Hello Everyone!
I'm looking for some opinions, suggestions rather. I have a 2005 v6 with approx 68,500miles on it- I was at the dealership friday setting up an appointment to get my inspection done and happend to see.............

they have one lonely 2008 V8 sitting there on the lot :(.

I asked a friend to just "run some numbers" for me......... and I was actually surprised at what he came back with. With all the incentives and such- they'd pay off my v6 (approx $21k) I'd get 0% for 72mo (as opposed to my 3.9% I'm paying now), BUT my payments would go up $150/mo.

Thing I have to consider is the V8 does not have a hitch on it- I'll have to have my new hitch uninstalled off the v6 and installed on the v8- approx $600 in labor, and of course have my brake controller re-installed.
My v6 is ok but getting up in mileage- I just had new brakes put on approx 10k miles ago (Alretta brakes). I know I"m going to be looking for tires in the near future (probably mid-winter).

It's one of those- do you keep the "evil you know" or the "evil you don't know" LOL.

It's Galapagos Grey also- I'm a HUGE reflex silver person though- but I think I finally need to venture away from my comfort zone LOL.

Should I do it? Thanks for any help
Amanda

Amanda,

Do you have an extended warrenty on your 05? your factory one is expired, you have new brakes which you probably paid too much for and have you maintained the 05 as directed by the dealership? do you tow now? do you need a tow hitch? a v8 will tow better due to more HP and TQ but will not get as good gas mileage. You are running premium gas now right? If you had to adust to pay for the extra 150 then I would suggest not buying a new vehicle unless you can afford it. too many people cannot afford the European cars and I always suggest go buy a Acura or Honda SUV.

think of the grey as a dark silver.

If you have all your maintainance done by someone who knows what they are doing, outside of the stealership then I would suggest keeping your V6, otherwise a new ride has all the cool new updates and the factory warranty, you can alway get the extended warranty on either T-reg.

vwfans:
I don't have the extended warranty on the 05 :( never bought it. I started towing w/my 05 in July- I have an open 18 ft car trailer that I use to tow my car to shows with. The v6 has been great, but I'm sure the v8 would be that much better!
I have been fairly diligent in having my 05 maintained by the dealership- though have been fighting alignment issues since day one. There are a few things that would need to be addressed on the 05 in order for me to keep it- but I just worry that the v8 deal is one that may be too good to pass up!!!
I've been looking at all the new "updates"! :) Just like a kid in a candy store LOL
Just found out they can get me REFLEX SILVER too!! :) SO happy!! :) haha

My 2 cents:

1) make sure you want a 5 year relationship with your new v8

2) Tow specs don't change between V6 and V8, but the V8 is a great tow vehicle...I can't compare to a V6, though others say it does just fine

3) have them throw in the hitch transfer procedure

4) 150/month more....but how many months more? Add those full payments on the V8 to no payments on the V6...you're already 72 x 150....how many additional payments are in the 72 than you currently have? Then figure you do not have 68k miles on the car to start with. You are paying for 68k miles, tires, etc.....

5) The v6TDI is coming soon....we think....that'll produce nice seat of the pants torque and be sold in NY state.....hmmm....did I just cloud the picture?

I have an 05 v8 bought on a 72 month 0.9% VW Credit note...I think I owe 15 more payments....so I am almost there...the car has 48k miles, I just bought a platinum ext warranty....and I will try to avoid sitting in a new one so I don't ask myself the same questions you are asking!

I could be swayed to a V6TDI...but I lose heated steering wheel and some other features...so I will probably stay put for a few years. Love the ride and performance and reliability I've had on this one...so I am going to run it a ways and hope for many more reliable years from it. The styling still gets me, the interior looks new, the paint just got a coat of wax....so....

good luck with your choice. it is nice to have options

LOL Thanks Jim! ;) Had to throw the V6tdi in there too! :p HAHA ( I had already been thinking about it)
my 05 was for 72 mo as well- so the length wouldn't change........... just adding $150 and going through buying new tires/brakes/maintenance (AGAIN)LOL
My first year I had the 05 I put about 32k miles on it- my commute was 2-2.5 times more than it is now, so I'm hoping to be able to keep the miles down a bit w/a new one- if I do it......... IF**

You guys are great! I feel bad clouding the forums with this type of post, but figured what better place to ask right?!?!?

Hmmmmm, since we are all nuts about cars this one is always tough to answer....

If you think 150/month is ok, so be it.
If you think you can live with another color, so be it.
I'd try to get the dealership to change the hitch/controler for free.

0% is very nice, acutally.

Not much help here.......

Later,
Andy

Well, it looks like the others have answered your questions. But, I have a question....

What is the show car you tow?? ;)

cool, so 150 a month more for x number of months...no new additional months...you get - in exchange, 68K miles, 3 yrs of mtnce.....not a bad option....

get them to do the hitch swap...play hard to get....then get them to put Nokian tires on it (good for 40-50k

the color choice is no longer an issue...not a bad deal....10 grand for new car smell, no maintnence issues, start at 0 miles...that's 2 grand per year.....hmmmmm.....keep us posted

Have them move the hitch for you. It won't cost them 20% of your cost. This is a great time to buy.

My friend at the car dealership just emailed me and said the General Sales Mgr at the dealership really wants me to take the galapagos one they have there (rather than locate and bring in another color) and the usual "What he has to do for you for you to like the tan interior?" LOL
What have I gotten myself into?!?!? :p haha

Hey Amanda,

You've had a lot of input so far, but I'm a month into owning an 08 V8 best choice I made... Its got a good amount of power and so much to drive. I didn't get quite the deal you did, 0% for 60 months.

Also the Galapagos grey is a great color... Not for everyone I guess. Get them to do the tow hitch for free and go for it.

Or, you could save a lot of $ and buy a very low mileage 2006, 7, or 8 V8 in the color you want and with the options you want from a private party.

Depending on the year, remember it'd still be under original factory warranty (didn't they lower the warranty duration in 2008 or something?).

Yeah, you'd have to come up with the financing on your own. You'd have to decide if the $ saved would be worth the extra effort. And, you'll have to do the math to see if under the current conditions, saving the depreciation by buying a used vehicle saves enough to make the effort worthwhile vs. the discounted dealer price.

Just a thought.

Do it!!!
The experience of having the air suspension, the upgrade in the upholstery, the 4 zone a/c, the ride experience is much better but also you are facing a major work for your actual Treg, the distribution belt or chain !!! at us prices I presume a 4 k repair!!!
so it would pay for the towing kit, and at least 3 k of the 150 dollars that you will be paying extra,so good luck!!!

If you regularly tow a car with your Egg, go for the V10 TDI. You will never regret it!

As well, the V10 TDI is the performance champ! Ours not only is a primo tow vehicle in terms of performance, it surpasses in the mpg department as well! For example: Towing my Porsche GT3 with a 4Runner V8: 9-11 mpg. With my Touareg V10 TDI: 14-15 mpg! And these figures are calculated form the odo and pump, not from the MFI, so are honest!

Be skeptical of reported MPG figures posted on this site: The Toureg's MFI is 10-15% optimistic.

BUT! Don't expect to recover the huge $$ premium for the V10 TDI via mpg improvement. Ain't gonna happen, not even close! The MFI mpg figure is for entertainment purposes only! You need to appreciate the V10's huge torque, the 3-way adjustable damping and the adjustable ride height. Only then will you get your money's worth for the King Kong V10! It's like nothing you've ever imagined!

I wish I could get the V-10!!!!! If I could win the lotto I'd be all set! :) I've been messing around with the numbers last nite, and according to my calculations- they're not really doing me any HUGE favor here- considering the rebates and such that vw is currently offering. I'm going into the dealership on wed nite to drive the v8, I'll have them physically show me all the numbers. Then I'll be back LOL :)
Once again- you guys never cease to amaze me with the weath of information and help on these forums! We've def got a good group here!!! :)

Amanda I'm from NY but live in Florida now.I just got my first treg. I got an 05 v8 loaded DVD nav , 19" wheels , factory hitch , air sus , pre loved , perfect service records,43,000 miles, reed green traded in my 01 Durango and paid 16,300 after my trade in they gave me 3700 for it. So just look around u will find what you want. For me the gas milage and the high miles on the car dident bother me I drive about 50 miles a month . Just my two cents.

Alright updates............boy do i have them!!! LOL first I was WAY off on the color of the v8 left on the lot it was Alaskan grey not galapagos, still w/tan interior. So I decided I didn't want that one. I really am in love with reflex silver and anthracite interior.....................so....
my fabulous dealership located 2 silver v8's for me. The first is out in South Dakota (I live in NY) it had the trailer hitch and floor mat kit already in it, it was going to cost me approx $1000 to have that truck brought in.
Then they found me another silver one in Long Island BUT it comes with the tech package and the hitch. (no cost to have it brought up to me).
Here's where the fun part comes in........... With the 0% for 72- they pay off my 05, the list on the one in LI is $52,930*.08+dmv costs= $57,391.90.
My dealership is willing to sell it to me for $49232.94 + 2,658.64 (tax minus credit for trade in) +dmv costs=$52119.08 sounds like a good deal so far right............ BUT i'm going to end up paying $56311.92 total. So they're essentially rolling in $4,192.84 from my 05 to pay it off. Payments would be $782.11/mo
Worth it? The way they described it is I'm still saving $1079.98 off the sticker price of the truck and getting out from under my 05.
AND i almost forgot- I'd be able to have the brand new hitch taken off the 05 and could sell that on my own to sort of recoup some of that money I already spent on it less than 2 months ago. (considering I towed three times with it)

What would u guys do?????
And of course it's not like I'm cutting it close or anything- freaking 0% ends on wed!! LOL

The numbers play out but you start off with a new debt of 56K how much do you owe on your 05???
