My Lexusa is gettin old need a new car. How dependable are the Vr6's and do ya think this is a good dea

The VR6 is a very good, low maintenance motor that has been around a long time. It has no timing belt (chain driven) and outside of changing my fluids (oil, rad fluid, power steering, and brake fluid), spark plugs, and air filter, I have not had one repair in 100k miles on the motor itself. Zero emission issues, zero check engine lights.

This motor is a 3.6 liter displacement that was first introduced in 2005 and continues to be used today in the Touareg, Atlas, and Passat.

The 3.6 isn't a fast motor compared to what is out there, but if winning drag races isn't a worry then it is worth considering.

No idea on price. The Touareg was cut for the USA starting with the 2018 model. Also this engine is the only one available now (because of DieselGate) and soon there will be no more new Touaregs in the US period. Get it while you can.

Oh, and yes this motor really can tow at the 7,716 max, if you need to haul a boat or trailer. Soon VW won't sell a real towing vehicle in the US. :(

Thanks for the reply Any repairs otherwise in 100k? I would think reliability otherwise tdi or vr6 would be the same. Do you know what difference they made to the motor so it does not require Premium fuel in 2016? Premium used to be 20 cents difference in my area now it is 70 cents difference.

Other than the motor has been center main bearing, dash fan blower motor, transmission valve chest. The valve chest being the only real expensive repair, and on a older generation transmission (2013 is an eight speed unit).

TDI are very good motors, but I am going to say much more maintenance with what all I read on here (seems there are two threads for every one gasser). Couple this with an unknown fix down the road due to dieselgate and I would personally be very cautious of a TDI right at this moment.

My own opinion only.

Thanks very nice input. I have a TDI already and understand your points plus fuel filters, turbos HPFP adblue system problems I don't need two TDI's.. It seems a x5 I get much less car for 25,500 but the motor is a bit better? and this is right down the road. Do you always run premium? Thanks

Always run premium. My mileage also can't be compared as older Treg weighs more and has two speeds less.

Going from the Treg TDI to the 3.6 will likely not be something you will like from a drivability basis as the 3.6 just isn't a motor with the low end torque that you are used to. That said it can be appreciated as I love mine, but have the 4.2 V8 FSI for our full time tow vehicle as that does have low end torque.

The most positive thing I can say about the 3.6 is it is a dead reliable VR6 and I found out I love the VR6 sound and feel.

I bought my 2013 Treg Lux VR6 a couple years ago (CPO) with 21k miles for $32k. That is a fairly good price but I'm sure there is some room for negotiation IMO.

As previously stated, the VR6 is a solid engine. While its not a power house for speed, the flat torque curve for the VR6 certainly helps it move along when needed combined with the 8sp transmission. Peak torque is at a very low 2300'ish RPM's, which is great for a NA gas engine. Check out the APR graph below.

The only issue I had was with the alternator and battery monitoring module which took the dealer far too long to properly diagnose. I now know more about the Touaregs complex AGM based charging system than most mechanics...LOL. Outside of that, it was been trouble free for the 20k miles I've put on it in just under 2 years - I would buy it again in a heart beat.

While the Lux has quite a few options, I wish I had the Dynaudio option which is included with the Executive. Hope to cure this issue with an amp and small powered sub soon.

I just bought a 2014 CPO V6 Exec with 14k miles for 34k+ttl. There were a couple of similarly priced vehicles within a couple of hours of me. Search far to find prices to negotiate locally. I think that one should come cheaper.

I have a 2016 Touareg and 2011 X5. I have to say the X5 is a much better vehicle. It handles way better and the motor is a fair bit faster than the Touareg.

The only aspect is the Touareg has better brake hardware, but it doesn't make much difference for street driving.

It was definitely a good deal and I am the happy owner of this vehicle. I didn't see your posting until after I bought it.
I have to say, it is basically a brand new 2013. The previous owner never drove it in Wisconsin winters from what I would told and what I can see for myself. It was driven to Florida every year for the season and stored in a heated garage when not in use. When I saw it I couldn't believe it's condition and had to get it.

The pictures from the dealer's ad do not do it justice. A very rare find for any used vehicle. For less than 1/2 of the new cost, it was a no brainer for me. Was also looking at the Audi Q5 and Q3, but this turned out to be an excellent value. Looking forward to many good years with this Touareg. Too bad they are not bringing them to the US after this year.

VWcheats, Good luck in your search for a vehicle.

I recently sold my 2011 Touareg Tdi Lux back to VW, and have replaced it with a 2014 Touareg Exec, with CPO, for 29 K plus tax/license. Had 42K miles, but is in great condition. As everyone says, the engine performance is not up to the Tdi, but hope to have good luck with it for a few years. Only problem I can find is the memory seat function does not work. Will take it in to the local dealer to fix that; the dealer that sold me the vehicle is too far away for a return trip. The extra features on the Exec are nice.

Glad ya picked up the Exec neighbor. I called and was told the guy traded 2 vehicle in at same time as Treg. I hemmed and hawed about driving down to look at it but I wanted a different vehicle in the garage besides my 014. I drove a 4 Runner all week in the Sierra Nevada and pounded the snot out of that thing. Its a step down from the Treg but has the low speed case. Might consider one of those now that I am back. Funny in Calif the premium fuel is no more than 20 cents difference than regular like it used to be in Wisco.. Go figure why its that much cheaper in CAlly?

I forgot what it feels like to have a full frame under yur belt with the 4 Runner when U R on old fire trails and climbs to hidden lakes and canyons all washed out rough and ready. The Owens Valley is full of mining trails, volcanic craters washes and it is so wide open with the high desert the views are endless. Glad also I got the extra insurance.

The salesman said that he traded a Mustang and the Treg for another Mustang. I went to look at the Treg about a week after they got it. My wife wasn't ready to purchase a vehicle just yet, but after I showed it to her we bought it 3 days later. she agreed, we will never find another used vehicle like this in perfect condition. Rides like it's on rails. Just over 2 weeks in the Treg and no regrets.

I agree there is no comparison between a Touareg and a Q5
I still really like the looks of the Q5. Never actually drove one, but most of the Q5's for sale didn't have a tow package and I would rather have something set up from the factory with towing.
One thing that surprised me is a brand new 2017 Touareg is the same price as a new Audi SQ5. Seems like a SQ5 has more options, bigger wheels and a better engine for the same money. Anybody have thoughts on that?

I had a similar situation, with added goal of towing my Airstream. I am totally happy with my Touareg VR6 sport model. It is reliable thus far, more fun to drive than the Lexus RX, gets reasonable gas mileage, and tows my travel trailer easily. Also, my wife is "vertically challenged" and finds the Touareg easier to get in and out of than the Highlander and Pilot. I alternate 87 and 91 octane at Costco trying to hit an average of 89, but the car runs well with either.

The Q5 is on an A5 car platform I believe. I drove a Q5 TDI with the 3.0 it shook at idle, platform was not substantial enough for the motor. I was driven in a courtesy car Q5 base model I was not impressed at all. Its a big seller though so what do I know but would not want one myself. I would take a Lexus RX as my chick SUV versus the Q5
