I hope it's OK to refer to a listing from eBay. There are two 2012 TDIs listed and this one is very similar to the other. In looking at the pics of the interior, something is amiss right behind the gearshift. It seems there is a power outlet and then a galvanized steel mount for something that is missing. Can anyone explain? I was looking as a possible car for our son. 2012 Volkswagen Touareg 4dr TDI Lux | eBay

Otherwise, both of these look pretty nice; they're TDIs so have some warranty left, but I couldn't bear looking at that weird opening all the time. TIA.

I'm guessing some sort of release, or level control for a sub/amp.
I live about 45 minutes away, I might be able to put an eyeball on them for you, poke around, take more pics.

Are you talking about the area circled in red?

Yes. I see in your pic that the cover is flipped up to show the power outlet and storage area. That is probably also true in the other pics, but it wasn't so obvious. Many thanks!

Believe it or not it's actually an ashtray/cigarette lighter area. Some have said the metal hole on the left is for holding a lit cigarette.
