ESP Light in Dash Stays On

That is, the image of the car with two squiggly lines (like skidding) in front of it. Left of ABS light and above Seat Belt warning light. That is the traction control warning light, yes? It's orange and stays solid - not blinking or anything.

Pressing the ESP button by the shifter doesn't turn it off.
Comes back on immediately again after starting.
No noticable difference really in driving, except for maybe in my imagination it seems like I feel the brakes grabbing a bit more when I press on the pedal...

So, it's been on for a week. Got it into the dealer Thursday (soonest they had an appointment). And, they're struggling. Haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Any suggestions from y'all that I might give them? I'm driving the loaner over the weekend and missing my Treg!

I searched, but the only other post with a similar subject was by a guy in like Abu Dubai who's Touareg was tripping the traction control light when it had a fuel delivery problem (?).

Is it possible there was a spilled soda or something on the console? I say this in that if it was the switch was turned off while cleaning it up and now the goo under it is not allowing it to turn back on. If the light is on all the time it more then likely is telling you the system is turned off. Normal would be if you saw it come on the dash while driving that means you did something to invoke the ESP to work and it is telling you it did it's job in that situation. I say it is a bad/dirty switch.

Have you taken it off road or changed one, two, or three of the tires lately?

The light is solid to warn you a problem exists and the system has automatically been disabled. The system works with a variety of sensors so other then a couple very simple logical checks you'll likely need some computer diagnostics.

or the button is simply stuck as Yeti suggested. :)

Hi. Thanks for the replies. To address questions/issues:

Yeti:
- No soda/coffee spilled in ESP button. Always possible a drip managed a bullseye and got in there though, so I brought that up to the service rep (stuck or bad switch). He said they didn't get a code, but they'd definitely check.
- ESP light is constant from the time I start the vehicle and the dash becomes active. Pushing the ESP button does nothing. Have never seen the ESP light come on even momentarily prior to this.

willis5456:
- I emailed the service rep about your experience with the combo of brake warning light and ESP both coming on. I haven't had the brake warning light (or MFI notification) appear though. It's strictly the ESP light only. Nevertheless, worth checking.

safford1977:
- Went off road (shale covered dirt road) back in August. Prior to that I replaced the full set of tires. Same rim size, just new tires. Aspect ratio changed a tiny bit, but no ESP issues in the several months since, so I would think it's probably not related to that. They've had the car on the computer, but evidently whatever codes they're pulling aren't helping them narrow it down.

At this point they're going to try changing out whatever computer it is that controls ESP and hope that will fix it. I'll let you know what happens... Any more ideas, fire away. Thanks again those who've posted!

Hi Kevin
My problem was identical to yours...the squiggly lines etc and the brake sensor was the cause. Around $230 Aust for the part and a little under $200 for the labour. My man tells me its not an easy part to access but they managed and the problem has not recurred. You can still drive the Treg but be warned you have NO ESP!

Gentlemen:

So here's what it was: The steering angle sensor, and the steering column control/electronics unit.

Had to R&R the steering wheel, air bag, etc., in the steering column to replace the angle sensor. I believe the control unit was under the dash.

Service rep said around $1,000 worth of warranty work.

This thread is 4 years old and I don't see any others with this issue. Yesterday morning the squiggly lights and car came on solid. Also when using the backup camera, the lines that are superimposed for parallel parking disappeared. When I started the car later in the day, it came on but went off after about 5 miles for the remainder of a 45 minute trip. This morning it came back on and after clearing the codes, it still stays on. It is showing the following fault info below..

I am guessing that the steering angle sensor (G85) is the issue? Where is that sensor located?

Did you take it for another drive and if it disappears after driving again I will bet it's your battery.
I have had an issue with my electronics battery lately and that shows up but disappears after driving and resetting.

I will take it for another spin soon- after I pry it away from my wife...

I wondered if it was the battery also. How would I know if it was the battery. After sitting overnight, the battery is registering about 11.8v on the gauge.

Also, about 3 minuted into vagging the codes with just the radio on, I got the message that it was starting to shut off consumers (A/C which was not on anyway) unless this is normal although I don't recall seeing this before. The OEM battery is less than 3 yrs. old

My ESP light comes on and stays on after about 15 minutes of driving. Pushing the switch on and off doesn't change it. Also, about 15-20 minutes after the ESP light come on, the gear selector graphic on the dash screen changes. It goes from
P
R
N
D
S
With the one selected being lit in orange, to the same letters but the whole thing lit in orange. Like they are all selected. I changed the ATF last night, but it was too late to test it thoroughly. It shifts a ton smoother, but I only drove it for 5 minutes or so (finally got done at 2 am, did the oil change too).

Any ideas?

the 2 issues may not even be connected so have a scan done and advise what that reads.

I have same problem. The ESP lights comes on after about 5 minutes of driving then, after some delay, the shifter display changes to all orange. Anyone ever resolve this issue?
