I'm running 18x9.5 et49 and 285/60 ridge grapplers. moving to a 33x12.50 at the end of the year, once i get the lift in.
To match stock (and the stock speedo), a sidewall aspect ratio for a tire that wide would be 50%. Going to 60% (the "60" in "285/60") is much taller and really cleans up the wheel gap. I think I may try this with my next set of tires.

FYI: Your speedometer is way off. If you are traveling at 60MPH, the speedo will read 55MPH. So, if you are targeting a somewhat reasonable 80 in a 70MPH zone, the cop's radar will track you at 87MPH, 17MPH over. That's almost a guaranteed ticket.

I recall seeing an option to change the tire height for speed calculations via VAGCOM. Not 100% on that, though.

Oh and since this is such an awesome thread, I'll drop this gem: Panamera wheels bolt right up to our Touaregs...even STAGGERED setups. Just add the appropriate taller tires.

I'm currently running staggered 19x9 front and 19x10 rear Panamera Turbo wheels on my 2012 Touareg now. No need for spacers. No issues. No rubbing. No fender-rolling.

Lots of complements and thumbs-ups at the dealership when I take it in for service.

For some reason I’m not seeing the pic?

Also, about my roof rack:

Bars (not rails, sorry): Whispbar (Whispbar was bought by Yakima a few years ago). I bought them from a member here on ClubTouareg. Very low.
Box: Thule Motion XT Alpine.
Height: 6'5" using stock spring suspension

I can get in and out of my home, work, and many parking deck garages with it, no problem.

Is that rack quiet? I have a Audi Q7 basket that I used on my CC, I would line to start using it again.

is that coming from the stock 20s? I thought it was only 6.5 for me. Regardless, That’s what Waze was saying last night. So ¯\( ˘͡ ˘̯)
The calculation was based off of stock 18s.

GPS speed is not very precise. It doesn't take into consideration any curves you've traveled between readings. The GPS computer will always assume that you made a straight line from point A to point B where it took readings. There could be a curve between points A and B and you traveled that in 10s and the app calculates that you were traveling 85MPH in a straight line (A to B). When actually, the road was curved and you went 2MPH faster to get from A to B.

I've done a lot of research in this area and even have a couple of apps in the iOS app store for the cycling community (that are heavy with arithmetic calculations) where this comes up a lot: GPS speedometers vs wired speedometers with magnets on the wheel. The latter is infinitely more accurate...but not as cool as GPS.

I don't have a sunroof in my truck, but from what I can tell from the windows, yeah, it's quiet. I didn't notice any differences in sound when I installed it. I did notice a difference when I put my Audi OEM rails (made by Thule) on my A4 Avant.

So, yeah, I'd say that the Whispbar (and whatever Yakima rebranded the tech as now) system is very quiet. Now sure how loud your basket will be, though.

I love how low these bars sit.

Here is how the Whispbar system looks. It sits damn-near flush with the side rails. This can be problematic if the "claws" of your box reach down too far.

Looks like Yakima took the Whispbar tech they bought and rebranded it as "RailBar"

The Yakima RailBar is the premium crossbar choice for vehicles with factory equipped raised siderails. This crossbar has no bar overhang, so your vehicle will have a clean, modern aesthetic, looking like it came from the factory with the RailBars already installed. The sleek low-profile shape of the crossbar and its seamless integration to your vehicle's siderails maximizes strength, while minimizing drag and reducing noise levels to nearly zero. RailBars are sold as individual bars, not in pairs.
Oh, but if you have a sunroof, you cannot use either of these systems as they will prevent the rear tilt of the glass from going up to it's full extension. So, if you have a sunroof, I'd stick with stock height crossbars...or don't tilt the sunroof :D

C, how close are the roof box “clamps” to the actual roof? Looks really close. Also looks way freaking awesome!

Thanks!

It's clooooose. Like a few millimeters away on my front driver's side corner. But, this is really a function of the box that you use. And even if your box's claws reach down too far, you can simply just add some sort of padding under the box where it meets the crossbars to raise it up a smidge.

See my note above about sunroofs. Bars like these may not let you tilt the rear of the sunroof. I don't have a sunroof so I can't confirm this or not.

I have the Yakima whispbars on my VW passat wagon and my Yakima box claws are like a paper thickness away from contact. I’m using the factory bars on the Touareg but I’d like the box to sit a bit lower. So I might try the Thule version of the whispbars. They aren’t as aggressive as the Yakima but still pretty low profile.

Ah ok, I have a pano and use it often. The box doesn’t have “clamps”, it uses the slot on top of the cross bar like the Thule system.

Low is the way to go. I don't even notice them when I approach the car from the side.

I keep them on the Touareg permanently. I did not keep my OEM Audi crossbars on my A4. I loved the functionality, but only installed them when I needed them. I found them to be noisy and generally unsightly. If I had the Whispbars (or similar) back then, I would have left them on permanently, too.

Not sure how the panoramic roof works with regards to tilting and whatnot.

Maybe a trip down to the local outfitter would clear up your questions. I'm sure they answer these questions all day every day. They'll probably even test fit some crossbars for you. The sizes are pretty generic (S/M/L). You micro-adjust inside of the black cuffs on each end.

I got my box in Florida (you are in FL, right?). They'll be roof rack outfitters near the water to outfit those into watersports.

The Thule aero bar which is similar to the whispbar sat too close for comfort when I opened my pano. Not super sure how the whispbar attaches.

Also the clamp straps sucked with Thule. I really like the oem bars.
