GPS aerial - I connected it through the top speaker and stuck it near that small panel (25mm x 100mm) in front of the speaker mesh (I do not know what it is but it is connected with wiring and saw no sense playing with it). I feel that the aerial would actually go inside the speaker mesh out of sight, but I want the reception to be as good as, so I am leaving it where it is. In summary, the unit has been worth the price. Certainly is a nice fit and looks OEM. I know there are other sellers of similar units. I gave this seller of this unit a wrap as the unit is as described and is a straight forward fit in the existing DIN bay.

OILSLURPER, first off, congrats on the new toy! Second of all, I want to thank you for sharing all this, even the ebay link, as I believe that this is BIG! So much so, that it makes my other thread where I'm asking with which Iphone/iPod adapter to use on my 2005 DVD based Navigation, literally obsolete. At first, when you first introduced us to this HU, I thought that it was too goo to be true, but reading on here your report, FINALLY some of us have hope! I've been wanting for the longest time to say "good riddance" to my OEM system. The fact is, that I've always loved its look and especially its night illumination and aesthetics. Ya, I'm a sucker ambience and lighting.

Which brings me to this, and I do apologize to be a pest, but is there any way you can snap a couple of pics of this toy of yours at night? I'd like to see how well the surrounding buttons on the HU match up to the factory red. If this passes, I'm going to bite the bullet and buy one. It's high time for some of us to move forward in this technology game. OEM look(pending your night pictures), OEM fit(based on your day time pictures), OEM functionality(minus the MFI artist/song display capability according to your report), and best of all, by a significant margin, NON OEM pricing!

The unit I have has the red illumination as you would expect the OEM version (there is a blue light version but not from this seller) - I'll take a pic later and post it. I need to let all readers of this forum realise that there are other sellers of units similar; they may not be identical. I have gone to this length to provide info as this unit slides in without much fuss. If you were not a Treg owner, you would not know it was non-OEM. My advice is to follow this thread from the start to get the positive experience I've had from purchase to install. I am recommending an eBay seller for this unit, not other units sold elsewhere. If I had not been on this forum, I would not have read the hassles with the OEM version. IMO, they're now overpriced as a used model and outdated. I made up my mind to go after market after my reading about bluetooth and Ipod hassles, plus mapping CD's etc- I have no regrets!

My costs for this unit:
$676, including DHL 3-day courier from Hong Hong.
$34 for the twin Fakra connector.
$50 to my electronics tech mate to help with the install
I suggest you also get the VW removal keys (x4) from the seller to remove your old unit. Worth the $6 odd!

GPS aerial installation notes. Remove the folding top console with 2 x hex screw. Get a small blade to lift the top speaker mesh up. You have access to route the aerial lead and detector. Pics of where I located mine attached.

Thanks a lot oilslurper for sharing this with us. This looks really, really good. I totally agree with you that OEM is way over prized for what you get. Sorry if my post gave you the wrong vibes, was not intented. It's just hard to figure out if a seller on the net is trustworthy or not. Will shake the money tree a bit and order one next week. Not even gonna try to fix the old one. Add up any repair prices and the price of a nice wired hansfree kit and your already half there.

PS did you notice your steeringwheel is on the wrong site?

Steering wheel is on the wrong side, yes. But I drive on the RIGHT side if the left side makes any sense! Happy to provide info, I put my money where my mouth is and so far, very happy with the result. eBay is a matter of experience and I am a long term user with many good expereiences; again, happy to share this seller as trusted.

For those who don't want antenna visible, just locate it underneath the speaker grill, GPS antenna specs do allow for some penetration of solids, I don't know exactly what that is, but it is military and the only time it might not work is when refraction is in play like in a wet rainforest or a solid blob of concrete. The OEM installation has the antenna under the front wing (guard), so I would imagine plastic is doesn't significantly degrade the signal.

Cheers

For all the information and pics^^^^Thank you thank you thank you and THANK YOU!

PS
It just occurred to me that this is the the Australia and New Zealand, Club Touareg region directory part of the forum!
Wow! I don't know how I ended up here, but I' supposing that if it wasn't for my bravery to cross borders and read new up on new stuff on this forum elsewhere, I would never have found this thread of yours!

This thread right here http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f45/treg-ebay-navi-units-35087-4.html seems to be on a parallel course with yours OILSLURPER. Thought I'd add it here so maybe people(including myself ;)) can get all info needed in one shot. Post #40 in that link I just provided is interesting as sources to buy this HU from in a nutshell. We are assuming that it is the same model? OILSLURPER, any comments in case there is something in between the lines to be aware of? There seems to be a $200 spread based on post#40, which is quite a price difference, but I'm slightly suspicious of the cheapest offering.

Boygirlca seems to have bought from the same ebay seller as you. Maybe someone for you to compare notes with to discover new features, etc.

Hi OILSLURPER. Can you confirm if the unit plays music and has bluetooth connectivity with an IPhone 3GS. I was told by the ebay seller that it works with Iphone 3G but not 3GS. I found this hard to believe, but am not sure if they were talking about music or the bluetooth.

Thanks

I can't comment on the IPhone. Both Nokia's I have connected simply and first time.

I can only state my positive experience on the HU from the seller I identified. A trusted seller; hence my referral. I know others sellers may sell the same HU. The important issue for me on eBay is the seller.

Does the MFD display the Nav directions? I kind of liked that on the OEM unit, as I could see it without looked away from the road.

I was also wondering what controls or displays are lost by putting in a aftermarket NAV/stereo. I am used to driving without controls on the wheel so I would not miss it. However Kenwood might have an adapter to allow these to work. I have not looked in to it too far. I do have the Kenwood DNX8120 model and love it in my Jetta GLI and am thinking of taking it out and putting in in the Touareg

There is no loss of of audio control functions on the steering wheel on my model. The top of the MFD disappeared (audio stuff), but I'm not worried about that as the same info is on the screen on the head unit LCD, just bigger.

I have a 2004 and non of the steering wheel controls work, nor will they ever, 2005 has the same problem. Having said that, I don't miss them and the Kenwoods are VERY good.

Steering wheel controls, 2006-current are all OK with the unit I installed.
