Lease is up on my 2013 Lux and Ive got a solid offer on a new 2016 Lux. I have a combo lockbox in my trailer hitch that I use when I surf (2013 does not have fab keyless entry).

Can you disable it on the 2016? Turn on and off?

If not I'm forced to either only bring my valet key or hide my keys at the beach :-k. Locking them in the hitch would let anyone unlock the vehicle as the key would be too close to the vehicle.

The dealership said I could take the battery out but that sounds like a pain.

Appreciate any suggestions...

Have you asked the dealer if the feature can be turned off/on? Their 'pull the fob battery' solution is primitive.

AFAIK, there is no way to disable the vehicles KESSY system. Further, the fobs use both an active (via their internal battery) transmission and a passive transducer (not dependant on fob battery) to be recognized by the vehicle.
However, in some cases, a KESSY fob can be hidden in/on the Touareg, providing that the fob is completely RF shielded. The fob battery may be needed to be removed.

Would wrapping it in aluminum foil block the signal?

Possibly, but as others have done, you will have to experiment with your own particular arrangement.
