All,

I called my dealer yesterday and asked them how many $'s it would cost me to have them replace the tail light bulb (brake light) on my Veewee, they told me that it would be 110.00 $, I told them that there was a TSB out on this light assembly and that if the white plastic retaining clip were to be replaced per the TSB then I could replace the light bulbs at will or when they blow out... Ahh Sorry sir but there is no TSB for your Vee Wee, if you want the bulb replaced then its 90$'s and hour plus tax and bulb.

I went home and took a look at the light assy and found out how to remove the assy without breaking it.

This is how

I'm working on the passenger lens

Grab a 1 beer
a torx bit screw driver or a small flat screw driver
a thin sturdy piece of plastic (I used a bike tire pry bar, I use them to replace my clincher tires on my road bike tires) or a very small flat screw driver.
one osram bulb from your dealer, these bulbs look like 1157 bulbs but the mounting tongs are off set a bit.

First take the small flat screw driver an pop off the plastic caps that cover the two bolts, these two caps are located to the left of the lens, the rear door needs to be open, once off you'll see two screws, use the torx bit driver or a flat screw drover to remove them.

Now the hard part, by the way I sat looking at the darn thing for a half hour, looking behind it around it pulling on it gently, to no avail it still would not come out, what ever you do don't force it. The stud and the white plastic mount are located on the right bottom corner, this would be nearest the rear right tire.

Anyhow, this is how I removed the lens.

Tip the top of the lens out towards you and take your small plastic pry bar or small screw driver and slip it behind the lens between the PAINT and the lens position it as low as you can on the right bottom corner of the lens, don't force the prying tool or you'll screw up the paint, now pry gently the pry tool so that the tip of the tool (the tip should be 2 cm inside the space so as not to mess the paint) touches the paint and the edge of the tool touches the edge of the lens, now grab the lens with you right hand and pull the lens toward you and pry gently teh lens gently towards you with your left hand, barely no pulling force is needed and pop it goes!

Once you have it off the then remove the bulbs from the back of the assembly!

Dont forget to grease (lithium grease) the silly mounts or take it to the dealer and tell them to fix the damn thing! The grease allows you to pull them off even if you have the white mounts.

Now the my rear lights come off without a problem!

Depiry,

My goal was to let folks know how to do it without special tools. like blue point or snapon tools. The removal of a brake light should never require special tools that can are only readily available for machanics.

Mine brake light has just gone this evening, I was wondering how to do it and the dealer said its possible the lense may crack and this wont be our fault, I just left the dealer, its not my normal dealership, which I will head over to tomorrow.

Both my rear brake lights just went out on my way home from work. I've had a number of vehicles over the past 20 years and never had this happen before. I am glad to have found this post. I stopped and got two replacement bulbs already, do not know the brand. I am going to give it a try and hope this doesn't turn into one of those "shoulda' gone to the dealer" moments. Thanks for the info!

I just had to replace the turn signal bulb in my '07 and of course broke the little white plastic mount (grommet?) anyone know the part number for this thing. Since I don't have any idea what the factory calls this thing I can't find it on any of the parts sites I search

Stolen from the above thread. Pictures!

And here iPhone pictures of the speed nuts I just picked up from the stealership:

Yes, although I wouldn't exactly call it a speed nut since it has no threads. it is the white socket the silver post on the back of the tail light pushes into. The white socket sits in a hole in a bracket that is part of the body work

I need to get a new one since I broke the one there when I pulled the tail light housing out to change the bulb so I need to know what it is called or some kind of part number so I can order one

thanks for your quick reply

I once had to buy a hubcap (remember those covers for the steel wheels)

Parts dept and myself both could not find it.

It was listed as "wheel hub assembly."

The replacement plastic sockets are black and should be installed in place of the white one. Even replace the white one that was not broke. There was a tsb out that the white ones are to be discarded.

Thanks for the help part is ordered!
Next thing I have to tackle is replacing the gas struts that hold up the rear hatch. Went to the car show in LA after thanksgiving and noticed they moved the struts to the outside on the new Touaregs much easier to access. It looks like I have to disassemble the entire interior to replace the struts on the '07

There is a good how to thread on here.

Search for the key word luber. This is a critical piece of equipment you need and is unique to the rear hatch strut replacement how to.

And that is exactly why it is a SPEED nut - no spanner required!
