Hi all, we will be in the Market soon to buy an suv to pull our Caravan, we have Narrowed it Down to a touareg, but not sure what to get....our budget Maybe up to 40k. Would like a V10, but the power of v6 diesel seems impressive to. Our van will weigh 3.2 ton loaded, any thoughts as to model and things we need to look out for when buying a second hand tourareg.
Cheers

Good choice going with a Touareg! Welcome to Clubtouareg. Every Touareg model is equipped to tow 7,770 pounds, however the TDI's are a much better choice for towing due to much better torque and better mpg. If you can find a V10 for a decent price, then go for it! Keep in mind though: there are several things that need to be replaced throughout the life of the V10, and if they have not been previously replaced, it can be pretty costly to do it yourself. If I were you, I would find a well-priced V6 TDI. The engine can handle towing nearly anything without breaking a sweat, and it gets pretty good mileage too. To each his own though. Again, welcome to Clubtouareg!
from what I understand maintenance on v10 is very difficult and costly. Read up on it. In my opinion TDI is way to go.

Hi Devilsadvocate,

We tow our 23'6" Crusader Manhattan with the 3.0lt TDI V6. Does it with ease. Cruising speed of about 90 - 95km/h returns avge of 14.5lt/100km. Vehicle loves the work, and I find I have to kill the cruise control when approaching hills to give the plebs behind me half a chance to over take us.

The 7L series has a 3500kg towing capacity and 350kg max ball weight (ex factory). A more capable, comfortable, better equipped towing vehicle would be hard to find.

You will find many posts about extended warranties. Some great reading. It takes some of the pressure and worry away. The vehicle needs to pass inspection before they give you a warranty.

We bought ours used and we did have some initial problems BUT they were covered!

I spent some time and money bring our Touareg up to standard with maintenance schedule. Keep that in mind too. We have sweet running machine and enjoy every minute pulling our RV.

Welcome aboard!
yes i have heard they are hard to work on, but VW mechanic has told me they are a strong unit
I was thinking along those lines, but would love the feel of 10 pots under me......

As i am still very green with the mechanics of the touraregs..trying to find out the difference between 4 motion and non 4 motion? do all the touraregs have air active suspension? do they all have dual range transmissions, seems the later ones dont ?

All touaregs come standard with 4Motion, but current US models are no longer offered with 4XMotion. The difference is that the 7L series or 2002-2010 touaregs had low range and locking center differential as standard, with the options of a locking rear differential and the adaptive air suspension. Air suspension is standard on V10 models and optional on all others. The 2011+ or 7P series no longer offers low range, locking differentials, or the adaptive air suspension, at least for the US.
All the 7P series offers is a "off road" mode which allows more wheel slip, holds revs for longer, and activated hill descent assist.

However, depending on where you live, there is an optional "terrain tech" package that brings back all the features from the 7L series on newer models.

This is really I interesting, I did not know this. How can you tell if a Touareg has this option? Like interior switches etc?

Does anyone have any experiences?

He's in Australia, so the 7P is available with 4XMotion still.

Be careful with ball weight, its been reduced from 350 to 280 in the latest 7P model.
