I recently purchased a used 2005 V8 (60K miles) and thought that the oil level was overfilled. Took the car to the dealership showed the service manager the manual and the dip stick and he said it was fine. The oil level was at the top of the "top" orange plastic part of the dipstick (1/4 to 1/2 inch above max). The service records show that 9.75 quarts were used during the oil change at (56,982 miles) when they took the car as a trade in. The car had then been driven for approximately 3200 miles with this overfill by the dealership. They changed the oil again for me when I purchased it and this time only added 9 quarts. The level still seemed high to me. Got fed up and finally found out for myself that the engine takes 8 quarts! After reading all the warnings in the manual I'm a bit concerned.

What if any damage could have been done by a 1 to 1.75 quart overfill? How would I know or check? Should I be concerned?

It runs fine and I don't have any warning lights. Seems to be some black soot inside openings of the exhaust but I haven't noticed any smoke in the exhaust.

Thanks.

I can't give you a definitive answer regarding 'potential for damage by over-filling engine oil' on a Treg, however I do know that many car rental companies do overfill their engine sumps with oil. Apparently done in order to minimise the risk of engine damage from low oil levels. I am inclined to believe that low oil levels are more likely to cause damage rather than an overfill (if only by a pint or two.)

very high level will mean higher engine temps and the oil will not last long (as the crank slaps the oil..), so get it changed. you may check a plug for any signs of oil being burnt that passed the rings. however so long as you have no oxy sensor cat convertor failures/warnings etc then you are probably just fine...

I could be wrong, but believe that if there is too much oil, and you push the engine to hard, you might blow a seal as the pressure gets too high.

I check my oil in all cars once per month. I prefer to have the oil level at the middle of the indicator. Just my $0.02.

^ you are indeed correct sir...

When i needed an excuse to blow my V6 in my camaro up to put a V8 in i just added a 2 quarts extra oil in and voila, blew some valve seals, pushed some piston rings and started to burn more oil then a 200k mile ford.....But that was a Chevy...

Anyways, in your case i think you should be fine. If nothing happened (no smoke) or the oh so intelligent computer picked up anything abnormal after 3200 miles then you're definitely fine. I'd just do an oil change with the correct amount.

This happened to me 3 out of the 4 times VW serviced my V8. I ask them every time to chech the levels and they still mess up.

I am tired of dealing with these folks. On average they overfill by one quart. My fix is a cheap manual vac pump with a 6 mm hose down the dipstick pipe.

An earlier post suggested that the oil drain process on the V8 require a second plug to be removed to drain the last liter of oil. Our friends at VW dont always follow instructions and as a result you end up with one liter of overfill.

Get a shop to suck out the excess oil. Too much is much worse than too little.

And you have a liter of used oil left in the treg. That is when you go back, demand a new oil change (with filter) insist on being there when they do it and ask for your money back to make up for extra time spent at the dealership.

Too much oil will cause the oil to foam. Oil has detergents in it to clean, the foam does not have the lubication protection your motor needs. Having the crank running submerged causes power loss and loss of fuel mileage. This is part of the reason race motors run dry sump systems. Get the levels right.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to take it back to the dealership and have them get it right.
I just want to confirm that the oil level should not be in or above the upper orange plastic bit on the dipstick when it is filled with the proper amount. This is what the manual states. Is this what you are all seeing when (engine is cold) filled with the correct amount (8 quarts)? I've got no baseline to compare to as I haven't changed it myself. Thanks in advance.

This is what the dealership is insisting but I have a 2005 V8 (AXQ). Is 8 quarts not correct? This is what I'm trying to get right.

From the fluid capacity charts on this forum:

Touareg
2005
w/filter change
BAA
6.3L (6.7 qt)
AXQ
7.6L (8.0 qt)
BKW
(TDI – PD)
11.5L (12.0 qt)

On my 2004 AXQ 4.2 V-8, if the warm/hot oil is allowed to completely drain (both drain plugs removed) for a period of 5 to 10 minutes, between 8 and 8 1/2 quarts of oil is needed for a correct refill with filter replacement. I let the shop add 8 quarts, and then dribble in enough to bring it up to ~3/4 full on the dip stick when warm. Don't measure and add when the engine is cold; you will have it over filled when heat expansion of the oil occurs.

Cool. Thanks!
