I too have the rumble in my 2006 V10, which I have owned for just a week. The rumble is definately not related to engine mountings etc it is gearbox related. The brake pedal acts like an on/off switch for the rumble. To me it sounds very much like a worn clutch release bearing on a manual gearbox, and since it happens as soon as the car comes to a standstill with the car in gear, I would say that is pretty much what it is, basically a release bearing that is used to disconnect the drive coupling when at standstill. Since so many have it I have decided not to worry about it.

Not entirely correct observation you have there. Try to put your t-reg up the hill in a driveway or something and put transmission in "Park", you will have the same rumble as if it was in the "D". We are dealing with mounting issue, where engine vibration is being transferred onto frame.

I am a mechanical engineer by profession and know a bearing rumble when I hear one, (in my case) it is definitely some type release bearing noise, pure and simple. I don't see how a car which has covered 15,000 miles from new, could have knackered engine mountings. Your car may well have a different problem? I have just got back from the dealer who sold me the car, they took me for a ride in a t-reg with 5,000 miles on the clock (the sales managers car), and that made exactly the same noise. It is definitely some sort of release bearing, and they assured me they all do it.

I'm no ME, but I've never seen a throwout bearing in a torque-converter automatic tranny... Muffler bearing, maybe?

Mine seems to be rumbling less lately, but maybe I'm just used to it. Like the other 95%, I've been told it's normal and safe to ignore.

Cheers, John

I know there isn't a throwout bearing in there, but it is a bearing type noise, so there is something in there making it through metal to metal contact (a bearing of some kind). Auto boxes are amazing and complicated things, I am not a gearbox engineer so don't claim to know exactly what is going on inside the gearbox. However, I think that the main point here is that it is a normal noise for the Touareg box. Don't look for fault where there isn't one!

My favourite saying regarding machines (and the tendancy to dismantle them due to a noise) is:- "if it ain't broken, fix it till it is".

Mine does this as well, I dropped it off at the dealer monday for a few items and mentioned the transmission noise. The dealer called me tonight to say it should be done tomorrow and that the mechanic "figured out something with the transmission noise" I'm supposed to find out more tomorrow. I'll update if it's anything important.

Important!? - only the biggest mystery in the entire V10, do tell!

I just got my "new to me" 06 V10 and when it sits in gear at the light, I hear slight, but noticeable rumble from the drivetrain, however as soon as I let off the brake it goes away, same if I put it in neutral.
Any thoughts?
You had a very special and interesting idea !I highly appreciate your effort.
It really helps us a lot.

Rumble for me too.

Just picked up my 'new' 06 V10 today. 72,000 miles but drives and looks perfect. But I noticed the 'rumble' at the lights too. I also noticed that even on fairly light acceleration away from the lights she revs to 2000rpm. Seemed a bit busy for such a big engine.

Given that everyone has this rumble, I'll just shift into neutral at the lights and get my silence and try not to worry!

BTW I have a 2005 4.2 Audi A8 and the engine mounts on that car have 'electronic' damping that reports to VAG when they have failed. I know because I have now replaced both, but in either case, idle was perfect with no vibration even when the engine mount was reporting it had failed. I wonder if TRex has a similar type?

2006 V10

I'm wondering if the latest engine and transmission flash programming reduces or elimiates the problem? Do you know if your Treg has been reflashed?

If I could turn down the idle 50rpm I get the feeling the rumble would be far less. In idle in Neutral the engine is burning 1.2l/h but at idle in D, the consumption goes up to 1.5 litre/hr as the ECU increases throttle to maintain the same RPM. All that mighty V10 torque then gets soaked up by the transmission. I believe that's the source of the rumble.

Anyone know how to reduce the idle without a VAG?

Cheers,

pete

Mine does it.
If you shift to neutral it stops.
Assume its just the not-particularly-smooth-sounding engine on slightly higher throttle than idle doing its auto creep thing but held on the brake...

mine does it too, and every other V10 i've been in. I too have wondered about the cause and what can be done to eliminate it.....

I like the rumble, it's a diesel!
It sure is nothing compared to a Ford or Cummins diesel but still, since the V10 is so 'turbine smooth' the rest of the time its seems out of character to vibrate so much at idle in D. Its hard to know the differences between cars but my V10 rumbles quite loudly and the vibrations are felt a great deal :chainsaw:through the wheel and chassis, so much so I tend to use N at the lights. Not a trace of vibration then.

Does anyone know how to check if I have the latest Auto trans firmware version ? My VAG-COM reports:

Address 02: Auto Trans Labels: 09D-927-750.lbl
Part No SW: 09D 927 750 DP HW: 09D 927 750 DP
Component: AL 750 6A 0856
Revision: 00H51000 Serial number:
Coding: 0004216
Shop #: WSC 26097 444 12540
VCID: 7F071F542DE65CC
No fault code found.

I'll ask VW to check the trans firmware next time its in for service. Engine firmware is 9805.

Cheers,

Pete

2006 GROWLING

I have 06 v 10 as well and it does make that noise.Dealer replaced bearing on torque conv and noise is still present. They told me its normal after failed atempt to fix the issue. But looking at all treads and reading it seems its that way:D
