The V10 is going great, fantastic power and good economy. Pity about diesel prices  but I am getting 750-1000kms per tank depending on driving situation but you guys know all about that.

Now my next hurdle is finding tyres that wear reasonably at a good price.
I would prefer not spend $700 a tyre.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. ABI Wheels have 20" wheels with 75% tyres for around $500 each(Audi Q7 OE). Is it blasphemy to put Q7 wheels on a Touareg? Are 20" really the better way to go over 19"? I won't be doing much 4wding.

Currently have Hankooks which are quite soft I think, rated at 280 from memory. I have read here I should look for hardness around 400 for reasonable wear.

I am due to go on my first trip towing my sailing boat in September so looking forward to how she goes.

go the goodyear mtr's :)

I just replaced the original 19" Pirelli's at 45,000 k's, when they were totally worn out with a set of Bridgestone Dueller H/P's. The Pirellis had great grip, but I hardly used them to extreme, so they were a waste. The Bridgestones ride quieter, and certainly also give good grip (better in the wet). They only cost just over $500 each too, so that was a great saving. They have a treadwear rating of 300.

G'day
My wheels are 21" and no spare, so I think the best way around the problem is a set of 5 wheels, 20", fitted with BFG allterrain tyres for the odd offroad occasion. So, two points: 1) where to get a set of wheels, and 2) where to get a set of tyres...
Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of getting 18" wheels to increase the sidewall for more comfore and offroad ability plus the extended choice in tyres.
ebay or vw are the only source...

nokian WR SUV 255/50R19XL 107V available from Roof Carrier Systems in Melbourne

Tread wear rating is 460.
nokian WR SUV is a winter tyre that can be used year round and is used by several forum members in Melbourne and Sydney.

Hi All,

Dropped in for a quick response.

Pirelli 255/55/R19 M&S are available from Bob Jane at $475 each, treatwear rating is not known. Can not find anything M&S specs, M&S means Mud and snow, I think.

In Australia Pirelli have listed Scorpion ATR's P255/55/R19 111H, but these are not available, but this would have been my preference, treadwear rating is 520 with an A B rating for traction and temp.

I am just about to order Goodyear MTR's 255/55/R19 at $500 each fitted treadwear rating 380.

Choise of tyres are limited depending on driving needs. 95% on road, well go for quite 19" conventional tyres. If you intent to take your egg off-road, I fully recommend the MTR's, a little noisy, but who cares grip, side wall protection is great.

18 Inch rims will fit V10 calipers, 18 inch rims are costly but a greater range of tyres available. By warned about aftermarket rims, they may not cut the mustard when it comes to safety and capacity. Insurance companies may void insurance in the event of a incident.

good to hear from you Gerald, hope you had a great trip OS.
how many kms did your last set of mtr's last you?

Hi Singh,

A great trip to France for 2 weeks, all leisure. I actually saw many eggs even in the souther part around Cahors. One in particular had no ID badges, only CC, strange. After all they do eat snails.

Odo at 68K, got the tyres at 18.5K. I still intent to do approx 7 to 10K, but I am going high country tripping in November, so around October I will be getting the MTR's.

They are noisy compared to HP's or AT's, but it comes down to drivability in off-road conditions.

Hi Singh,

I am sorry to advice, the definitive answer from Pirelli in regards to the listed Scorpion ATR's P255/55/R19 111H, quote un-quote "These 255/55r19 atr are no longer available in Australia"

I have decided to stick with GY MTR's anyway.

Regards

bugger!....bring on the mtr's then I guess. I'm in melb t'row Gerald, if i get some time and you are free then I'll drop in for a yarn. I'll get the camerons dvd as well - I finally put it together!...anniversary edition ;)

Hi Singh,

I will be in the office all day. See you there if you get some time.

I still have not put Cameron's corner video and photos on CD. I did promise Bob and yourself. Something to do this weekend.

Cheers.

Gerald

humungus, the mtr's are great off road but if you are going to be doing only 5% offroad then it would be best to stick with HT's. There is the noise factor and some comparitve loss of traction on wet bitumen. Gerald is on his second set now so he can tell you a bit more about it.
Unfortunately there are no AT's available in 19s.
I'll remove 19s and replace them with the set of 18s I just bought, as there are plenty of choice with MTs or ATs.
