I just bought an '05 Reed Green Touareg to replace my '97 A8. I love it so far, I just hate having a car payment again. :(

Anyways, I've got a few questions. I have a Phatbox in my A8 that I'd like to move over. In the picture below, is the CD Changer cable the one with the black connector? If so, what's the green connector for?

Also, how can I tell what options the car has (is there a VIN decoder?) and what headlights I have? I don't know if I have xenons or the four zone climate control. I'd look this stuff up in the owners manual but sadly there wasn't one in the glove box.

What else should I know about my new car? Thanks in advance!

Hello, and welcome to the club!

That green plug is the ground connection for the trailer hitch wiring. I'll assume you don't have a hitch, or if you do, that it doesn't have the OEM wiring harness/control module.

The easiest way to tell which headlights you have is this: If you have four projector lenses (two per side, all four look the same), as well as headlight washer pop-ups in the bumper, you have the Bi-Xenons. If you have two projectors and two reflectors, and no headlight washers, you have halogen.

For four-zone, there are many ways to tell. If there are HVAC controls on the back of the console, you have it. If you don't have a storage cubby in the left-rear compartment of the trunk, you have four-zone.

One thing that would make this diagnosis easier: You've got to post some pics of that new ride up here! We can deduce a lot from some good quality pics. Or, go to the dealer, give them the VIN, and they can tell you what all it has.

Enjoy!
Matt

PS-Where are you located at?

With regard to the owners manual, there is an almost secret door on the "ceiling" of the glove box that contains the owners manual. I bitched to our dealer that we didn't have the owners manual, and then my son said, "hey, what's this button for" (it's more of a tab than a button) and down came the manual.

If I am stating the obvious my apologies, but it wasn't obvious to me.

Enjoy your egg!

Thanks for the welcome and replies! I'm in Boise, ID (apparently I didn't fill my profile out yet). No hitch, unfortunately, and I'm trying to read through some threads and see what a good solution to that problem is. Doesn't sound like I have four zone and I don't have TPMS, but I think I've got the bi-xenons. Do all headlights do the auto-level dance on startup?

I'll post some pictures soon, yesterday was a busy day...I didn't even get to enjoy the truck, just work work work.

Only the xenons on the Touareg do the start-up dance. So, if it does the headlight boogie when you turn the key, you have the xenons.

Hitch-wise, I personally am partial to the OEM hitch setup. The wiring plugs into the car's harness (albeit with a good bit of effort); the alarm is integrated so that if it is set and the trailer is unplugged, it sounds the alarm; and the OEM Westfalia hitch gives you the highest tow rating (7716 lbs OEM vs 6000lbs for all the aftermarkets). The fact that you don't have to splice/hack wires is the best reason to use the OEM wiring, and I prefer the OEM hitch hardware as well. It is more expensive, but it is beefy and very well integrated.
