Well Guys,
I have just been cursed and the check brake pads indicator has come on at 57,000kms.
Quick look and the fronts have maybe 2-3mm and twice that for the backs.
Have not noticed any reduced stopping power yet (and driving home with the western sun in your eyes lately have had the need to stop quickly some times).
I think I should be right until I am due for my 60,000km service but in the mean time I will shop around for a good price on replacement parts.

vw changed both the pads and rotors on the v6 i had...cost was around 2k!
So far the v10 brakes are holding well...
let us know how you go with sourcing replacements from the aftermarket....

When my indicator lights came on the dealer said I was still Ok for 5000K. I ended up spending $1750. I had new pads all around, new indicator contacts all around and new front discs.

I drove conservatively for about 1000km after light came on. Won't do that again as I thought I still had about 2 mm left. But I was forgetting that pads never wear completely square and it was way less than that on the leading edge that you can't readily see (front brakes).

I went to my friendly non-VW mechanic who ended up using genuine pads at a premiuim of about $20. $350 for R5 pads, $628 all up for front pads, machine front rotors and replace fluid.

Will most likely need new rotors at next pad replacement.

Guys, the blokes I used to replace pads and rotors on my V8 have told me that they can source pads and rotors for all Touareg models in Australia now via PBS and/or Bendix. I suggest you try a local brake specialist and see how you go.

When they did the full pads and rotors on the V8 it cost me less than $1K fitted. I recently took the R50 in for them to cast an eye over and check 3rd party availability and they confirmed supply. Don't get run ragged by the dealers taking your readdies.

Cheers

Just had the front brakes done.
New rotors, pads and wear contacts for $817.00, VW parts.
For those interested:
Wear indicator contacts (7L0907637) $82.36 (set)
Right front disc (includes rotors) (7L6615302N) $221.45 (each)
Left front disc (7L6615301N) $221.45 (each)
Pads (7L6698151E) $291.74 (set)

Had my dealer do it because I am too lazy (and my driveway is too step to take the wheels off). Just over a hours work.

Kms are at 57,000. Service Tech could not believe the milage I got with mostly city driving.

Should have put R5 ones on maybe could double the distance :~)

Hi FD, the v6 i had also had its pad/rotors changed around 55k. the stealer changed em all even though the light hadnt come on.

After paying the best part of a grand getting the rear rotors and pads replaced, I did a lot of internet hunting for the front.

Pads (7L6698151E) $291.74 (set) - This is the same pad as range rover SFP500070, which can be picked up from your local range rover dealer for about half the price, or grab a set for around $80 delivered I got mine here Range Rover L322 sport supercharge front brake pad set - eBay, Land Rover, Car Parts, Vehicle Parts Accessories. (end time 02-Jul-09 04:24:34 AEST)

Rotors - Contrary to what my dealer old me, there was adequate tolerance to skim the disc. They will need to be replaced next time

Sensors, again ebay is your friend, got a pair delivered for about $10
GENUINE VW BREMBO BRAKE PAD WEAR SENSORS TOUAREG FRONT on eBay (end time 23-Apr-09 11:47:58 BST)

Labour was $150 for fitting and skimming. I'm very happy with the result and saved near aroud $800.

After the fact found this forum, and got the following trade prices from hsy auto parts, so they look to be a very good local source

7L6 615 302N $ 175.50
7L0 907 637 $18.75

I called Boetcher motors, Ipswich Qld for OEM parts. $626 for front and rear pad sets and set of wear sensors. I think I'll call Bendix rep for parts prices. Seems like a lot of variation in pricing. Message in this thread is "do your homework'. I;ve only got 22K on the odo so have plenty of time to source

set of hawk HPS pads front and rear about $225 US
Set of sensors F/B $30 US
Shipping around $130 (2 day shipping)

Cost to get top quality brake parts far less then $626 (around $400)

yep R1Concepts have it on ebay, HPS and some other brands which are even cheaper. Will have to utilise your services nltomba....how much would it be to ship all four rotors and pads to Oz...approx?

Hi Singh,

Do not know exact weight but I estimate about 130 lbs total since you have the V10 (bit bigger brakes). Cost with a 50% discount on DHL rates will put it around $550 I think.
If you want a membership (for other stuff than Touareg parts). I will knock off an extra $20 off your 1st shipment

I located a complete new F&R set of 3.6 FSI slotted and drilled rotors and pads in US. $320USD but shipped USA only. I have a US relative in Illinois, and am now considering shipping to his address and he can snail mail items to me. Correct me if I am wrong Singh, but the FSI and TDI V6's should be running the same diameter brakes? I'm also running Q7 18" wheels.

Genuine V10 Pads, Q7 for $247.00 set. Front that is. For some reason Q7 is cheaper than VW V10, exactly same pad.

what about rotors Bails?

Not sure if V6 FSI & TDI have the same ones Oilslurper, the R5 definitely has a different size, etc

Just got back from NZ, saw lots of T1s, probably 6/day, on the ski field 4-6 at a time, and saw even more Q7s, got talking with a Q7 owner parked next to us at Cardrona, he reckons Q7 aftermarket parts are readily available in NZ and that anyone would have to be a dodo to buy from the dealership in NZ (deja vu anyone?), BTW, I asked him about changing rotors and pads at first service for Q7 he says no but he did so at second service (so glad I'm driving an R5).
Cheers

Snailmail will cost you, believe it or not, far more than with me doing it in two days with DHL
With the USPS it will cost you about $700 to ship snailmail
This is partially because USPS will not ship 130lbs so it has to go in two shipments of 65 lbs

Postage Price Calculator

With me you will be out $525-$550 for the shipment and have it delivered in two business days.

V6 fsi, V8 fsi and V6 tdi all have the 330mm rotors
V10 has 350mm
You can probaly get stuff for the R5 here too but not sure

Yep, pays do do one's homework on the parts stuff. Any info is good info though. I sort of figured the R5 and V10 would be different dimensions. Got a while to go yet B4 the rotors will need to come off.
