Windshield chips

1916 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  tregger
I have had my 16 Treg since about October. It seems every time i take a road trip on the interstate I catch a rock to the wind shield. I have on big chip that i had repaired and got another one last week.

Is this a common problem with the design of the vehicle? Has anyone added a deflector to the hood to prevent this? Thanks

If you live in Colorado ---- get windshield insurance.
X2. Sometimes you can get glass breakage insurance for peanuts when you already have comprehensive.

As mentioned above, in Colorado it is a must-have!
If you live anywhere there is snow get windshield insurance. In fact get it no matter where you drive, these windshields are expensive. I broke one on HWY 10 in Fl from a truck throwing up a stone.
Something I have noticed (or maybe a coincidence) is that attaching devices to the windshield seems to make the glass more prone to chip/crack than a open windshield. I have yet to replace a windshield since I have removed the phone and gps from the glass. Also I always use dealer windshields as they seem to be a much higher quality then the aftermarket.

Had mine changed recently thanks to a truck kicking up a rock in front of me. Be sure to go OEM. The insurance co. won't mention it but they'll preferentially choose an aftermarket. IIRC, the OEM was about $700-800 to be replaced. If you have the rain sensor, a special gasket adhesive is needed for the area behind the rear view mirror as well +$$.
Semitic and Pilkington are the two OEM manufacturers for VW/Audi. If you need a windshield replacement and your glass shop has glass made by either of those two...... you are good to go.

The difference is one simply doesn't have the OEM logo in it.

I live in Colorado and have become an expert in windshields. Replaced five of them On my 2013 allroad and four on my 2006 Touareg.
Sekurit is the name ---- damn auto correct screwed up my previous post.

Ha! I wondered how the other version got onto the page!
I bet the original name is better...is likely more advanced and bulletproof.

Now that's funny!

Beware the Pilkington. Mine, supplied by Safelite, had an ugly brown tint and hundreds of bubbles that didn't show til I drove into the afternoon sun. I made them switch it for OEM and paid the $100 difference.
I have had a 2016 since 10/20/15. Already had the windshield replaced since I have insurance through State Farm for free replacement. Necessary here in AZ. Already new chip on replacement windshield.

On my 2012 it was like 2-3 years before it had a windshield replaced and after many trips too. It's probably just coincidence with my 2016, but I swear it chips looking at it.....lol
