Hi Vince

It depends on what usage you want the tyres for. If you plan on taking the car off road, all my research leans slightly in favour of Coopers. Both for on/off road ability and longevity

Hey,

I will replace the original Dunlop Grantrek 8000 on my 04 Touareg now with 40k driven. Bought the car in Feb09 with 28000, never checked the Tyre pressure (and never rotated front to back) cause I thought I have this great TPMS. Still not sure if I do have that system, but while the tyres were still pretty good when I bought the car, I stuffed the front ones up on the outside because after first time checking I noticed I was driving on 170kpa everyday from Gold Coast to Brisbane...stupid ha?

I will take Scorpion STR in 255/60/R17, while no experince I hope they will do the job on the street and hopefully next month on Fraser Island, will report how they will perform in the sand. Was considering ATRs but then I thought if I want to go for a real outback trip I probably will buy a 2nd set of wheels.

go with pirelli's ...great all up...

Funny you say that Singh - I was warned off Pirelli (P-Zeros specifically but Pirelli tyres generally) as I was told they don't last long at all.

(I've got Eagle LS2s btw after having Dueller HTs)

Unlike the zeros Pirelli ATR last a looong time....great on and off road. only downside is the tread pattern doesnt give a wide appearance

I went for Pirelli ATR 265/65r17 and very happy. Time will tell on longevity.........

Yeah, speedo is spot on

STRs

Hello Tim,

how are the STRs doing off-raod?
At what price did you get them?

Thanks
Sascha

Never go down the Goodyear F1 route 255 60 r17 (factory fitted), mine done 16k and tread not looking flash. Left hand side a lot more worn than the right, however they are uni-directional can't do a diagonal rotation Grrrr

Hey Sascha,

just came back from Fraser Island, they were all right for sand but by far not great. You can't get out of the ruds, steering control = 0. When deflating, the side does not really form a dense. People with thin muddies seemed to do better on sand.

Price was 350 incl. installation at Bob Jane.

On the road they are great, very silent.

Seems like Perilli only make STR (not ATR) in 265/60/18. Anyone have experience with Yokahama Geolander? Also, will circumference variation of around 22mm from standard be within legal limits/warranty? This wheel/tyre issue is so much bigger than one thinks; no wonder so many posts on the forum on this issue. Appreciate any feedback. Werner

Hello Werner.

I think I read somewhere that the max +15mm restriction is only in QLD and NSW, but not in WA and NT. Read it somewhere in the Forums. For QLD it is easy to find on the QLD Transportation page under vehicle modifications, maybe WA has something similar?

Murray, 65 corrects speedo to spot on and lifts you slightly

I've been happy with the Pirellis (15K). If all 5 need to be replaced, I'd probably look at a slightly larger size next time. I have ATs, but I think it'll be ATR in the future

replacement OEM tyres

The orginal Good Years on my 07V6TDI barely managed 32K KM.
I found the only exact replacment for size were high speed highway treads. You should check out the web for tyre size calculators to ensure the dia and circumference are allowable. Also the OEM have a "V" speed rating which is good for 240 km/hr. I chose a Cooper AT tyre with a "S" speed rating and sizing within 1.6%.
My decision was made for around 25% off road and the Coopers seem 'so far so good'. Jury is still out regarding life expectancy.
