Just curious as to how many people had to have thier engine pulled or had to have the cable replaced. The extended contract people say they will not cover the cost of the repair if the cable is just loose or its corroded which you can't find out until the engine is out. Seeing this seems to be a known issue I'd like to start a list of people who already had this done and covered by warranty or contract in case I need to get lawyers involved. The dealer now says its 40 hours of labor to pull the engine and replace the cable. $4000 for a repair is crazy for a known issue.

I had that problem in my 2003 V8.
It had just passed the intial 3 year warranty - and luckily I had taken out the 2 year extension.

The car was off the road for 2 weeks - as they had to fly the part in to Adelaide from Singapore.

Warranty pays for a hire car while your car is off the road - but this is capped at $300 - which will get you a rollerskate for 14 days.

I did write to VW Australia - and they eventually agreed to meet the cost of car hire for the period - I had pointed out that this was a failure of supply chain logistics, that I was being punished for.

So I swapped my VW for a rent-a-bomb for two weeks.

Problem has not returned.

I had the alternator cable replaced. I have an 04 VIN in the 28k range. I am now back in the shop for the third time in 5 months with a dead car though, see the other thread related to claimed dead battery, steering column replacement, etc.

Labor I believe was 8 or 12 hours. I seem to recall another consideration was that the car had to be off for 12 hours prior to starting the job because the catalytic converter gets VERY hot (>1000°F) and the technicians won't work near something that hot until it cools.

I had the cable replace on my 04 V8. Vin is early ~8500. They did not need to pull the motor to do it. The TSB for this repair only applied to V8s. I attached the TSB. I'm sure it would be much harder with the V10 in the way and may require dropping it.

Once the cable was replace (couple of years ago) it has been rock solid ever since.
