V8 Exhaust Noise upon Heavy Acceleration

Wondering if any other V8 owners out there have heard this noise. With your window rolled down (to hear better) and upon heavy acceleration - floor it - at about the time the tranny would shift into 2nd gear I hear a rattleing noise coming from the exhaust system. Sounds like a quarter rattling around inside of a tin can. It lasts until I back off of the accelerator.

Here's the kicker -

I just had it in for my 5,000 service and asked them to look into it. 2 weeks later - that's right 2 weeks - the dealer was stumped with the noise, so they called in the VW Service Head for my area. He simply stated that what I was hearing was "normal" exhaust noise for a V8.

Thinking that they were trying to pull a fast one, I asked to test drive a brand new T-Reg to compare and TO MY SUPRISE it sounded the exact same. Now, I realize that it may be "normal" from VW meaning that they all are doing it but it surely does not sound "normal".

Anyone else hear this noise???

This noise has been discussed here or on Vortex in the past. VW made a change to the V8 exhaust system sometime early this year which made it more noisy. Not sure if this is due to customers complaining about not enough noise or what?
Yes - this is normal (I've heard it in about 3 other V8s and spoke to a trusted dealer about it) - seems to be the way the exhaust is tuned and when it hits the high-end, the "throaty" quality is limited to a clicking - freaked me out too when I first heard it.
There are two systems for the V8. The old system had a large resonator under mid vehicle. See attachment
This was done away with about Jan 2004 builds. They call this a "Sport exhaust" Possibly just another little deletion (read cost saving) for VW.

I'm the first to admit I am anal. Is this something I have to live with or is it something that can be fixed?

The Sales Manager suggested an after market exhaust tip - which I quickly cringed at, but?
After 2000 miles mine started to sound tinny on hard acceleration. Dealer changed out muffler box and tips and it sounded better than ever, and I would swear that it had better throttle response.
quarter sound

thats not a quarter sound, it a deusch mark!!!
I was told by my dealer in Nj that the noise is normal on the V8's only.
Supposedly there is an inverter valve that releases the extra air, that is what is making the noise.

Amazing. This doesn't show up in the parts list. I think it is related to the dreaded muffler bearing.
exhaust

I have the same problem and its killing me, i just got the car and this noise......

It also seems really funny that when i'm in neutral the car has problems getting to high rpms when i rev it like almost backfire problems?

anyone else with this

any fixes?
Tried to duplicate the original poster's noise. My V8 Treg does not have any unusual noise at high RPMS. Tried holding high RPM, and normal Tiptronic shifting through the gears. No strange noises.
Muffler Noise

To respond to your problem I had them change out my complete muffler box and tips, which made a huge difference in the sound and performance of my vehicle. This is the last post I will make on this website since I have no one address any of my problems or crys for help. I feel like this website is only welcome to problems that the majority have and not the minority. Several times I have attempted to ask for help for posting pictures and requests for information with no response.

Exhaust Noise

I have also had this same problem. The only time the noise is really bad is after the truck has sat for a while. The first 3 times I took it to the dealer they couldn't even hear the noise? (Idiots) The best way I would describe this noise is how when you were a kid and put a playing card on the wheel of your bike to make that fluttering sound. I have had multiple people ask me what's wrong with my Touareg because of the sound it would make as I would accelerate quikly. Finally the dealership let me drive another V-8 and it too made the same awful sound. The dealership told me it was do to the "High output Exhaust." Either way this truck is to expensive to hear such a horrible sound when accelerating quickly. The worst part is my brother has a Porsche Cayenne and his sounds great all the time. I told the dealership they should replace the Exhaust not only because it bothers me but because it's bad publicity when everyone turns their head to see what's making that horrible sound!

hey guys...mine does it too...its just the baffels or however u spell it ..opening up for more air flow from what i hear....my friends benz does it to .....the kompressor engine but its super charged but thats umm ya thats what i think it is
I really hate how VW can say that a annoying noise is normal in a $50,000 SUV. I am currently have a loud humming noise @ 70 m/h and they say its coming from the transfer case and its "NORMAL". Therefore there's nothing wrong with it. This is far from exceptable.
I have now shown the dealer the sound coming from the exterior of the TReg during heavy excel in first. They have admitted to hearing it and now are in the prosses of trying to figure out what it is. I actually heard the lead mechanic say the this noise is NOT normal in all TRegs so hopefully something will come of this issue.
i have the same problem....what dealership and where did you go...cuz i need my tech to call your tech so they understand what is wrong with mine...they don't believe there is anythign wrong
To me this is indeed no problem.
Have you ever listened to other high performance engines, let's say from Porsche etc.? Sounds just the same to me.
A different thing that is with the noise around 3000 rpm this is indeed annoying to me, but this is not subject of this thread I think.
850....if you heard my car you would understand...but you can't until then...something is definitiely wrong
