All,

I'm a loyal Exxon Mobil guy (FIL worked for Mobil for 30+ years) but there is not much Exxon Diesel in North Dallas so I'm having to buy from other companies. I have the choice of Shell, Chevron, and Texaco for major brands and Kroger, Race track, Valero and Diamond Shamrock smaller brands . Shell seems to be the cheaper most of the time. Just wondering what others are running in their TDI's and have they had any issues with Diesel from a particular brand?

Thanks.

I have a Chevron a couple of miles from my house with a diesel pump. I have only filled up once since I have had my TDI, but I have not really gone anywhere with it other then back and forth to work.

It doesn't appear to be one of your local choices, but I use Hess for ULSD. They're one of the few chains that consistently offers diesel locally. As a result, there's usually a good amount of traffic through them. Hopefully, that assures me of fairly fresh, quality fuel.

(In Canada)...

I've always used Chevron 94 octane for gas and Shell for diesel. When I can't find a Shell, I go to Mohawk.

I was speaking to a guy I met from Chevron head office (Vancouver location) and he was telling me that for gas, Chevron was the best (biased?) but for diesel, Shell was on top. Interesting, coming from a loyal Chevron employee.

I didn't even know there was Chevron in Canada. I've never seen Chevron around our parts before(Quebec and Ontario).

I seem to have had most success with Shell on the diesel end. I use Super 94 Octane at Petro Canada for the BMW when I'm feeling all gutsy, but in general, I use Esso for both diesel and 91 Octane gasoline, since I get an Esso discount with the company card

Esso is Exxon. That PDF from Chevron is full of information I wish the other companies had something like that to read. I also doubt that there is much difference between Texaco and Chevron since the Texaco website pointed me to Chevron's diesel information.

I use sunoco "gold" diesel...its slightly more expensive than sunoco's redular diesel (2 cents/L).

There are LOTS of Chevron stations around greater Vancouver.
Having said that, pretty much everyone who has a fast/performance vehicle fills up with Chevron 94. I only went to Petro Canada once when I ran out of fuel and rolled into the pump lane in neutral as my car stalled. LOL.

Is the Chevron 94 "better" than the Petro Canada 94? Curious..

Forgot to mention 4 posts up, that there is a Shell station(the only one I know of :-k come to think of it) that carries two types of diesel. I forget their terminology for the more expensive one. I rarely go to it since its too far, so I just add a bottle of the "grey" bottle PowerService that contains Cetane boost into my "chipped" TDI.

Take a look at that chevron PDF that I posted on this link the PowerService Might be a waste of money.

I think I'm going to buy Chevron since it's the closest to me. But I don't think there is probably much difference between Chevron and Texaco since they are like Exxon/Mobil. Then mix in a few tanks of Shell when its cheaper and makes the drive worth to the station worth it.

I suggest everyone that drives a TDI or thinking about getting one read parts of this Chevron Doc:

Diesel Fuels Technical Review
http://www.chevron.com/products/ourfuels/prodserv/fuels/documents/Diesel_Fuel_Tech_Review.pdf

I wish I could find similar information from Shell, Exxon and major producers. If you find something like this please post it.

Interesting doc, with quite a few discussions about lubricity. Noticed that ester was one of the three basic lubricity additives mentioned. I guess that helps explain why biodiesel blends made from SME (soy-methyl ester) are considered one of the best choices for lubricity.

I agree I got the most out discussions on lubricity. I also liked learning more about Cetane. I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding on what Cetane does and what it means for your Diesel engine.

I read that Chevron PDF, very interesting stuff!

Unfortunately, Chevron is not available here so...

Powerservice might be a waste, but Stanadyne is endorsed by VW for the PD engines(like the V10) anyways. I've actually had better results in super cold temps with the P.S white bottle FYI.

There used to be a couple of VW TSB 's on the Stanadyne. I have the official TSB PDF file one on my other computer from 4 years ago, but that is at my brothers now. Here's one anyways but not the full copy

And here is a link that I found in the Q&A on the VW.CA website on recommended gas stations that meet additive standards! No surprise to see Chevron and Shell on that list.
