I owned a 1997 Lexus LX450. Weight, size, off-road, very similar to my '07 Touareg. My LX450 had full locking diffs, and was a beast off-road. I use to say that it could have pulled a house off its foundation.
I would compare the Touareg to the Toyota Land Cruiser, both off-road and highway.

Nick,

How can the Range Rover compare to the Treg if it does not have the (absolutely crutial) Low gear and diff locks? ;)
Where do you get that from? There is a thing called the "options list" when ordering. Just like on the Egg. Here is one link that I had saved in my bookmarks for when I was about to buy one. Range Rover Sport On & Off Road Test

My sister has the Range Rover Sport- It's a good car. It hasnt had any major problems but:
It is slow. slow. slow.. slow. It does not feel slow, but after driving my 'reg v8, it feels lethargic.
It's a rover.. don't even question it's 4wd abilities. They're great.
THERE IS NO HEADROOM. I get it that im I am tall, at 6'4 but I basically have to hunch my shoulders while driving it.
I hate at night, with the green dash lights... it feels very ford. but the overall interior, is pretty nice and high quality.
Good gas mileage, 21 on the hwy.
I hated the green too

It is slow, but that is why they have the S.C model for a few more pennies.
I'm 6.4 myself. The Egg is nice and roomy no doubt.

Good question, I'm not sure :^o

I always thought (from conversation's I've had) that the Range Rover is not equipped with low and diff locks. To get that stuff one would have to step over to the Land Rover!? I guess I'm wrong.

Thanks for correcting me on that. If Range Rover has the same off-road computer system that Land Rover has then I'm game :D

We don't have the 4Runner in South Africa, but we do have the Fortuner, which I think is very similar in spec and ability.

What is rated as "off-road" ? If it is real hairy stuff (between gravel roads and rock crawling), I would certainly rate the Toyotas as 'more capable'.

For the normal family type of excursion, the 'Treg gets my vote. Safety, comfort, roadholding, luxury appointments etc all count in the Treg's favour.

Do the compete in the same sector, though?
The prices are very different too, are they not?

Last I read was the Terrain package comes only on the V6 TDI and it is the old 6 spd tranny with a transfer case. The 8 spd tranny has no low range available for it.

Could you post your source please? There is no more 6 speed transmission available on the new T2. (2011) All press releases from Vw and also all brochures state that "ALL" 2011 touaregs come with only 8 speed transmissions. That includes the touareg with the terrain Tech PACKAGE.

Feel free to look through this Whole PDF even with Terrain Tech package and 4Xmotion all models are equipped with 8 speed transmission.

This is a funny thread. Range Rover and Land Rover are all pretty much the same thing in terms of the internals regarding 4x4 since 2005. You cannot get either with-out low range and a locking center differential. You could always choose the option for a locking rear differential on any Rover (full size, sport or lr3/4) On the Supercharged versions, the locking rear diff was standard on all years. On lr3's it was included in any car under the "Heavy Duty" option which included the rear diff and a full size spare rather than a doughnut.

On all of them the locking center or rear was not user definable but rather automatically selected by the computers based on when it sensed it necessary in certain "terrain response" modes.

One of the posts above lists the RRSport as a street car, well, most of these silly cars, ALL Touaregs included, when in stock form from the dealer, are "street" cars simply by nature of the ridiculous wheels and tires. This is however an easy thing to change on all models.

No offense meant, but the Rovers, all of them, are without doubt more "capable" in the worst off road situations simply by nature of having longer wheel travel/articulation made quite capable by way of cross valved air suspension and terrain response computer nannies. Now, how much more may often be slight but when you need it, I suppose then it's a big deal. You may have to work hard to find those situations though.

I wouldn't doubt the engines in the Touareg are better though.

If the question is not about which are more fun to drive at speed (Touareg with air and RRS supercharged), which are more comfortable, etc. (full size RR / Touareg), or which has more cargo space (LR3 then full size RR, then RRS & Touareg), or which are built with better materials (Touareg, full size RR, RRS/lr4, lr3 last)...then you really have to allow non stock tires and wheels and the rovers all surpass the Touareg, sadly, because the Touareg is really cool, especially now with the economical V6 tdi and the amazingly fun V10 tdi.

I know nothing at all about the 4 Runner but I would bet, it allows for bigger tires than any of the VW/Rover options due to a different suspension design. The Touareg is really limited to a 31.5" tire +/- due to body and suspension arm design, all of the rovers have the same basic dimensional limitations in the wheel wells and the most you can get without never rubbing, is the same 31.5" bfg at ko, but no rubbing at all, whereas the Touareg rubs a little at full turns and would rub more at full articulation, but it's articulation being so limited, keeps this from happening.

The lr3 with equal rubbing can use a 32.5" tire. With a cheap swap to fool the air suspension height controllers, the lr3 can run 32.5" tires with no rubbing but then sits higher after the mod which is not entirely safe. There is no reason to try that mod on a Touareg because the driver can already maximize the suspension height using the dial up to certain speeds whereas the lr's all require slower speeds and other intervention before max height is induced.

Now, regardless of whether the 4 Runner comes with a rear locker or not, ARB has been making bomber lockers for the Toyotas for many years and that should be considered too. Just because a vehicle does or does not come stock with this or that feature, doesn't mean it should be ruled out if the aftermarket makes it equally as viable. For such hard core things, neither the Rovers nor the VW allow for that level of modification. However, the VW has nearly zero aftermarket options while the rovers have quite a lot though still limited when compared to older Land Cruisers, rovers, Jeeps, etc.

So, there you go. The 4x4 capabilities of the vw are however, enough for most people in most situations. So, which one is better may be irrelevant in real life. Get a v6 tdi and bring less crap.

Wow. Incredible post.

Thanks a LOT for setting myself and anyone else here straight :D

I am impressed that the Range Rover's come that well equipped. Maybe I'll be open to upgrading one day now (although I still like the look of the LR4 better).

I just saw this Jeep a few mins ago at the MEC in North Vancouver. I don't know what it is but I really want one (flame away). It had an awesome winch on the front and some crazy bar/lever under the steering wheel (second pic). Anybody know what it might be for?

I don't know what that bar is but the vehicle looks like one of the best 4x4 "values" availble these days, the Jeep Rubicon Unlimited.

It comes stock with 32" bfg mt tires, I forget about lockers, may be a factory option but from ARB it's only about $900 per locker plus an air compressor with switches for the dash.

It's on solid axles front and rear so can be lifted as high as you like via springs and damper kits from ARB or elsewhere.

These things new, totally loaded are still only in the $30k's !!!! If you don't mind a very, very basic interior in terms of materials, then you might love it. I think they can be ordered in 6 spd manual too!

That's an aftermarket rear bumper, likely the front too, and rack with support bars and ladder but what's cool is the aftermarket is very deep for those things. I think there are two engine options as well - you might even be able to spec a diesel.

Isn't it a Jeep Wrangler? I am on the (Canadian) website now and there is no Rubicon.

I love my Touareg, but I really need something I can beat off-road, and this might be it. Price is agreeable even after fully modding it like the one above.

In the US, it's listed as "Wrangler Unlimited" Apparently "Rubicon" is a build package that may be called something else or you have not gone deep enough to see yet. I found that under "build", it only shows up when "4x4" is selected.

This is clearly the most affordable / well equipped 4x4. I didn't realize you "have" a Touareg - by all means, keep it, travel in it, etc but take this out to places where you might accidentally lean on a tree or boulder.

I looked and could not find it but it was one of the first press releases and it specifically said the 4xmotion was essentially going to be the system from the previous gen. That was to include the 6 spd tranny with transfer case and was only going to be available on the V6TDI. It could be they changed their minds, but it does not matter since offroad is not going to be available in NA anyhow at least for now. I did read that early on and specs could have changed since then.

Not sure where you are getting your info from, but the Range Rover has them...it also has air suspension.

That was the idea...

Keep the Touareg and beat on this. I might drive down the hill now and check one out/inquire. I just hate bugging the salespeople when I'm probably not going to buy :(
If you're just going to beat on it why buy a new one? You can probably get a 1 year old one for 1/2 the cost of a new one....
