Dude, you sound like me when I had major issues with the rough riding my T1 was exhibiting on city streets. Like you, the test drives revealed no issues. But later found out the reason for that smooth ride was the manipulation of air pressure in the tires by the dealership (bought mine from Carmax). Once i got the reg back to the city, the bumpiness and noise rolling over something as small as a pebble could be felt and heard. Drove me nuts; I was ready to give the car back to the dealer until VW inspected the car for me and revealed that my tires were too rough for city driving. I have cupped tires, and they are more off-roading tires instead of all terrain. Makes my ride hell. But new tires should smooth the ride. However, VWs do run rough as I've come to learn from VW enthusiasts in my office. It won't be Lexus quality driving, but it will be less rough on the streets and less noisy once i change to new tires.

I agree that it's the VW dealership that has mostly left me in the lurch. I have taken everything including the spare out the back with no change. The noise is exclusively from the right rear. I put Hakka R's on for the winter & have checked the pressures in both multiple times and no change so don't think it's the tires. I also tried 2 different dealerships... I think I've done all I can. Just can't keep bringing the car back and getting more angry every time...

p.s. anyone interested in brand new (1200 miles) 20" Hakka R's?

I think it is how the vehicle is. I rode in a 2012 Routan yesterday (it's the courtesy vehicle that the dealership uses to shuttle customers between the subway (metro) and the dealership service center. The ride was rough over manhole covers. Smooth when not in potholes. I might bend to say the vehicle has bad shocks because it's a high-traffic vehicle, but I think that might be stretching it a bit. Tregs and Routan's are vastly different but I think the overall ride quality of most VWs is (like Ike and Tina said) "rough".

BTW, my buddy here in the office has an Audi Q7 (same body style as the T-reg) and his runs rough as well, but he admits that he likes that about Audi's and VWs.

We took our 2010 V6 diesel on it's first trip as a tug, towing the 2.5T Coromal Princeton and were mightily impressed with it's towing ability. Hills for the old V8 Explorer became flat stretches of highway for the Touareg, although 15l/100 over 400km wasn't too impressive. BUT! The RIDE! This is the very worst riding vehicle of any that I've owned over the last 60 years of driving. True, it has 20" wheels (pressure checked before and after trip and OK) but so did a couple of previous vehicles, but the ride is totally unforgiving. Every little ripple, corrugation, dip, or bump in the bitumen (and that's ALL that we travelled on) resulted in a terrible jarring ride. Surely this can't be typical of the brute, because if it is, it'll be advertised for sale very shortly. Bearing in mind that it permits a ball weight of 350kg, is the rear suspension stiffened to handle this? My wife and I both arrived back home with stiff shoulders and necks after being buffeted around, and I emphasise, we were on bitumen roads only. I strongly doubt that fitting even 17" wheels/tyres would greatly improve the ride, but I'd love to be proved wrong. Any info relating to this would be greatly appreciated as the car is otherwise a joy. Thanks.

What make and model of tires, what size and what pressures?

I know that 18” tires are much nicer of a ride than 19” on the same car and 21” R50 rims were as harsh as a track car compared to the 19”.

This is my personal experience...
I thought I was the only one on the planet that had that opinion! The low profile tires are a harsh, unforgiving ride.

Pass the plate and preach the gospel, for Blownvette speaks the truth that I see. >:) (just joking)

Well, it depends. I've got 275/45/19 tires on my 740 and it feels like I'm driving a mattress. Yes, come winter, I'm driving my own coffin.
I strongly recommend 18" rims if you have the steel springs. I've been in a T3 with 275/45/20 tires and the tank is just too damn heavy for that tire profile.
Mine are 265/50/19 and it's a huge difference.

I have hated the ride in my mates 2014 v6tdi steel sus riding on 18s everytime. Could feel every bump, imperfection on the road and the stereo was the worst ever.
I must say the tyre pressure hasnt been confirmed.he did say it was on the low side.

But travelling over the same roads in the 2015 v8 with air suspension is much better! And even better is the 2005 v10 with 18s. Swallows the bumps like anything, and riding in sport mode is fine too

check you havent broke a rear spring...i broke one and it rode pretty bad
