What makes VW 507 oil so necessary?

I can't help but to think, if our vehicles-3.0 TDI motors-are so special, so expensive and so exclusive, why do we need the magical VW 507 spec. oil? What is it in our motors that makes them so seemingly magical that they need this oil we can't just by at Vatozone, Advanced Auto, Walmart, etc. and have to pay about $10 a quart for?

Which one of these are you buying at your local auto store?

While I in no way suggested for anyone to change oil from what they get from the dealer at a fair price or feel comfortable with. Australian owners pay at least $25 a litre for 507.00 from our dealers. Or you can get 507.00 spec oil for $60 for 5L from a long term reputable Australian manufacturer . Can some one put context to the below questions from a Liquid Moly spec sheet attached.

You can get M1 ESP 5W-30 delivered for just over $9 a liter. Pretty decent deal and you don't have to drive anywhere.

Since there aren't many VW diesels on the road in the US, there isn't much reason to spend the money to gain the certification except for the two biggies (Mobil and Castrol) who sell worldwide.

I can find the Motul stuff at a couple local auto parts stores, but it's under the counter in a glass case like it's some kind of top-shelf scotch or something. I think it's like $12/liter. Never bought it because the Castrol LL03 is so cheap at the dealer.

Amsoil, Mobil, Motul, RedLine and Valvoline are sold in the UK VW / Volkswagen 507.00 5w30 Fully Synthetic Car Engine Oil as well as European and Middle East brands.

US versions may be different - but may also just be different certification, they may not have the ACEA grade required for Europe.

Customers can only go by the certification in their own market as differences can be subtle between markets, eg Synthetic Oil in Germany doesn't include the hydro-cracked quasi-synthetic that the rest of Europe and RoW call Fully Synthetic - it's a matter of legal systems and definitions.

I don't think I'll take that chance - I'll just get the Castrol from the dealer.

Well, now you're asking a different question. I was merely pointing out that VW says there is a long list of oils that meet their 507 00 spec. All of them 5W-30.

Your question seems to more "How do I know that a specific quart/liter of oil actually meets 507 00?" For me, I'd want to see the oil on VW's 507 00 list AND I'd want want to see "507 00" on the label of the container of oil.

BTW - At my last oil change at the VW dealer, they used oil with P/N G-052-195-1Q-DSP. I think this is Castrol Edge LL03 5W-30. On previous oil changes, the oil description was always something like "TDIOIL/CP 504/507 SPEC" or "TDIOIL 5W30 SYN LL03".

I regularly thrash the living daylights out of them yet they [all gassers bar one as in 3 SAABs, 3 Range Rovers, 3 BMWs, 1 Suzuki and 2 VWs] just don't burn oil!!

My T3 burns a little over 1 quart every 10,000 miles. It's a little irritating but suppose it's manageable.

Yeah, I guess that's true, but I would expect my dealer to be providing and using the correct oil. Had they given me something that *didn't* say "507 00" on the label but said it meets the criteria, I think I would call VAG-USA and get that in writing if they told me the same thing.

If that couldn't be verified or they wouldn't provide that in writing, I'd probably never go back to that dealer again.

I suspect that your VW dealer (and mine) have oils in stock, including 5W-30, that do NOT meet 507 00. I would not assume that the VW parts counter person knows that not all 5W-30 synthetic oils are created equal. That's why I said I would want to see "507 00" on the label . . . whether I got it at my VW dealer or I got it at my local auto parts or big box store.

On the few occasions I've gone to the dealer to pick up a liter of oil, I say "I need a bottle of that special magic VW-approved oil for TDIs". They've never handed me the wrong thing.

Different country, different brand - but a number of Hyundai dealers in the UK failed to use low SAPs ACEA-C3 oil on diesels when DPFs were introduced and it took a 2 year campaign on a Hyundai forum and many interventions from Hyundai UK to get their dealer network fully educated. I've heard of similar situations on a few other brands.

Of course, dealers buy oil in large drums not the small retail containers we all buy and wrongly tend to adopt the attitude of "one size fits all".

So you looked for, and saw, "507 00" on the label.
