Wheel bearings

My 2003 R5 TDi has had an annoying humming noise for a several hundred miles. I was sure it was coming from the rear tyres, got the rear tyres replaced today and humming noise is still there:(

I now think its more than likely to be a rear wheel bearing.

Any body know roughly how much these cost to repair?

Was thinking of changing a slightly newer Touareg, but may end up keeping this one if its an expensive fix!

the bearings are around $100, a little more if from vw. All data says flat rate on it is 2.1 hrs so you should figure that + an alignment if someone is doing it. I did one of my fronts myself this summer, It wasn't that bad, you do need a press though and need to be knowledgeable about using it so you don't ruin the bearing putting it in. Also I didn't do an alignment, even though it is recommended, and I haven't noticed any pulling or tire wear from it but vw recommends it done after removing the wheel bearing housing.

I'm concerned about your tyre change.

What's on the front?

How worn are they?

What have you put on the back?

Have you inspected the centre bearing on your prop shaft?

The tyres are Nexen Roadian's (all four). The front were replaced about 4000 miles ago, and rear two days ago.

The propshaft was replaced by the main dealers about two years ago, so I'd guess it is not that!

Good! I was worried you may have mixed and matched tyres - 4 all the same make, model, tread and size ticks that box!

And you have a recent new prop so that box is also ticked.

Have you tried posting on the UK site too?

Its taken a while to get to the bottom of this problem, but here's an update (just for the record).

The VW main deals had my car for two days, and said that the wheel bearings were fine. The noise was coming from the tyres. I figured that as I'd already recently replaced the rear tyres, I only needed to replace the front tyres. Four new tyres later and the noise is still there.

Back to main dealers. Two days later, they inform me that the tyres and wheel bearings are fine. The noise is coming from the drive train area, they suspect that it needs a new gearbox but would need to take the gearbox off to check it out. Costs could spiral, so I instructed them not too do this.

End result: Time to trade my treg in for a newer one.
