I have poked around and read a ton of information and still can't figure this out. I understand the difference between soot and ash. Why does VCDS report oil ash volume in liters and max ash volume in grams? Here are some recent numbers from my 2014 Touareg. Is there another option I need to access that shows oil ash load currently? Or, is there another reading that shows ash load limit in liters, or do I need to convert liters to grams somehow. Appreciate anyone who can help me understand the different units of measurement for ash loads. Nothing wrong with the vehicle currently, just trying to understand health of DPF.

Address 01: Engine (7P0 907 401 K)
IDE00433 Particle filter: oil ash volume 0.18 l

IDE00434 Particle filter: soot mass calculated 21.92 g
IDE00435 Particle filter: soot mass measured 7.69 g

IDE06060 Particulate filter ash load limit 327.67 g

VCDS can only report what VW programmed, the same info the dealer sees. Too bad VW chose to obfuscate by mixing volume and weights for the newer UDS protocol. I would post an autoscan on the Forum at Ross-tech.com asking for help. Their Dr. Peter was able to explain to me where to find ash and soot readings as well as limit parameters for my undocumented (no label file) BWF V10.

oil ash is perhaps the calculated ash that ended up in the oil from blowby?

Soot is calculated/measured ash particles in the DPF?

Don’t think ash is in the oil. It is incinerated soot which falls to the bottom of the dpf, gradually filling it up. Dr. Peter said the V10 dpf ash must be less than 150 grams. I believe that’s when you go into limp mode.

Makes you wonder why it can't just be vacuumed out through an access point at each service?

Some folks slice open the bottom, clean and weld shut. Since total ash is calculated by some algorhythm involving total mileage, the ecu’s must be readapted. Not sure exactly how to do that.
