Anyone here ever take a ride from Vegas to Utah? I am trying to combine a work and pleasure trip together (work = Utah, Pleasure = Vegas) in two weeks. I am planning on flying straight to vegas then driving to Utah. My reason for the drive is that I thougth it would be a pretty drive with some great scenery, but I really have no idea other than what the google aerial shots show me. Does anyone here have any thoughts? Suggestions?

Is it a waste of a drive or is it worthwhile?

It is fine the first time you do it, but becomes long and boring after doing it multiple times. I have driven SLC to LV quite a few times and if I don't have to take anything with me I prefer to fly down and rent a car. Hour flight versus 6 hour drive is so much better. Where in UT do you want to go?

I am going to Salt Lake City for work - Vegas for a bachelor party. I was wondering what the drive is like and if it's scenic enough to bother with. I am not really doing this cuz i need a car, again it's rather to go for a nice rewarding drive.

If you like the desert, go for it. Every hear of the salt flats? That's what you'll see. The great scenery is south to St. George.

I drove from SLC to Bonneville and back while I was out there. I went out to Bonneville just to look and say I've been. Being from the east coast it was an amazing sight just because we don't have mountains that size or that amount of open flat area.

But now that I've done it I wouldn't want to drive it on any kind of regular basis.

SLC to the Salt Flats is nothing compared to the SLC to LV drive. Not sure why Mike is saying the drive to LV is Salt Flat like, no salt flats down that way at all. If you have never seen terrain like that before, it will be interesting the first time you do it. It will be at least a 6 hour drive and once you get past St George there is a brief moment in Arizona where you drive through a canyon. After that canyon section of AZ, the drive from AZ/NV line is just plain boring and desolate. You see a brief oasis when you pass by Mesquite, but after Mesquite it is more desolation until you get to LV.

I missed on that one. I was thinking of the I-80 trip to California. Nothing to Reno.

Salt Lake to Reno

Why does one drive a Touraeg from SLC to Reno on Highway 80?? There is a magnificent trip waiting for any who want the drive of a lifetime between these two points. Several years ago my wife and I followed the old Lincoln highway, the overland stage trail and the pony express trail from the Utah state line to the California state line. It only took 2 days. Navigation was with GPS and the "Nevada Atlas & Gazetteer" published by DeLorme. It's probably too early to get across the Ruby Mountains any time before the end of May but there are detours around the worst (best?) parts available.

There are miles of 70 or 80 mph gravel roads out there with fantastic scenery, and great history thrown in. I consulted this websit often planning some of the trip Nevada Stations

To me there's nothing better than wandering in the American West. But then I'd have serious problems visiting Vegas, so everything is ok (in moderation, of course).:D

I have to agree with that...probably the most beautiful place in the world (at least to my eyes it is.

That's the way to see the country! Bow Down

If you are not in a hurry you can take the I15 to the Hurricane turn off, That will be SR 9, go to La Verkin (I lived in La Verkin a few years) and up to Zions national park. You drive through the park take a hike or 2. At the east side of Zions drive north on US 89. Stop and see Big Rock Candy Mountain, and a lot of great mountain country side. US 89 will follow the I70 at Vermillion to salina where you will turn off the I70 following US 89, head up to gunnison and take SR28 till you hit the I15 again at Nephi, From there You Take the I15 to SLC, A long drive but worth it.

I grew up in SLC and have lived in Palm Springs CA for the past 25 Years. I would take my kids on diffrent road trips from here to SLC the many time we went to see Grandma and Grandpa.
