sometimes didn't work at all. I found that the only way to make them work was to open the two visor lights. Something weird. Well, I took back the visors again because it was the only part that made sense to me where cables could be in a short circuit. I found that I had broken the visor cable with the screw. It is the problem that probably many have or had. I fixed the cable and at this time I made sure that the cable was in the right spot. Also, After this fix, I replaced a 5 amp blown fuse and that fixed the whole problem.

Visor Cable, only the cable going inside the hole, the connector going beside and hiding on the headliner.

I hope this helps.
Thank you.

Thanks carlosgraphic for the images and the clarification! That might be why my fuse holders were empty; somehow they shorted and someone just took them out. When I got the car the fuse holders were empty, and I just needed to put them back in. I didn't want to reply to say "FIXED! I had no fuses!" because that would be dumb, but I did put a fuse in EVERY empty slot (if there were metal connectors) and that made it work. I'll keep the sun visor wire shorts in mind though, and hopefully this will help others in the future.
