My power steering pump needs to be replaced and the only way to accomplish this is to drop the whole engine. Thankfully it will all be under warranty.

I am wondering, should have anything else replaced as long as it is easily accessible? Is there anything that warrants a close inspection given this opportunity?

Thanks

The whole thing could be given a close inspection while the lump is out!
Get your starting and charging systems checked with a midtronics tester before you have the engine out but be aware they won't replace anything under warranty unless it is actually broken!

On the V10 the engine has to be removed for the starter R&R. The generator R&R is done with the motor in place.

V10 has to come out?

Joe,

The first winter of ownership I noticed a whine from the steering, the dealer said that all Touaregs make that noise during the winter. This was total BS since the whine went away after adding fluid. I must have had the dealer top off the power steering fluid twice before I put up a stink about the disappearing fluid. There was NO visible leak anywhere so they added dye to the fluid and overfilled the reservoir. One month later the fluid level was down below the low mark and they still could not find the leak. So I borrowed a UV flashlight from one of my Technicians and searched all over for any sign of the dye. Still nothing. This was driving me nuts, out of desperation I removed the oil fill cap above the engine and shined a light down there. Sure as sh*t, there was dye mixed in with my oil. The pump on the v10's is inside the engine and some gasket or something must have been set incorrectly from the factory or just one just blew out. Showed this to the dealer and they were impressed, ordered a new pump and said they could do the whole job in one day. I had read about this happening to someone else on the forum and knew that it would be more like a week but let it slide. Well, the dealer called about four hours after I dropped it off and told me it would take about 7 days since they have to drop the motor.

Sorry for the ramble. Long story short, You need to put dye in the power steering fluid and check under the oil fill cap.

Sorry to hear that your warranty is over. I think I could live with the occational top off of fluid if I had to.

I have not had to put any fluid what so ever in the power steering, this is what puzzles me. The steering has been whining for about 8000 miles, but uses no fluid. So is the pump belt or gear driven? After all I have read on this forum, I do not even want to think about taking the car into the dealer. ayyeee....... I am not sure whether to take it to my German mechanic or into the dealer. Probably have to get the parts from the dealer. Most likely impossible to find a used one or rebuild. Anyone out there have experience?

Just remember the power steering fluid is auto trans oil.
If you are leaking oil into the engine it is not good. If you can't afford to swap the pump out at the least drain out as much of the fluid as you can, change the engine oil and fill the power steering back up with engine oil. Keep topping it up with engin oil but NEVER let the engine dipstick go over the max mark.

Hey Lothar - when your repair was completed, did the techs identify a root-cause of your fail? You speculated incorrect installation, or failed seal - I'm wondering if they added any detail?

Rob,
I promise to let you know what I find out. The Touareg is still at the dealer and I don't really know when I will get her back. Starting to feel bad about the 600 miles I have already put on the loaner.

Thank you Lothar - I am certain that a few folks will be very interested to get to the bottom of this. If you have a good relationship with the service manager or mechanic, it would be worth having photos documenting the problem & solution. Perhaps if you are a nosey-pushy customer and get in there to snap shots once in a while they will be motivated to move a bit quicker.

FYI: book-time on the engine remove/replace is just a hair under 20hrs. Once the engine is on the ground then there are hours to do the stuff on it. So all-in, these accessories when they fail are potentially BIG ticket repair bills.

You should be quite forecefull on the issue of hose & fitting inspection/replacement as well as completing any other engine-out related TSB's on the while-you're-there program.

Best of luck.

power steering whining

my power steering was whining and my engine was dropped twice to ultimately find that the air conditioner was the problem, power steering and all hoses were replaced. Despite my concern about getting things back together and the awesome site of the engine sitting beside my car- all is well now and has been for 12K miles since the repair. The beast does vibrate a bit at idle at stoplights but this seems to be common and I just live with it. Of note, a VW engineer was sent to ultimately diagnose the vibration after the initial engine drop and steering pump replacement. It did take a long time- I drove a rental for about one month, but overall I was happy to get it resolved and happy with my dealer (Wray automotive) and with the VW customer service rep. I figure this is the price I pay for driving such a unique vehicle. Despite all of this I would'nt trade my V10 for anything. It remains a rocket on 4 wheels

Just on engine removal, Mine was removed for a new turbo, it took 5 hours to remove, they used the special rack and dropped the whole thing down. Only problem I have now s some squeaks in the front LHS suspension that weren't there before.

manow & Bails- thanks for the information on the engine drops. Too bad on the A/C problem, actually, hard to believe.

5 hours seems pretty good. Are dealers that only shops that have the special rack to drop the engine? There are photos posted on this forum: http://www.clubtouareg.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=2239

Again, thanks for the information.

Engine back where it belongs.

My Touareg is finally intact and back where she belongs (under my right foot). I believe rallydogracing said, "book time was a hair under 20 hours for the removal and replacement of my engine". I think my dealer thought that meant 20 days, cause thats how long it took to get her back. I put almost 2000 miles on the v8 loaner that they had provided. Not knocking the dealer, because I was allowed to visit and speak with the technician whom I was very impressed with, especially his organizational skills and thoroughness. However, I was not allowed to see the old power steering pump, nor was I given a proper explanation as to why it failed. The dealer charged VWOA well over 4000 for the procedure. I still have a hard time believing that a power-steering pump failure would result in over $4000 spent at the dealer. I mean seriously, what the heck?
One odd side effect of the whole deal; I have yet to see the particulate filter do its thing. No white smoke, ever. I do see more brown smoke, you know, the kind typically associated with diesels.
On a side note; I have oversized tires (265/65-18) and after the engine was replaced, they had to preform an alignment. This resulted in rubbing when turning unless on the off-road setting. Long process and explanation. I apologize for not having more information about the the old pump.

Hope this helps a bit.

Lothar

Thanks for the report. Good to hear you are on the road again and everything is working. Again, thanks. Makes you wonder what the problem is with the pumps?
