I was looking at the specs on the 4.2 V8 on both VW & Audi's site. On VW's site its iron block and belt driven, & Audi's site its aluminum block and chain driven. The HP & torque specs are same. Why 2 different engines, or is one spec wrong?

When Audi redesigned the S4 to fit the V8 engine, they also redesigned the engine to make it smaller and lighter. The switch from belt to chain was one of the things they did. VW gets the older designed belt engine.
The Q7 motor size is same as Touareg and same power. The S4 is different and belt driven.
The Q7 is chain driven & Touareg is belt driven, unless, VW made mistake. The older 2006 version is belt driven at 310 HP.

either way... belt's are cheaper and easier to change than pulling the motor for a worn / stretched chain, when the chain is in the back of the motor!

The $64,000 (almost!) question is, at what mileage does the chain have to be replaced? For the belt (06 and earlier V8s), it's 80K miles IIRC. My owners manual (I have the "BAR" V-8 in my '07) says 80K but I think they just did not change the manual in time (There are quite a few inconsistencies in there). Does anybody have a V8 '08 and can you let us know what that manual says?
(The V6 has a chain for all years and does not need to be replaced, IIRC)

Thanks!

nothing in Ebahn, I would assume @140k.... they are still pretty new, only time will tell. When you start getting cam position sensor fault codes, and erratic misfire monitors, it will be time.

I was told by a mechanic that timing chain on any vehicle only gets replaced when it starts making noise. Otherwise they are maint free.
