Hello,

I am young and new at car maintenance and just got a 09' Touareg 3.0L tdi. The oil hasn't been changed for about 20k miles from what I see in the maintenance book, so I was going to change the oil and the filter. I planned on following this guide to do the change (I have a mityvac to extract it from the top) but the issue is that I can't seem to find the recommended oil anywhere. From what I can tell, I need some VW 507.00 oil but I don't know what brands are reliable/cheapish or where to find them. I just replaced a cornering light and am getting the glow plugs replaced under warranty. The only other thing going on with it is the front brakes (the whole thing not just the pads) are super janky from rust so those might need to be replaced too. Other than that it should be good to go but I'm just trying to sort this out especially since I'm new to car ownership. Thanks!
 
Go for a quality brand and stay with the same brand if you plan on hanging on to it.

Castrol ? Nulon ? Penrite ?.......... Start searching...... Also have in the back of your mind a reasonable amout of outlay per out of pocket for eahc change. You wouldnt want to choose top shelf ($$) wise and fork out more than you need to.

Should be plenty here on the forum re oils

Change oil at minimum per service shcedule. If you do it more often you are being kind on her becuase its a diesel and contaminates quickly

VW just changed from Castrol to Mobile 1. Both are really good, especially the synthetics. I've been going to the VW dealership to buy my oil and filters for my mk5/6 Golfs because their oil is cheaper than anything decent I can buy at a local parts store and they sell me the correct amount and filter. Parts stores keep selling me incorrect filters for some reason. And VW-spec brake fluid and coolant is hard to find anywhere else usually. Maybe it's just where I live that it's a good deal at the dealership.

Good point on the oil filter.

It might cost a little extra but you get the correct, quality filter for the car.

Brake rotors inevitably get rusty.

They aren't cheap so, unless there is a performance problem, save your money until the brake pad wear light comes on.

And in the meantime take time to read up the numerous brake threads on here so you know what to do when the light pops on.
 
For our 3.0L tdi both the dealer and we use Mobil 1 ESP
Would not recommend extraction method for first change, especially as you do not know how long it has been. Actually easy to reach and drain from the oil pan. Would use extraction only every other oil change.
ESP is supposed to stand for Exhaust System Protection actually means Extra Special Price
Agree with what was said above, engine oil can be cheaper at the dealer.
 
This is what the independent dealer that I bought my 2010 v6 TDI from said to use. He said they sell it on amazon. Haven’t looking into it yet though, as I don’t plan on changing my own oil.

If you delete your DPF you are free to run Mobil Delvac or Shell Rotella if you'd like.. but 507 spec oil is still fine.

I'm not a huge fan of M1, now that Castrol LL03 has been discontinued I'll be switching to either Pentosin or Rowe 507.. nice german oil used for factory fills for german built vehicles..

I don't believe that Nulon (which I use exclusively) is available outside of Australia. Correct me if I'm wrong
