I've taken my 2004 V6 Touareg in for a smog. They first told me to drive it a few hundred miles because I had just had a new starter put in. Now after driving 1200 miles it's still won't pass. The report states the OBDII is not ready. What does that even mean? It states the secondary air system not ready.
Anyone know what I have to do and how much it's going to set me back?

What? Why would they have you drive it after a starter replacement to pass smog?

Do you have a vagcom?

I don't even know what that is, so I doubt I have it. I went to 2 different places and both places told me I needed to drive it.

I am so stressed, my tags are a month behind and no one seems to be able to help.

You don't know what smog is or you don't know what secondary air system is?

Dude go to a repair shop that specializes in VW or a dealership and get it diagnosed. Sounds like you don't know much about automotive repair and you don't have time to learn. Spend the money, get it fixed and learn about your car if your an enthusiast. This forum is helpful if you have a vagcom and know your way around an engine bay.

X2 a shop with vagcom can diagnose any issues or use vagcom to set the readiness.

He is referring to a special vw compatible cable to connect your car to a computer running vw diagnostic software,

There is a thread where people have posted if they have the cable and software, you just need to find a local thread member to you who can help you scan your car, it only takes 5 minutes.

It's not going to fix his issue, if the readiness code isn't setting with no c.e.l. there is an underlying issue that it probably at the professional technician level of comprehension.

You fail smog instantly if you have a c.e.l. on even if it passes the gas analyzer test

Thank you all. I have been to the mechanic that's done all of my work and he hooked it up to a machine and couldn't find anything wrong. I'm going to the dealer this weekend. I was just hoping to get a little knowledge so I didn't go in blind. The dealers out here are some of the shadiest and being female they see walking dollar signs.

Hi, when was the last time your vehicle had diagnostic check and tune up?

Some techs have found brand new vehicles barely meet emissions tests. Due to the age and possible high mileage your vehicle may have, it could cost you a lot to meet the emissions test.

When you take it to a shop for diagnostic testing, they will most likely say it needs a tune up to start. Air filter, spark plugs, etc. are usual wear items which require periodic replacement.

If no other faults are found, have it tested after the repair(s) are completed. If it still does not pass, you may be looking at replacement of catalytic converter(s), etc in the exhaust system of your vehicle.

If possible, get repair quotes from more than one shop.

Best of luck, this could get expensive to get your vehicle to meet the emissions test.

Most likely you were told to drive it because the monitors are not all set. Any time codes are cleared, it resets all the monitors. Once that happens, they have to go through their self test/set cycle. All monitors now have to be set in order to pass CA smog check. That includes the secondary air injection system. Secondary air injection issues will not always throw a CEL either. You definitely need to take it to someone who knows the vehicle.

And for those not familiar with CA smog, a sniffer is no longer used. Test is 100% taken through the OBDII port.

Yes
I've had a tune up, oil change, new starter, new gas pan, new fuel pumps and a few other pumps and tubes replaced. It passed last year without any work being done now after thousands of dollars in work it won't pass. ? I'm going to get it tested and will report back. Thank you all for your help or input.

The smog test is not stating I failed its stating that everything passed except for the air system and that says its not ready.

Like I mentioned above, the secondary air injection system will not always throw a CEL. As you now see...

The monitor is not set. That is the only thing keeping you from passing the smog check. Performing a VAGCOM scan will tell you nothing as there are no codes.

You really need to take the vehicle to someone who knows these vehicles. Its quite possible that this is a very simple fix. Just going to take someone that knows where to look.

Ditto, also you should have your charging system and battery checked for the load management dtc
