Well, my 39 month lease is almost up and it's time to say good-bye to my Black V6. In the past three years, it has proved to be a very worthwhile investment, comfortable ride, fine-looking vehicle, and unique vehicle on the road.

When I shopped the '06, I decided to lease based on the troubles in some '04s and '05s. My conclusion here is that they finally worked out the kinks by '06 as I didn't have the heartache that some have had. I also realize that the trouble vehicles always have owners who rightly want to expose the problems.

For me, I'm just exposing the positives and some observations (and a few issues)

Some notes:
- The V6 needed just a tad more horsepower. With more than two adults, it struggled
- The interior is impeccable IMO. I still am amazed at how well done VW does interiors, especially after having to rent a new Fusion. (someone aptly described the feel of Ford interiors as 'Fischer Price'... very accurate). It has held up very well.
- It's not a full-sized SUV. Go buy something else and don't bother whining about the size. It's very comfortable for 4 adults but you're not going to haul major stuff in the Treg.
- It is one of the best SUV's to drive. Hands down. (I've driven many)
- It's pricey to service at the dealer. No way around it. Oil, brakes, whatever... just a fact of life.
- REST is a great feature
- The cup holders are shallow. Skip the Big Gulp will ya? It's not the end of the world. It helped me cut down on coffee and kept my wife in fear every time she drove it with a drink.
- Love the mystery button on the steering wheel (yes, I know it's for heated models)
- Seat warmers can fry you on level 3 out of 5
- Phatnoise box was neat, cheap, and easy to install, but was buggy as it sometimes was recognized and sometimes not.
- I hit an average of 23mpg on one of my DC trips. Mostly it would be around 21 to 22 mpg on the highway once it was broken in.
- RTFM to figure out how to jump start it. A bit of adventure the first time for a VW newbie! (Kids would leave back lights on)

- The only one issue I really had was with some water that appeared to leak into the rear hatch when it rained. I think VW fixed the leak, but after that time, every time it rained, the Treg smelled, well, 'sour' is the best way I can describe it. Still does. I have to roll down the windows (even if it's raining) to air it out when I first get into the vehicle on a rainy day or after a heavy rain. No issue on dry days. VW service found no new leaks, so they couldn't help. My guess is that water sits in some area of the hatch/body, and it maybe is now moldy?

Anyways, the residual is around $22K and that's not worth buying for me. I also don't want to buy it because of the rainy day issue.

I've glanced at the Treg 2's, and it just appears to be almost the exact same vehicle, and I think it's time for something different. Since I'm looking at possibly hauling kayaks, I might try a passat wagon. Or a regular passat or CC. Could stay with VW, might leave.

In the end, the Treg is a worthwhile vehicle and it's a shame that first year reliability sank it (IMO) because I chose it over the last generation X5.

FYI - I also am looking at a Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Sequoia, and a few others for my next ride. SUV, wagon, or sedan.... Less than 60 days to decide!

FYI 2 - My silver roof rails will be for sale ('06s did not come with them) if I can get them off of the vehicle, along with the mud mats. I don't think I can sell the phatnoise box,

Still learning about my Touareg, but I have to comment regarding the cupholders.

I have spilled so many (full!) fast food drinks. I have learned to hold the drink nearly all of the time. It sucks to sit in ice cubes, and it is impossible to reach all of the places that the drink entered. Thankfully, I noticed that my rear monster mats held a lot of the liquid.

There HAS to be a "fix" for this. Any ideas?

Thank you for the review. I will look forward to many good years with mine.

The restyled cupholders on the 2007+ are deeper and have fixed this. They are available aftermarket for those who wish to swap them out.

Also, the 2007+ 3.6 V6 has more adequate power at a minimal loss of fuel economy.

2 years into my 2007 I've logged around 40k miles and am very happy with the vehicle and its reliability - only one warranty service to fix a broken horn.

Another related issue... At times on longer drives I would get a flash warning on some error with the 4wd system, and the knob that controls what system I'm in would flash as well. Never found an issue. Just kept driving. Message would tend to disappear.

I have 40K on the vehicle. Left that info out.

Well sounds like your lease is coming to end in perfect timing! Great review by the way also.

I drove a CC not long ago. Beautiful car and I loved the paddle shifters!!

There is a fix for the cupholders. Don't drink in the car or if you absolutely have to, then go with a small instead of the big gulp. The Touareg interior will thank you and so will your waistline. =) That and there is the "third" cupholder under the top portion of the center armrest which is deeper for those of you that "need" to have you 48oz drink every morning. My rule is no food or drink in the car, period. It also explains why my interiors are in such good shape.

Seriously though all the german cars I've owned have either not had a cupholder at all or have a sad excuse for one.

'84 BMW 318 - no cupholders
'86 VW Jetta - had two circular indents the size of a popcan on the inside of the glove box lid.
'93 VW Corrado - no cupholders
'96 VW Jetta - two pop-can holders about 2 inches deep.
'00 BMW M Roaster - two pop-can holders about 2 inches deep.

Germans make cars that are meant to be driven, they don't make picnic tables on wheels. Live with it or buy a Toyota Tundra which at last count had 13 cupholders even though it could only sit 5 people.

Shopping Update:

Audi's - Didn't see anything I liked that I felt was worth the $$$. Test drove nada. All were beautiful though. A5 interior is sweet. Used A4 too small. Used A6 pretty discounted, but I question how much maintenance will drain me at the dealer. (I have no mechanical aptitude, though I did do the air filter and cabin air filter in our 05 Sienna because the 30K checkup cost was such a ripoff).

BMW - Drove the latest edition X5 and a 525. Still don't like the X5 (salesman couldn't believe I had previously chosen a Treg over an X5) and the 525 was underpowered. Was told I probably wanted a 530 or higher. Gave up. BMW is overrated to me.

Infiniti - Drove a 2006 M35. Very nice. Beautiful Interior. Decent price. Also drove a leftover 2008 G35 Sedan. Very nice as well. Great power and handling. I like the Infiniti interiors very much. Dealer, not so much. They didn't give me any aggresive pricing that I would have preferred.

VW - Drove a 2006 Passat 4cyl. Basic model I believe. Felt very underpowered to me. Not impressed as I thought I would be. Interior very nice. Drove a 2009 Jetta S, bare bones manual. Very nice handling and the manual gave it a nice pop. Bare bones meant it was dirt cheap and comes with the guaranteed 3yr maintenance. This sounds like a very good deal. Tempted. Very tempted. Can't believe the heated seats are included, but I would like leather and satellite radio. Will be searching for a manual SE.

Still on my list:

Used Saab 9-3 or 9-5 (2005 - 2008)

Used Acura RL (2006 - 2008)

Thoughts? Opinions?

I'm thinking I should just keep waiting as the deals could be significantly better end of Jan or into Feb and Mar.

Agree with you on BMW....

On Infiniti, try an M45, big difference compared to the 35, at least for me. I can't stand Infiniti dealers...they're just trying to sell an expensive product. Reminds me of a jewelery store (sell by guilt)

On the Jetta, try a 2.0T version, the GLI is actually a good value...interior feels high end, its got 200HP and it still gets outstanding fuel mileage. Other than the off road gizmos, the GLI is available with just about everything available on the Treg, I'd also try the Passat CC....if you are looking for a powerful Passat drive the 3.6, you'll be impressed with the power and the luxury overall.

IMO Audi's need to be driven to understand the value proposition...an A4 might look blah, but the Quattro system and the feeling that its carved out of a solid piece of steel will sell you on it.

New C class is also an excellent effort from MB..

Hope this helps

NickM,

I agree on trying the Audi's. I probably should do so.

As to the M45. Agree again, and agree on the Infiniti dealer experience. Part of the problem is they don't have any local competition (have the same issue with the Acura dealer).

Will look at the two Jetta options mentioned. I have to say the CC looks very nice, but I wasn't a big fan of the seat pattern, including the fact that it looked like it shows the dirt very easily.

Thanks for the advice!

xc90 or xc70? either way nice choice...

I love those things...bulletproof and practical.

Oh man, I've had the car for four years and I never knew that was there!!! BRAVO:clapclap: What else? What else?
