Back in the late 70's when I was driving a BMW 2002 it was customary to blink ones headlights when you saw another oncoming 2002. As a proud new owner of a 2004 V8 Touareg, I'd like to revive this practice with Touareg owners. Is this something that is already practiced? If not and you come driving toward me, I'll be sure to give you a wink.:wink:

The "blink" and the "wave" are both used by members here, with varying results. In 2.5 years, I've received one wave back, and waved/blinked a ton (probably dozens) of times. Most people around Vegas don't care I think.

That blink was a given between Porsche drivers back in the 50/60/70's but died, I guess people started to feel bothered and did not understand that it was a "brotherhood" thingy. My dad used to blink other 911 drivers when I was a kid. Never did it when I used to drive a 2002 (yes, I had one, too!). Today only very few Treg drivers give a signal, heck, even my friend driving a Treg doesn't do it..

The Touareg is too new and too trendy - people buy and sell new cars faster than people can wear out their socks. So there isn't really a cult following for these cars. To most, I think the Touareg is like driving a Ford Focus - it's just a car that suits their needs at the time.

I also drive Volkswagen Vanagon Syncros and an LT 4x4 and I would say four out of five that I meet on the road either wave or flash their lights at me. People own this vintage of vehicle by choice rather than by a pure fashion accessory.

Maybe here in the home of the leisurely "one finger wave" (not to be confused with a "bird") I can encourage some of the local Treg owners to accept a friendly wink or wave and possibly to return the gesture. Granted there are very few of us rolling around. Everybody and their sister seems to drive a Lexus RX 350 in this town. :)

My "other car" is a 1966 VW panel van. I've had it almost 34 years. We of the "split window" family give the "peace sign" to each other. About 99% of us here in SoCal do it....been going on for I don't know how many years.

Touareg Comradary

I too had BMW 2002s in the early to mid 70s. It was quite common to flash your lights at other 2002s with the same response back. I have tried to continue it with Touaregs with mixed results. Overall, I think the Touareg owners/drivers are of the same cut of cloth as the 2002 drivers, we bought the vehicles for what they were/are, not for what others think. Back in the 70s, BMW was not the yuppie/snobby car it is today. We know what we have with our Touaregs, we do not need the nomanclature.
BTW, what is the difference between a BMW and a porcupine, the porcupine has the prick on the outside! HA

I just made a trip from Troy, Ohio to Romeoville, Il. Then out to Sioux City, Ia. I too like to blink and wave at other Treg owners. In this resent trip I saw 6 Tregs and none of them blinked or waved back. One of these sitings was in Sioux City at the hospital. I pulled into the lot and saw a nice black V8 parked out all by itself. So I parked next to it(giving ample room between the vehicles) and was talking to my wife on the cell phone. The female owner of the black Treg came out while i was still on the phone. She looked at me, I waved, she gave me a disgusted look. Then gave the my treg a once over. I waved again and she shook her head at me in disgust. Every motorcycle rider can wave at each other. But the Treggers I have encountered are not capable of continuing the brotherhood.I wish this could change. And I will continue to blink and wave.

Here in the UK there are two meanings for flashing your headlights, one official, the other unofficial.
The official one,as used in our Highway Code(the Bible by which the government expects us to drive safely and on which all tuition is based ) states that "flashing" should only be a means of letting other road users know you are there. Therefore if you flash a friend going the opposite way you could be alerting the police car ahead that you're there and he may well wonder why he is being flashed. Not a good idea!
The unofficial meaning, and this is universally used and understood although the government will not approve it,is a give way signal. That is you will flash someone to let them out, allow them to change laneetc. The unofficial acknowledgement to this, and truck drivers nearly always do it is to flash your left indicator and then your right,
We all understand this.
In Switzerland motor cycle riders will always wave to other motorcyclists, regardless of make of bike.
In rural Ireland the one finger wave (friendly)is often given even though the driver doesn't know you.
They are very friendly folk!

One of the most intelligent responses I have seen on this forum.
