At 20,716 mileage check-up, my brake pads were measured 10mm Front and 8 mm Rear. About 2 month later the warning light Brake pads are weak appeared. At 25,808 mileage my front brake pads were measured 2 mm. I drive about 70 miles a day 95% of the time turnpike 5 days a week. I was advised to replace th ebrake pads and rotor ($970). Is this not unusual? This is a lease car also. Can I have them replaced through my own mechanic. Thank you for the advice

There are lots of threads on here on brakes - it will pay you to spend a bit of time looking through some of them to get the picture regarding the Touareg.

First, it seems strange that you've effectively worn your brakes out in 5,000 miles. If this really is the case then first I'd suspect an issue with the calipers sticking and not releasing fully [as long as you've not been riding the brakes!].

Secondly, the discs/rotors on Touaregs are unserviceable after just 1mm of wear on each side of the disc/rotor.

Some people do get two sets of pads to one set of discs/rotors but the norm is for Touareg brakes to last at least 60,000 miles [with some owners clocking up 100K and more!] so usually the discs/rotors are changed along with the pads and the brake wear sensors.

However, the first thing a competent mechanic should do is to inspect the discs/rotors for any cracks and grooves and also measure the remaining thickness of the discs/rotors to ascertain whether or not they will take another set of pads.

Brakes aren't rocket science so do get a second opinion - and quote - if you have a trusted mechanic you can discuss this with.

Note that dealers will often try to get you to renew all four corners at the same time. Whilst this may be the best practice in the workshop, it's not the best practice for your bank account!

The OEM discs/rotors are Brembo and the pads are Pagid if you want to stick with original suppliers.

On the T3 the OEM pad is stamped Nisshimbo which owns TMD which in turn owns Textar, Mintex and Pagid

I know from personal experience if you buy Pagid pads for the T3 they are no where to close the formulation of the OEM Nisshimbo pads that are put on the car at the factory or purchased through VW parts department.

Really strange to needs new pads after 25K, our 11 Touareg VR6 went a little over 100K before brake pad warning light came on.

51k so far on my 2014 Treg. Hoping I get to 75k on OEM. I think they were 6mm last oil change. My dealer wants 900 per axle, not happening.

I just got 27k km (16.7k miles) on Brembo pads on Brembo discs before warning today. Changed all pads/discs at the same time. Looks like the rears are lowest.

Can I check which corner triggered the warning somehow? T3, 2011 It's soon time to change to summer tires, don't want to take the off now just to check what set to buy.

I am forced to use the brakes a lot in my daily commute.

Hi Turbo,

Any thoughts on why ACC may be contributing to early brake wear?
The system will apply brakes to make the necessary adjustments. I don't have it on mine so I can't recall for sure if your system also pulses the brakes to scrub and dry the pads/disks when it's raining like some other manufacturers do.

Who did the brake pad measuring? I bet that they weren’t actually measured the first time but only estimated. Or vice versa.
