About two months ago I purchased a V6 (2005 240hp) and was surprised by the lack of acceleration and overall performance. I was confident that that upping the hp 20 for 2005 would make a difference but I was wrong. I thought there might be a problem with it and visited the dealer twice and spent a lot of time talking to other Touareg owners. After giving it time to adapt and break in a little improvement was noted but still very dissappointing. It would downshift to 5th when I was driving on the freeway up a slight overpass for petes sake. After 10 weeks I could take it no longer.

I am now into a V8 and all I can say is wow! The performance difference is, quite honestly, almost unbelievable. More nimble, much better throttle and speed control (the 8 uses the engine to accelerate not the downshifting of the tranny like in the 6). Over the years I have noticed that the selection of drivetrain platforms on new vehicles provide for different levels of performance and these are generally noticeable but gradual. In this case the difference is so drastic that I wonder if there should not be another alternative between the 8 and 6. Either that or the 6 (both hp and torque) should be increased to fill the chasm between the two.

Having said this, if performance is not something you care about I am sure the 6 would work for you. But, even when I compare it to my wife's van and a buddy's 4 cyl accord, it was a dissappointing machine.

It's pushing 2.5 tons of machine. I earlier had an X5 3.0i and performance was lacking when I had 5 adults in the car. Made up my mind then to look at nothing less than a V8. Am satisfied with my V8.

I'd love to see an honest to goodness side by side comparison performance wise of 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile etc... of the v6, v8, and v10.

I have a v8 in the chicago area if anyone is interested.. :)
Here is part of what you are looking for:
from VW on the 05's
Performance 0-60 mph Top Speed
V6 9.4 seconds 122 mph
V8 7.6 seconds 130 mph
V10 TDI 7.5 seconds 130 mph

This is from the VW website: http://www.vw.com/touareg/specifications_us.htm

I hope you find this helpful.

Hey thanks!... that means if I take out the spare I can take a v10 as long as we're not pulling 50' conifers around...

:)

That's a darn impressive oil burner then...not that I didn't believe everyone singing its praises, fourwheeler giving it its award etc...but they said something to the effect that it had seemingly shed its weight - unless they were talking about a v6 I don't know what they noticed as a difference..

There's a large experiencial difference between the v10 and the v8. VW underrates the v10 in their performance figures. Several reputable track tests have run 0-60 mph nearly a full second quicker than advertised.

We find the acceleration for our 05 V6 just fine for what it is, especially in sport mode, this is not a stop light challenger for us. The only problem is if we lean into the go pedal the gas gauge hits back hard...very hard.

Yep, V6 works fine here, too. Is it going to win any races off the line? No. Have I tried to race anyone off the line within the past 10 years? No.

If I need to pass someone in highway traffic, I just drop it down a gear or two and it's does the job!

Please don't mistake my tone as ripping on the 6's - I was a very committed v6 buyer until I found a lightly used v8 affordable with the options I wanted. I gave up air and rear diff to be able to afford it.

My intentions weren't to suggest any inter-treg rivalry, I was just curious what fourwheeler was talking about - I haven't driven a v10 so my opinion is entirely 2nd hand when it comes to comparisons with the v10.

I will try to get a direct quote from my fourwheeler magazine, but I was suprised to hear them suggest the v8 was slow - not sure what type of vehicles they're used to driving.

I hear ya, BigScout. It does get a bit frustrating for us 6ers, sometimes. To compare the 6 to the 8 is like comparing the 8 to the 10. Just because one performs better or has more muscle doesn't mean the guy in the smaller engine is a loser.

Should all the 10s come on here and tell the V8s how much they suck?

If money were no object, I'm sure we'd all get V10s, but some of us had to save pennies just to get the 6.

For me it was a choice of options or performance. My personal choice was a loaded 6. It doesn't have the muscle of an 8 or 10, but it suits me fine.

The bottom line is this - #1 As long as the problems are kept to a minumum, it's an awesome vehicle with any engine, and #2 I clearly need to get a life!

I have to apologize if my comparison of my ownership experience of the two vehicles has offended anyone. This was not my intent.

It just seemed to me that there was much talk and inquiry from prospective buyers about the differences between the two and little practical real life commentary. Since I had experienced both engine platforms for long durations of time, I though it might be interesting reading. I too looked for clean comparisons when I decided on the 6 and could find nothing but conjecture. I thought this might be helpful to those making the comparison.

6 owners are not loosers and I agree the vehicle is great with any engine.

Again, many apologies if some were offended.

Again, my apologies

All Touareg owners are winners in my book.

It's an amazing truck, no matter what engine powers it.

Hey, no worries...

I probably put WAY too much thought into such things.

My problem is I've recently got this awesome truck that I love and I logon to this site and Vortex to pick up useful tips, thoughts, etc. just like everyone else.

Unfortunately, sometimes posts can bring you down pretty quick, usually from some poor SOB having buttloads of problems with his Treg...then I logoff thinking "maybe I made a bad choice." But I remind myself of one thing - this truck is fun to drive - period.

Maybe some day soon I'll be one of those poor SOBs worrying about TSBs and VWoA and all of the other acronyms. But in the meantime, I'm loving life with my Treg!

(Maybe a little too much, heh?)

Keep in mind there's more of us happy with the truck than unhappy. This is inmind still an enthusiasts forum more than a complaint dept.

I love the treg - I think its always a good choice.. :) Feel good about your purchase in my opinion - I went through the same thing and do anytime anything "funny" happens - like my recent fuel pump issue. But VW paid a month of the car and I had a loaner for a week and half - it doesn't get much better than that at any dealer - and they fixed the problem to boot!

Take care,

After a 1500 mile trip in a brand new TReg I found myself smiling at this comparison. Coming from a V8 Ford Expedition with a limiting tranny the V6 TReg is not underpowered in that comparison. Compared to the V8 TReg-maybe, it all depends on your point of view. Having driven an
Audi S4 then it is underpowered, coming from almost any peformance vehicle then it is. Coming down in size and cylinders from other vehicles then its not.

The tiptronic transmission allows one to make the most out of the V6. It was an interesting experience on the trip down and then back. Going down I used
cruise control (well after break in period) in D an allowed the engine to determine shift points. The transmission did indeed downshift to 5th at times I did not think it needed to and it did give me pause. Coming back home I put in "tip" mode leaving it in 6th and on cruise. The engine never missed a beat and pulled those same hills in 6th without any problem.

Finally, according to MFI I averaged almost 19.4 MPG on a new engine with speed set at 75 MPH. Coming back I averaged 18.5 MPG with speed set around 80 MPH+. Before encountering stopped traffic the MFI indicated 18.6 MPG with an average speed at 72 MPH. This would have been over the previous 300 miles. The best the Expy would have done is 16.8 MPG at probably an average speed ov 72 MPH. Thats an improvement in speed and fuel consumption at the same time. Not too mention driving dynamics alone.

To me the V6 is fine. Enjoy your TReg whatever the engine and option choice, its an incredible vehicle as most of us owners know.

I reckon jtb for those v6 owners. For the past weeks I have been thinking that perhaps my choice of a 2005 V6 was not adequate for its slight underpower performance. And I had been thinking about trading it in for a fully-loaded V8. But after I had passed my 600-mile milestone, 1st break-in period, I full-throttled my Treg on the highway (with hills), I found the power was quite adequate especially with the help of Tiptronic. You could easily pass cars going uphill with a tiptronic downshift to gear 5 at 75+ MPH if 'D' does not do it automatically for you. 'S' mode seemed to do what it supposed to do, locking you at gear 5 at that speed. Though the engine does not roam like an V8, and the acceleration certainly is no where near that of a V8, this vehicle is nothing short of power and speed.

Now, I have windrawn my consideration of the trade-in and am happy with my V6! So should all the V6 owners!!
