I apologize if this has been asked before, in fact it probably has been but I just find so many different answers to the same question.

2004 Touareg 4.2 V8, 99,900 miles.

What weight of oil should I use? How much should I put in?

I change my own oil to avoid the cost at the stealership, and my mechanic takes all day to do a simple service.

Last time I changed my oil I used Mobil1 0w40 European Formula and a K&N oil filter. I put in about 9 quarts, until the level was up at full on the dip stick.

I'm about 2.5k into my 5k interval and the dip stick is dry...I know the engine is designed to use a little oil, but that seems like way too much oil consumption. I worry that maybe I used the wrong weight and it's too thin and just burning right through it, or maybe I didn't put enough.

Obviously I only want to use the highest quality motor oil to keep the engine in top form. So what do you guys recommend?

Thank you,
John

You're using the right oil. Your engine is just burning too much of it. If you stay on top of it and it's not leaking or billowing out the back on acceleration, I don't know that I would worry too much about it. Just check it at every fill up and add as needed.

Liqui Moly 0w-40 or Motul 5w-40, both are top notch oils. Also check your PCV valve, bad/clogged valve can lead to an excessive oil consumption. Lastly push your engine hard for a while which can also help you with excessive oil consumption.

I've been using Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 full synthetic oil for at least the past eight years. Any local Walmart would carry this oil. Get two 4q (@ $21 each) jugs plus one quart. The V8 takes 8.5q, you'll have 1/2q remaining to throw in later. I'm at 110K and the motor runs top . . .

This is Diesel oil that I believe is fine for the T1 V8 engine, correct? Its all about the viscosity grade?
