As mentioned on a previous thread I just put a set of Michelin latitude HP tires on my 11 TDI lux and I am also really just tooling around in the snow for the first time but I figured I would put down a impression on the snow ability of the tires and the T overall in the snow.
If you look at the ratings for the tire online it falls in the 6-7 catagory out of ten in snow prowess. I would have to agree with that and would say it is probably average instead of noteworthy or excellent. Of course they are very wide and are not bespoke snow tires but I have run into a few all season tires over the years that really stand out in the snow. Unfortunately they were not options for this machine.
I have to say I am not having the spiritual experience with the vehicle in the snow that I expected. I have a 12 Ridgeline and a 01 Jeep grand cherokee limited that are better over-all. The Jeep takes the prize even without any TC or DSC. The Quadra Drive is the gold standard so far. The Ridgeline is actually very good after some complaints about how intrusive the programming was on the earlier models. My 08 would chop the power completely if I put the power down hard and refused to recognize I may be trying to get out into traffic and to let them churn a bit.
The Touaregs' weak spot would be on to off power transitions. When I come off the pedal while turning it doesn't transition from active diff management to firing the brakes to keep the turn going. I come off power and the front end washes out and understeers. My Honda gets a 10 there even though it is so nose heavy. It simply looks at wheel angle and doesn't care if you are on power or off. It sees you have right rudder ordered and if you come on or off power it just handles the problem by using the brakes to finish the job.
So still love it just a bit surprised about how average it is based on its heritage.
