I have to say, installing floor mats is NOT mechanical…. :)
When I bought my New Beetle I also got a set of the thick rubber floor mats. The guy at the service department "installed" them and said that since he did it (at no charge) and it showed on the invoice then they were covered under warranty.

Not sure if that was really true because nothing has ever happened to them for me to take the mats in for service.

I'm NEVER going to hear the end of this floormat install, am I? :p
In my defence, it's not like I went in for the single purpose of having them installed. They were installed with a bunch of other service items.

WooHoo!
VCDS and T91 remote came in last night!

So the first thing I did last night go out and scan the car.

Some errors like TPMS I've already started to correct.
I ordered up new ones from eBay;
TPMS OE Replacement Tire Sensor Ferrari Porsche Volkswagen Touareg BY EMS 5 | eBay

Other errors like...
Engine Control Module
004 - No Signal/Communication

... and ...
Fuse for Control Module for Power Supply to Vehicle Battery (S287)
014 - Defective

... scare me.

What should my next step be?
Go over every fuse and see if I can find the blown one and replace?
Maybe I'll do that tonight.

Arggg, Now I'm loosing sleep. Lol....

KGL-4201 came in today.
H7 LED Fog lights as well.

I did manage to install the LED fog lights myself, and man they look good.
They do throw the check lights error code though.
Either an inline resistor or a vagcom to remove the warning? I'll keep searching for the solution.

Speaking of vagcom, this afternoon I did the seatbelt chime delete, what you guys call the six gun salute, and changed over the trans mission to 4202 ROW.

Later this evening I started the KGL install. Loads of fun. There was a JVC aftermarket radio installed. What a butchers job I found in there.
There is another story to the new radio, but I can't talk about it until I make successful contact with a member here first. But she's a doozy of a story.

Also, I'm thinking of changing my tune from Malone to Custom Spooling.
Although the Malone tune added 50hp, it only added 10lb-ft.
Maybe I'm already used to it, but it still doesn't feel like enough.
Lol, maybe I'd to used to the Rzr 1000 and the sleds, but I want this car to feel like them.
The Custom Spooling tune says it adds another 40lb-ft over top of Malone's tune.
Any of you guys ever run both tunes?
Which one gives more umph?

Have you spoken about your issue with Malone tuning.
I believe to get the best tune for your vehicle you need to do some VCDS logging as per the attachment.
You should be able then to get a specific tune for your car or even their stage 2 tune.

No I haven't.
And as I read some more I think that your probably right.
Thanks for taking the time to provide that link.
I'm going to do that logging and then contact Mark and ask him what else he can do for me.
I think I'd like to get the most that I can out of this new toy.

Thanks again.

Never mind the toys - I'll say it again - YOU need to check the correct oil was/is being used. VW dealers can get it wrong on the V10 which is why I made the point in the first place.
Based on the courtesy oil change reminder sticker on the windshield from the previous owner it is time for my first oil change.

And thus began the search on CT for what kind of oil to use.
Wow!
I've learned more in the last couple of days about oil than I ever wanted or needed to know.

I don't think I'm going to send out the oil for sampling, but here is what I did decide to order.

- Pela Pro 14 for topside oil changes.
- Amsoil AFL5L-EA x4; (No DPF to worry about)
European Car Formula 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil
Mid-SAPS European Oil for European Gasoline and Diesel Engines

What a great resource CT is for the new guys.
Thanks again Nooby for insisting on oil before toys. Good thinking, even if I didn't want to listen at first. Lol

Bump because I like this thread.

Mark can add more torque for you if that's what you want. I suspect that he isn't adding a lot of torque because of the potential for driveline damage if you get a little too happy with the happy pedal.

In my defence, it's not like I went in for the single purpose of having them installed. They were installed with a bunch of other service items.
Don't sweat it. People pay others to shovel snow for them and that isn't very technical either. If you want to pay someone to do a job for you and you have the means to do, all the more power to you. And you are helping to keep unemployment low.

UPDATE:
The winter is over.
The snow is almost melted. Only 6 inches or so left in the bush.
The car was pulled out of winter storage a few days ago.
It's time to get back to modding the v10!

Over the winter I had a hard time getting a response from Mr. Malone.
And when I did, he confirmed that this was as good as his tunes get.
He wasn't going to do anything more for me.
So after a little bit of research last night, it looks like I'll be upgrading to a Unitronic S1+ tune.
On Monday, I'll call and book an appnt for install.
The dealer is about an 4 hour drive from me.

In summary, the Malone tune is better than OEM, but not as good as you can get.
Meh, live and learn.

The Dectane LED taillights arrived over the winter.
I installed them yesterday afternoon.
I think they look good.
Install was a breeze.
And I received the correct controllers.
Couldn't be happier.

Next up I think I'll order myself the Paser Unico dual plus hybrid canbus resistive Steering Wheel Controller w/the VW wiring harness.
SW Commands Interface - For Aftermarket Radio - Unico Dual Plus - Products - Paser Srl
I think it's time to get the SWC and the reverse input working on the Android HU.

As an aside, I'm getting old and forgetful.
When I put the car away for the winter, I removed the LTE 4G wireless internet from the glove box.
I wanted to put it in a 'safe-place' so I wouldn't loose it.
Do you think that I can find it now????
NO!!!!!
Bah. Another $250 to go buy another one.

And now since installing an Android HU in my wife's VW GSW last week, she wants the internet in her car too.
I'm off to the local Rogers store on Monday.

Update:
I think I'm finally liking the Malone Tune.
I think it was me.

I was driving it like I would my modified gas 5.3L v8.
Drop a gear and rev the **** out of it and get frustrated with the results.
I wasn't driving the v10 like a diesel.

Since this spring, I've discovered that driving between 2000 and 3000rpm gives the best acceleration.
Revving much past 3k does almost nothing for me.

Driving around town locked in 4th gear gives me some of the excitement that I was looking for.

Similarly, When following someone on the Hwy doing 100 and I want to pass, I lock it in 6th gear and ride the tourque curve, smiling all the way.

Not that I've ever tried it, but they say that locked in 6th using this method can bring you from 100 to 180-200 and back down to 100 in less than a minute.

All I know is that I am happier than ever with the v10.

My wife dragged me out to Midland to go look at a 40' boat today.

On my way there I could feel a new vibration and some knocking in the center console.
In addition there was a whining noise.
Uh oh. The dreaded center driveline bearing.

I did manage to get home ok.
But it's now parked in the driveway until I get some replacement parts.

Last year I bought a new Vertex EPS replacement rubber mount and the rubber vibration disk from a forum member just in case I would need it.
However I think the bearing is also on it's way out.
Because I am not mechanically inclined at all, I think my choices are a reman drive shaft or a new OEM shaft from the dealer.

I sent an email to these guys asking how much shipping is to my place.
vw touareg/porcshe cayenne drive shaft. | transmission, drive train | Gatineau | Kijiji

We'll see what happens.

If you buy a recon shaft make sure the supplier knows it is for a V10 - that car's shaft is slightly shorter.

Discussion starter · #37 ·
Good to know.
Thanks!

Sooo instead of buying from a random French(Quebec) store from Kijiji, is there a forum preferred vendor to buy these drive shafts from?

No. To be honest there are plenty of workshops perfectly capable of replacing a drive shaft bearing for you. This is a big business sector for trucks, coaches, off-roaders, quarry vehicles, all sorts of stuff, so Google and ask around.

UPDATE:

So after checking with a few guys around town, it turns out that small random Quebec shop is CVTech.
They do all kinds of work. Good work.
Most guys send their sled jugs up there for nickelsil'ing.
But the point is they are reputable.

My dad and I spent 6 hours to take the drive shaft out.
Packed it up and shipped it out.
It was back in two days with a new center bearing and hanger.
It even had a red seal on it.
Only took 3 hours to put it back in.
Total costs? $440CDN.
That was the good news.

Took it for a drive to Spanish, On to take a boat ride.
(just bought a 40' yacht)
Turns out the car still growls like a bad bearing.
Hmmm, what else could it be?
It sounds like it's coming from the front drivers side.
Wheel bearing?
The sound doesn't vary when driving from side to side, but it must be.

Dropped off the v10 to the local vw dealership.
They confirmed a bad wheel bearing and after $630CDN I got the car back.

Again I take the car to Spanish for a boat ride this weekend.
Again the car still sounds like it has a bad bearing in the front.

The loud annoying growl is gone, but between 80 and 100 there is definitely a pulsing whine in there.

So a quick search here reveals that it must be a front differential.
But I'm at a loss.
What component is it?
And the local dealership just told me the car is fine.
$1100 bucks into it and it still whines.
Not complaining too loudly though. That was still maintenance that needed to be done.
Just wish it would end. Lol

Maybe I'll start shopping for a new diff.

Hopefully it all gets resolved soon, I only have two months of driving it for this season before it goes back into winter storage.

Might sound pretty obvious but we have a lot of cars come into the workshop complaining of suspected wheel bearing problems (reported by customers) that turn out to be the tyres worn weird that cause the noise.

swap the wheels around and see if the noise moves......
