What other VWs have you Touareg drivers owned?

I looked for a thread on this, but came up empty with a few different searches, so I'm adding this post, expecting it's not the first of its kind.

I'm a recent Touareg owner (my first SUV), but bought my first VW in 1987...a 1978 Scirocco (1.6l FI, 4-speed). Since then, I've had a lot of VAG cars, including:
  • '79 Scirocco 5-speed (Brasilbraun, pictured)
  • '86 Mk II GTI (8v)
  • '92 Passat wagon (16v)
  • '98 and '08 Wolfsburg Ed. Jettas (including 2.0T with DSG)
  • '16 Mk VII Golf R (Lapiz Blau, picured)
  • '01 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro
There are a few others, but those are the highlights.

I'm really curious to know what the favorite VWs were of members here.

All previous vag are in my signature:

1997 Jetta TDI 5spd pp520 nozzles/custom turbo, 1997 GTI VR6, fully built motor/suspension/transmission/brakes, 1998 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro 5spd, 1999.5 Jetta TDI fully built motor/suspension/brakes/trans, 2001 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro 5spd, 2012 Tiguan SE 2.0TSI 3" catless downpipe, 2012 Touareg Luxury 3.0 TDI v6 - little this, little that.

They were all great cars for different reasons, but the one I miss the most and regret the most was my modded vr6 GTI. Great handling, great exhaust, great engine, great interior.

Edit: Touareg is my overall number 1 favorite for doing everything, very well.

Do you recall what rpms the GTI was spinning at 60mph? Currently have 1995 mk3 Golf 1.6L that i love to beat around in but long trips are not fun as at 100km/h it revs at 2600. These cars really needed a 6th gear or longer 5th. For fwd it actually handles well. Torque steer not an issue because what torque? The AEA/AEE engines make around 75hp.

My 2014 Touareg R-Line VR6 with 42,000 miles on it was the first VW I bought - a few years ago. Love it - perfect size for me - plenty fast - nice handling for its size - super stable on the highway. The only thing I don't like is the premium fuel requirement - close to an extra $26 each time you fill up from empty. I almost bought a 1983 Jetta back in 1983 but I ended up buying new 1983 BMW 320i. Loved that car. My step-daughter bought a totally loaded 2000 Jetta and that thing would not wear out - she put around 250,000 care-free miles on it and it impressed me that the doors still shut like a bank vault - a factor in my used Touareg purchase. She sold the Jetta last year to her best friend's newly licensed 16-year-old son - we'll see if he can kill the thing but - so far - it's still going strong.

I had owned Audis since 1996 and moved to VW in 2005 as I wanted a TDI- and that wasn't available in Audi cars here.

So I bought a 2000 Golf TDI. Did a lot of work to it. LOVED it. It was hit and totaled by a kid with bad tires after several years of ownership. Then a 2005 Passat TDI wagon. Loved the Golf, but figured a bit bigger would be better. Hit and totaled by a 16 year old girl. :( Drove across the US for a 2004 PassatTDI sedan that was modified for a manual transmission. Great fuel mileage, kept having turbo issues.

Then I started looking to the Touaregs. Wanted the large safety factor and not having to worry about bad winter roads. The perfect vehicle. Have 2 of them now.

Hmmm, I’ll bite.

in order:

75 Scirocco
85 Jetta GLi
90 Audi 90
2005 Touareg V8
2005 Touareg V8 (VW replaced first one)
2002 A4 Avant
2013 Touareg TDI Exec
2010 Passat Wagon
2016 Touareg TDI Exec (current)
2016 A6 Prestige (current)
1973 VW Karmann Ghia convertible (current)

Crazy to think about, but that’s over a 40 yr span.

Learned to drive in a 68 beetle and a 71 bus.

My kids drive a 2012 Tiguan SE and s 2018 Q5

nuts!

Well over 40 VW/Audis, so I’ll just cherry pick a few favourites. Not in any order.
  • 1981 Rabbit S one owner which I swapped in a 16vG60 (still have)
  • 1991 Passat wagon that I swapped in a TT225 1.8T, then syncro AWD swapped it to handle the 300hp.
  • 2000 Jetta GLX 5MT my first VW! Got when I was 17, converted it to OEM plus Eurospec
  • 2004 Audi S4 6MT
  • 1989 Audi 200 Turbo quattro 5MT. Tank of a car, had super awesome cluster with lots of gauges, and the rear defogger spelled quattro.
  • 2004 Audi allroad 2.7TT 6MT
  • 2001 Audi A6 2.7TT 6MT stage 3
  • 2006 Touareg V8 full load
  • 2004 Touareg V10 TDI one owner
  • 2015 Touareg TDI OEM plus with lots of mods (still have)
  • 2001 Volvo V70R Saffron Gold
  • 1995 Saab 9000 Aero 5MT probably the coolest looking car I’ve ever owned.
  • 2003 Saab 9-3 Viggen 5MT liftback a real head turner.
  • 1992 GTI 24v VR6 (still have)
  • 2016 Golf R 6MT (sorely missed)
  • 1993 Audi urS4 5MT Canadian special. Another tank of a car, super comfy, neat gauge package, tons of power with a tune a wastegaste spring. Lockable rear diff, unstoppable in the snow.
  • 1990 Cabrio 5MT special edition with Recaro interior. One owner
  • 1988 Cabrio 5MT with built ABA swap
  • 1996 Cabrio 5MT with VR6 swap
  • 2003 Jetta TDI 5MT stage 4 everything. Absolutely hilarious to drive, still achieved over 45mpg

I’m hoping to add either a Phaeton W12 or V10 TDI, or Audi A8L W12 to the list within a year.

  • 08 MK5 Jetta SEL, Salsa Red. One of the best cars I’ve owned.
  • 11 MK6 Jetta, Toffee Brown. Definitely the worst car I’ve owned.
  • 12 MK6 GTI, Shadow Blue. My first manual, 2-door, and a great car besides the water pump, clutch, and timing chain failures before 50K miles.
  • 15 MK7 GTI, Carbon Steel Grey. Also manual, and a 2-door.
  • 15 MK7 GTI, Night Blue Metallic. DSG.
  • 19 MK7.5 Alltrack, Great Falls Green. 6MT. Favorite car I’ve owned - besides the manual. I don’t care for a manual on a DD anymore. Sold this car for 7K more than I paid for it new on Tuesday with 10K in equity built, so over 15K back in my pocket. Basically the same deal as a TDI buyback.

I am not a Touareg owner yet but will be keeping my eyes peeled in the coming months to scoop one in April. Let me know if any of you want to sell your T4 TDI in April😁

Mk6 sportwagen. Liked the 2.5L and car dynamics, but I was missing AWD in Canadian winters. I mean, it is doable without but so much fun with AWD!!

I was all set (even road tested a few) to get a golf Alltrack, and did a camping trip with the 3 kids only to realize the extra space would be nice. So got my 2014 TDI instead. I intend to keep it for a while, but I really don't know what I will/would get next. I really love the ride/feel/finish. Atlas is out because of it's size, Tiguan because of the powertrain; maybe a Volvo V90 or XC90 or something like that.
I prefer the driving dynamics of a car over a SUV, but the Touareg with Eibach springs and Bilstein B6 damper is not too bad.

1st gen Passat Wagon when they came to the USA (1991?).

Worse piece of crap I ever owned. Turned me off VW until I picked up the Touareg in 2014.

Until the other day, my son (well, us) owned a '06 Jetta 2.5 for 3 years. Wasn't happy with that either as it had some weird electrical issues that were $$$ to fix (we worked around them though) and the radiator fan assembly had to be replaced twice, but it otherwise got him around.

Early 2000s Volkswagen definitely still had strange quirks. In fact, most still do lol

In my experience & conversations with owners, the general consensus is that Mk IV Jetta/Golf were the low point. I've owned Mk II, III and V long-term without any challenges...a brief encounter with a Mk IV Jetta TDI was inconclusive, but my father-in-law has been diriving a fully loaded Mk IV Jetta wagon for years without issue.

What other VWs have you Touareg drivers owned?
I bought a new 2001 (or was it 2002) Passat new. Drove it for 170k or so miles then traded it in. The check engine light was on for the last 60k or more miles. I would clear out the code in the inspection line, have it pass inspection, then have the light come back on a few days later. I don't even remember how many times I had the CV joints replaced. Definitely a trouble spot on that car. It was a V6. V6 but 0 to 60 was in 9 or so seconds and got terrible gas mileage. It made no sense. But it was a pleasure to drive.

Purchased a used 2004 Passat Wagon with 40k or so miles in 2010 or so. It had an incomplete Carfax - and I paid for that. Lots of little issues over and over. I loved how it drove, but go sick of the repairs and traded it in.

I took a break from VWs until I just picked up my Touareg.

65 Bug - was in HS & it was my very 1st car. A friend of my brother had rolled it, seized the engine and it was sitting at a dealer in Michigan with a bill due for the replacement crate engine. He said pay the bill and it's yours...just throw Some money my way when you sell it. 1 crate engine parts and labor $253

65 VW 23 window Van Dlx - bought from a dealer after it blew and engine and got traded (sound familiar). I put a 1500N Porsche engine in it then left for Woodstock..never to return :)

fast forward...

05 T1 gasser bought as a work beater 4 years ago. Traded for...
09 TDi which is still in the fleet

6speed DSG 2008 GTI mk5 autobahn stage 1. Had 88k miles. Fully loaded, even had the thick rubber VW mats everywhere. Militek exhaust, H&R coil overs, APR tune. Car sounded, deep, subtle and beautiful. Would have loved a 6-speed manual but can’t have em all…

The car brought the biggest smile to my face in the longest time but the mechatronics unit was failing, it had a leak and some check engine lights came on. Cost was about $4000-5000 minimum for repairs. I had warranty but the dealer wouldn’t acknowledge the faults (of course). After 2 months of going back and forth I decided it wasn’t worth the headache of dealing with another VW or further problems and had it traded it for a different car $4000 off the sticker. It was a sour yet happy ending.

i think this is the only pic I have left

Just wanted to throw out a 🖐 from the South Shore!

My 1st VW was a hand-me-down 63 Beetle which my dad bought new in Germany and had shipped to California.
Next VW was a Westfalia camper with the pop up roof.
Next came my current VW Touareg 07 V8 FSI.
In over 40 years of driving, and owning many many vehicles, my Touareg is my all time favorite.

Thanks to all for these excellent contributions/replies!

I've seen a lot of overlap of specific models...GTIs/Rs...Jettas...A4s.
I'd have to say that the best long-term-owned cars I've had were a 2001 A4 2.8Q (I owned for 10 years), and 1986 Mk II GTI (owned for ~4 years).
The Golf R I owned was fantastic, but I only had it 2 years, and the vacancy it left brought me to the Touareg (the R made no sense for use at my family's rural retreat)...so both are classified as short-termers (at least so far).

Keep 'em coming!

Are we counting Audi's? LOL.

88 Scirocco 16v owner before me fully built the motor. Not sure what he did to it but it was the Fastest car i've ever owned
2013 Jetta SE bought new and it as my daily to go to NYC.
LOL Good point! I didn't see the fallacy of my own conceit.
In my view Audis of the past are VWs of the future...the interchangeability removes lots of the brand distinction for me. EG, my '14 Touareg has the same pano sunroof as my (former) '09 A4 Avant.

That Scirocco sounds fab. My '86 GTI had been modified by a prior owner for some sort of SCCA class...new cam, throttle body, header, cat-less exhaust, lower springs, stress bar... It was a monster; I often had it on 3 wheels around sharp curves, and a few times cracked the windshield due to the stiffness of the chassis translating all that strain up to the A pillar!
