Just pulled these from my T3, does this mean the heater needs replacing?

Address 7E8: 2 Faults Found:
P205B - Reductant Tank Temperature Sensor: Implausible Signal
P205C - Reductant Tank Temperature Sensor: Short to GND

Well, I feel like I might be a chump. I bought a 2012 TDI today....

I traded in my 2014 Fiesta ST on a TDI Lux I saw in a Chrysler dealer 200 miles from me this morning. Halfway back home, CEL pops. I pull in my driveway, and get P202B. Google lead me here. All this week since I decided to upgrade my vehicle size I didn't see anything about this, just some random complaints about the infotainment system not being updated since the hardware is the same as the current model.

The Touareg I got has 74K, so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get any love at the dealer. For the guys that have just replaced the heater, does it seem to fix the issue, or do you start getting cascading problems? I unfortunately picked the car up at a dealer in SC and I live in NC, so basically I've got 14 days to get CEL free, or I'm parking my 'new' ride until I get the thing repaired. No inspection with an active CEL in NC. I cleared the CEL, and it must be hard faulted, as it came back in after a 2 mile drive.

Every time I buy a German car, I always think, 'this one will be different.' I really hope I'm right eventually, as this is the 5 German car I've had and never had one that didn't immediately become a headache.

Take it to a dealer and see if they will cover it under the 80K emissions warranty.

If not, it's a relatively easy replacement if you can wrench on you own vehicle, heater part is around $230 and and the DIY info is here: http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f73/t2-adblue-tank-heater-replacement-186417.html

I just replaced mine about a month ago in around 3 hours.

Also, pick up a Vagcom (VCDS) ODB cable from http://www.ross-tech.com you will be thankful you did!

I called the dealers here in the RDU area, and all told me to bring the car in for $150 diagnostic and once confirmed and the repair completed, they would submit a claim to VAGUSA. The tech manager I spoke with the most was from Lieth VW Cary and he told me that he had done 'numerous' of these repairs and none had been covered. He said this would be doubly so in my case, since the car is now a 'second-owner' vehicle. Whatever. I tried at least.

I found the part, 7P6198970A for $214 on sale on Parts.com. One question, is the heater only or is it the heater/pump assembly? I've seen it referred to as both.

nblanton, I am in the same boat as you are, I am the second owner. I ordered that same kit from idparts.com it is heater/temperature sensor only. The pump is a separate item. I plan on installing the kit this weekend.

So, being new to the whole Touareg and diesels in general, I'm learning a lot since I had an issue with the AdBlue heater right after I got the vehicle.

So, one of the reasons I traded out my Fiesta ST was I'm currently looking at getting a position with the State Dept. which required world-wide availability. I figured a VW diesel would be pretty well supported even in the worst places on earth and would be able to navigate potentially terrible third world roads. Now I find out about the DPF and how susceptible it is to damage if ULS diesel isn't available. Which may or not be the case. I've also seen some DPF delete kits and even complete emission system deletes available. Are these just bolt ons or is tuning required? Just curious about what I'm looking at facing if I take the Touareg somewhere I can't get the ULS fuel that's required.

I ordered my AdBlue heater today. I'll repost about the install once I get it in.

If you delete the DPF, a tune will definitely be needed.

As far as high sulfur fuels, yes can affect the DPF. Also, not using a VW 507.00 approved oil will clog it up as well. Be sure the oil you use is 507.00 approved (Will say on bottle). The easiest one to get is Mobil 1 ESP formula, usually sold at Autozone/O'Reillys, etc.

P205B

Well, add my second owner 2012 Lux TDI to the list! 58,000 miles and the "thousand dollar light" came on. I pulled the code "P205B/$07E8 reductant tank temp sensor circuit range / performance", Googled it and landed on this thread.

Anyone know exactly what part needs replacing. Just the sensor or should I replace the heater as well?

Given the current lay of the land with VW emissions scandal and all, do I have a shot at this being covered at the dealership under warranty?

Oh, and my other car is a 2013 Sportwagen TDI so I am feeling especially good about my car brand choices these days...

Go to your dealer and tell them they need to get VW to cough up.

You'll need https://www.parts.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=store.PartInfo&PartNumber=7P6198970A&VehicleID=378650&diagram=None&Title%3DVolkswagen-Touraeg-HEATER.

I just replaced mine on my new-to-me second owner Touareg. It took about 1 hour to do the entire job. You'll need a 13mm wrench to take the exhaust coupling apart. A 13mm socket and long extension to drop the rest of the muffler assembly. Once that's down, unbolt the rear sway bar with a 16mm socket. Drop the heat shield with a 10mm socket. Unhook the connections to the tank, they are on the driver's side of the AdBlue tank. There are three electrical connections and one fluid connection. Then drop the tank by removing the nuts that hold it in place with the 13mm socket. I was able to easily move my tank even completely full. On top of the heater is the pump. There are two electrical connectors to remove and three 4mm Allen screws and it'll lift off. Remove the ring and lift the top out. You'll need to give the heater a little bit of a counter-clockwise twist and it'll come out as well.

It goes back together pretty easy.

Have the same vehicle and VW covered the repair 100%. Customer goodwill as they described it.

This is the kit I purchased and did the work myself, last week. Bought it from ID Parts: AdBlueRepair Kit

Thanks nblanton - your outline of the repair was spot-on. I bought the parts.com AdBlue repair kit ($242.34 including shipping) and was able to drop the Ad-Blue tank, swap out the parts and reinstall in an easy afternoon roller-creeping around the garage floor. Cleared the codes and she's been good for 2 weeks now. Also was able to clean up the dried up AdBlue that the PO (or VW tech) spilled previously.

The Adblue heater recently crapped out on mine. The sad part is the entire adblue system was already replaced once before.

VW picked up the tab as a "goodwill". The dealer had the part in stock. Service manager mentioned there was a recent software update for the issue that will only be required if it throws a code after the new heater is installed.

The bonus was the tank was drained and now I have a fresh full tank of urea.

I had called my extended platinum fidelity warranty as a preemptive and they would have covered it, minus my $100 deductible.
