Update: The dealer called today to say that the valve body repair did not fix the problem. They are now waiting on Fidelity to come out and inspect again. What is next?? New tranny? Or will Fidelity come up with an excuse. I do all my own maintenance, oil, brakes, etc. Can they use this to get out of doing the repair? I am just preparing to fight back if they try to pull some kind of B.S.

Transmission requires no service and is filled for life. Hence, you should be OK. That said, the first question asked to me by a VOA cust service rep was, does the dealer change the oil. I had callled at VOA at dealer's request way back when on a stepper motor issue, clearly unrelated to oil changes. They so everything they can to get you to the dealer for all service and scare you about warranty issues.

Whose life? I just had my fluid replaced at 93k miles. Hopefully it will prove to be cheap preventive medicine over the long haul.

My last Benz had a sealed / no-service / filled-for-life transmission as well. It catastrophically self-destructed (and took the torque converter with it) at about 180k miles.

Cheers, John

I agree that the "life of transmission" fluid is not prudent, unless you expect short trans life and plan to have my 04 fluid changed at 50k miles, probably 30 would have been better.

But my point to Double Down was regarding his DIY maintenance(as I do). The warranty adjusters(read claims avoidance) and VOA always are sticklers on maintenance records and look for loopholes. Despite DD's non-dealer maintenance, he should be OK on the trans, because VW specifies no maintenance for the transmission, so he shouldn't have to show any documentation for the transmission.

I totally agree. Magnusson Moss Warranty Act is well within my vocabulary! :)

Cheers, John

UPDATE: Transmission replacement has been approved. I guess the extended warranty will more than pay for itself several times over. Sad that the tranny didn't even last 60k miles.
Nice to hear, I had the exact same issues as you did with your Touareg. ...First the valve body replacement (didn't work), then new tranny. All covered without question from VW's factory powertrain warranty. I didn't purchase an extended warranty, but I do rest assured that the major items have been replaced (two turbos, tranny)... At th e replacement time, I only had about 42k KM's on the vehicle. I'm now at 89k KM's on my 2004.

Checked in on the progress today, should be back together by tomorrow. I am getting the serpentine belt replaced since it is very easy access at this point, $65 no labor. They tried to talk me into the timing belt and water pump, but it only has 58k miles. Cost of parts $995, not worth it at this point. I plan on selling or trading it in before it gets to 80k anyway. All I can say is Fidelity is paying out the azz for this. Valve body plus tranny replacement=cha-ching! Check out the pics:

Question for those that have had their valve bodies replaced. What were your out of pocket expenses?
My vehicle is currently at the dealership and VW has approved the valve body replacement. The dealership has asked me to approve $906 worth of "maintenance" to cover the cost of replacement ATF fluid, screen, etc. Now the $906 also includes the cost of a new transmission oil pan that is dented. Has VW covered others aside from the dented tranmission pan?

I am assuming that the valve body replacement is not related to the dented tranny pan but what maintenance? If the valve body replacement was warranty approved, then that warranty service should include the same parts and labor as if you walked in off the street and paid out of pocket for a valve body replacement. They shouldn't be concerned with who is paying. It is your warranty that you purchased that is paying VW on your behalf, not VW's warranty!! sounds like someone at the dealer is trying to cover a reservation at Ruth Chris

IMO,
dented pan? on you
filter? probably on you
fluids? them
gasket? them

I would tend to agree with you Chuck.

I believe transmission oil pan and valve body would be completely unrelated. In fact, i'd go so far as to say that the dented oil pan probably doesn't need replacing either but it's best if it is.

Thank you for your reply.

I just had my valve body replaced.
$1078 for the valve body from emich VW incl new bolts.
Bought 9 quarts of amsoil atf.
$200 paid for install, incl gasket and he changed motor oil as wel (I provided oil +filter)

You already have transmission problems with your Touareg? I haven't talked to you since you got it... Hope Fifth Avenue Auto Haus is taking care of you... They always gave me top-notch service, and don't BS around... However, waiting for parts to arrive was always a pita. When my V10 was still covered under warranty, they would rent me a car from Enterprise for free for the duration until I got my V10 back.

Best of luck,
Jason

Yes already problems with my Touareg.
Fifth Ave has been pretty good. I had a number of trim items I've asked them to look into and they've all come back with various reasons why they are not covered.
I just picked up my Touareg last night after paying for the transmission oil pan, a magnet that apparently same loose (as a result of the damage), a couple of related odds 'n' ends, and the labour to replace the pan. The labour to replace the pan seems a little off as they would have to remove and replace the pan anyway...
But here's the rub, after picking up my Touareg my second pass through the gears and the problem is still there!
I would say it might actually be worse as the "double shift" or "slippage" from 4th to 5th occurred every time I accelerated at a constant ~2000 RPM from a stop. However, this time the initial shift would hold longer, RPM would periodically increase (by ~100 RPM) and then the second shift would occur dropping the RPM by ~1000. I'm not sure what they'll do now about my transmission oil pan charges as I think it’s unfortunately going to be transmission change time.

So strange they would charge you labour to remove the oilpan.... I'd bring it up with them... Fifth Ave ordered and replaced my transmission with a brand new one, after they tried changing the valve body, to no fix (hard down shifts)... They showed me the invoice that they will bill to VWOA for the replacement transmission (no cost to me, as under warranty)... Transmission was just shy over $10k, and with labour (removing/re-installing engine), the total cost came close to $16k... I was floored. Unless their tightening their purse strings, you shouldn't have to pay for anything mechanical related. I didn't pay a single cent to them for any of my mechanical warranty work...

As for cosmetic stuff, I do have some peeling near the driver-side door handle, the grey vinyl started to peel, but thankfully, the plastic underneath is almost the same colour. All my buttons are perfect, but I realize things like that will eventually wear out / peel because you need to actually touch them to work them.

Best of luck, let us know of any updates.
