Well I got my car back a couple of weeks ago from the shop after being there for 2 months. Today it started making a thumping noise under acceleration that sounds like the transmission is bouncing under the shift lever. dealership had to drop my engine twice for repairs and now I'm wondering if they didn't tighten something or forgot a bolt or two. There seems to be a lot of play in the rubber bushing that connects the driveshaft to the transmission, is this normal? I wouldn't think so. I've read here about driveshaft bearings needing replacement but is that the one connecting to the tranny or the rear diff? Should there be any movement at all with this rubber bushing?

Although I have heard the horror stories of others and their drive shaft issues, I haven't heard of them feeling or hearing a thumping or bumping noise while driving. From what I have heard the sound is more like a slight vibration and humming sound. Did you actually move the shaft around and see that there is allot of play in the bushing?

I was under the car and I could move the shaft around. Not a lot, but there seemed to be too much movement for a driveshaft. I could be wrong seeing that the rubber bushing is designed for a twisting force and not a up and down pushing movement.

OK, I have an 04',and I just checked mine and it moves around as well. Mine didn't move that much so that must be normal, plus, with the amount of tourque you have in that monster, that shaft would break into 20 pieces if you really got on the gas hard if it didn't have some play in it!

Nothing to do with shifting, just thumps when accelerating kinda hard. If I'm real easy there is no noise. I can feel the thumping like something is bouncing up and down. Sounds like it right under the shifter. I'm hoping the idiots just didn't tighten something down real good. This is a new noise that I didn't here for the last couple of weeks since getting it back.

I have an 04 and can't even move my drive shaft when I crawl under it. I can't twist it or move it up and down. So not sure what that means with the two of yours, but mine is pretty solid.

OK after a little more snooping, it seems to be the bushing above the support where there is a joint. Its moving around a lot there. Its a round doughnut bushing. Is this easy to replace and can I buy this somewhere else besides the dealership? Seems to be pretty easy to get to and to replace myself.

UH OH...... Really? I figured since the Touareg is an off road vehicle that it would have to have some type play. I've seen it on the show TRUCKS! on Spike TV but it was a JEEP, maybe that's why I am getting confused:confused:
Am I missing something here?

Mine has a fair amount of play in it, which manifests itself as a clunk when going on and off the throttle. I have had checked out at the shop twice by the shop foreman. It seems to be a normal thing, as nearly every Touareg on their lot had slack in the driveline in one form or another, which was demonstrated to me. I've since stopped worrying about it.

well it finally gave out on the drive home. It is deffinately the carrier bushing above the cross member. I needed to keep it at around 40 mph for the entire 280 mile drive home so it would bounce around. Dealership wants $250 for the part. I guess I'll let them do it if the realdriver warranty will cover it. They usually deny everything until you fight it. I couldn't find the part listed anywhere on the 1stvwpart site. This truck has been one giant POS since I've owned it. This will be just one more weekend ruined by not having a tow vehicle for the boat.

Its hard to tell but I don't think so. It is a round bearing that holds the axel in place where there is a joint about a foot being where it connects to the rubber bushing from the tranny. I'll post a pic.

Ah, I think you may be referring to the rear driveshaft carrier bearing. If this is the case, the dealer will likely want to replace the rear driveshaft, as it comes as one unit. I just had this done on my '05 V6 at 48k miles, and they replaced the entire rear driveshaft (from transfer case to rear diff) to replace the failing carrier bearing. This seems to be the case with many others that have posted about this issue here and on VWVortex.

i think that is it. Car was in the shop for 2 months for other repairs, I have it for 2 weeks now it goes back in. I've had this car for less then a year and its been in the shop for 3+ months. Time to dump this POS.
