They are not really saying too much in regards to alt sizes are they?
Example is the 17" sizes, only limiting to 235/65R17 and 255/60R17. Even 18", 19", 20" and 21" sizes are limited to the one only size each.
Did they give you some indication on the age of that docunment? I think there are additional tyres available (17") that have been posted as being used by members of this site and VWWatercooled.
Coopers make H/T Plus in 255/55R18, Hankook RH06 the same size, Falken S/TZ04, as do Toyo OPAT. You can even buy Federal SS595 in that size. Only picking on 18" tyres because there is a greater option base out there then our 17" ones.

I am now at 22,500 and two are 0.5 mm off being illegal
I am considering changing to Pirelli ATR 235/65/R17. I want to keep the same rolling diameter while still in warranty which limits the 4WD tyre options in the 255/60/R17 size. The 235/65/R17 size seems to provide more options.

I have the Pirelli AT 235/65/17 (The ATR is newer and perhaps a little less aggressive). The list shows a Prielli AT 255/60/17. I didn't find a tyre in that size when shopping 10mths ago, it might not be available here.
I've been very happy with The ATs (8000K), and like you I wanted to stay with an endorsed size during the warranty period.
I possibly should have gone with the slightly larger size, as it was reported on this forum, that is corrects the speedo inaccuracy (~5km) and prvodes a minimal ammount of additional clearance.
I find the ride and handling of the Pirelli ATs quite acceptable, and good off road.
Not had a puncture. Not needed the spare as yet. They are a little noisey, but we think that's a reasonable trade off.

I am ready for new tyres and am looking for something that is not intrusive on the black stuff but can be deflated and do some light rock hopping and beach work.
Research on the net suggests 1st prise to be Pirelli STR 245/65 R 17 107H
What do you think?

what rubber is your Touareg currently wearing, how many kms and what was the wear like?
Just trying to judge what factory rubber is like. I will be up for tyres within 3-6 months and want to keep the on road handling but able to venture a little off road. Going to keep 255/60R 17 until a good set of Q7 18" alloys appear on ebay.

I was dealt with rubbish Good Year Wangler F1's. I say rubbish because they have no off road capability whatsoever, are uni directional, and wear quick. I have done 32k and could push it to 40k but that would be the limit.
I wouldnt try to go off road with these so want something (x5) that will still be good on road but also designed for light off road work. My logic on changing size was to correct my speedo error and have a slightly higher profile for offroad work?

Hi all,
what is recommended for an off-road MAINLY tyre?
I have a spare set of 17" rims for the bush, I am not sure what rubber to fit at this stage. I am not sure if 65 r17 is the tallest sidewall a Treg can go, does anyone know?
Also, what effect will insurance concerns have?

I have the same problem P zero Rosso's unlikely to make it to 30-35k! An ex perelli rep has just joined our company and he said that the P Zero compound is way too soft for a heavy vehicle like the Treg. He suggested ATR's. He is going to try and get another Pereli rep to come and have a look and may get some sort of discount off a new set.

Be very interested to hear the outcome. I tried to go that line with Volkswagen - not the right tyre for the Touareg, un-merchantable quality for a very expensive car. Unfortunately they did not want a bar of it and said go away.
I have only got 23k out of mine and they are illegal.

The OEM Michelins I currently have are around the low $400.00 each mark, I am just interested if the other popular brands as discussed in this thread are close to this pricing.
Not too concerned on getting the cheapest I can, but more interested in value for money. If I am looking at saving a $100.00 per tyre on something which will only give 2/3 of the wear I currently am experiencing then that is not really worth anything.

There is a Fortera here, but it is not a Triple Tread and it is not sold in a Treggy size.
