Has anyone attempted to install a wireless carplay adapter like carlinkit to our systems, it's a box (dongle) that gets plugged in to the usb port connecting your phone (iphone in my case) to the device and displaying carplay in the car, ... without the need to connect the cable everytime you want to use carplay feature.
Thanks

With the assumption you have a CR, the answer is yes, some of these Carlinkit adapters will work to give you wireless carplay

The Ottocast one works well. Obviously a prerequisite is that you already have wired carplay, and you just want to go wireless.
Yep. My car has wired carplay. Last week I ordered the CarlinKit Wireless CarPlay adaptor from their website store. will report back after testing.

They're all quirky options that aren't going to work good

OK well I guess I owe you all a mini-review!

The adapter arrived Friday afternoon, so I popped it into the truck as soon as I got home. Pairing was a bit finicky, and the instructions are pure ****e. However, it seemed to connect at first, then it didn't, then it did. At one point when it was connected, I was able to go to the update website and it said there was an updated firmware--this is absolutely critical. After installing the firmware, the unit was more stable and seemed to work the way you would expect.

So today I drove around with it, about 7-8 times in and out of the car. All but once my phone connected and the Carplay began automatically. I would say it takes 15-20 seconds after you turn the car on for your phone to connect. The experience has been generally good, but not flawless.

Positives:
When it works, which has been 90% of the time, it's really neat. Phone is tucked away in my pocket and I have full Carplay access
Negatives/unknowns:
Remote start might be an issue. The one time it didn't connect for me was when I used remote start. I unplugged the unit from the USB port and reconnected it and my phone connected to it fine after that
My backup camera has been iffy while the unit is plugged in. Sometimes it doesn't come up automatically when going into reverse--but other times it works just fine so I'm not sure what's going on. The screen icon works just fine
One time, I shut the truck off and it restarted itself immediately. That was very weird. Did I mash the start button twice by accident, or was something else going on? I don't know.
There is a very slight lag when using the Carplay interfece vs. hard wired. However, it's more than acceptable.
I'm not sure how wireless Carplay is supposed to work, but this unit seems to connect to your phone via both bluetooth & wifi. However, niether one actually shows that they are connected from the phone side once you are actually using the unit.
The center console USB port does not work for Carplay. It looks like you must use either 1/2 that are under the screen, or #3 in the back seat if you have that option.
So the bottom line is that it's new/experimental, but if it works for me the way it did today I would be very happy. I have not spent enough time in the truck to experience all of the bugs I'm sure, but if I've seen the worst of it then this is a great improvement from stock

Tips: disconnect/forget the Uconnect in the truck and then update the firmware immediately. I am using an iPhone 11 on iOS 13.4

Can you show us a link of what you bought and can you send some pictures of what it looks like in your car when it's operational? Or maybe a video showing this?

To anyone interested a CarPlay retrofit, I spent a lot of time researching the different models, and I would highly recommend the carlinkit 4.0 version. There is very little information about the differences between the models, so I wanted to share my experiences.

The carlinkit 4.0 version offers wireless CarPlay and a self contained control unit. It is sold on several different platforms, but I purchased mine from (U2W Plus) Carlinkit 4.0 Wireless CarPlay & Wireless Android Auto Adap. The seller was very responsive, responding within 24hrs to all of my questions. It’s important to know that for most models you need the full kit, not the cheaper usb dongle.

One of the the biggest things to look for when purchasing one of these units is a seller that understands the differences between the infotainment systems in each model car. While the control box is the same (you just change the dip switches) the cables vary depending on whether you have a non nav control knob, nav control joystick, or later model touch pad. If you include these specifications when you order, it avoids many of the installation problems many people have with these kits.

Instead of using analog rca inputs, the box accepts a direct usb or wireless connection, and avoids a lot of bulk and cable management issues. The kit functions like a stock CarPlay system and retains all of the built in features like the backup camera, microphone, and steering wheel controls, and even on the smaller “non-nav” screen, the resolution looks great, not pixelated or stretched.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but hopefully this helps car owners looking for a CarPlay retrofit.

I asked the customer service before, and the product supports all cars with carplay. If the car itself does not have carplay, it is indeed not supported.
But touareg doesn't have car play
