Has anyone had an issue with the automatic transmission on a 3.2 petrol upshifting ( In Drive ) seams like to early, driving normally it will run through the gears quickly and will make the engine labour, I have to depress the Gas pedal get it to change down... In sport mode no issues apart from this is only any good in town as the top gear never kicks in, and engine will rev far to high....

You can also try resetting the transmissions adaptive system.

1. With your foot off the brakes.
2. Turn the key to the on position.
3. Press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor (Past the kickdown).
4. Hold for at least 30 seconds.
5. Release the accelerator pedal.
6. Turn the key off.

The adative system has been reset to "relearn" mode and will automatically adjust to your own driving style/habits.

Good Luck!

Where did you find this reset procedure? Was it in a factory repair manual?

Bentley has it. The procedure was frequently used on the Passat due to the same symptoms, irregular shift points, etc., The Bentley Publishers Technical Forum has a reset procedure discussion for a number of VW models.

I couldn't find any reference to this procedure in the factory manuals. There was a similar procedure used on the older mechanical throttle body equipped vehicles to set the kick down point but nothing on the drive by wire systems. I can't see how this procedure would reset the adaption protocols.

I also questioned the procedure a year or so ago. I was experiencing the Stepper Motor binding - being out of warranty, I held off on fixing it. A VW mechanic from a dealership here in MD suggested the step down procedure. Nothing to loose, I tried it and the binding ceased...of course it came back once the front tires started to slip specially on oddball surfaces. Everytime it happened, I initiated the step down and lo and behold, the binding stopped.

Late last year, I found a dismantler in PA that had a Touareg and I was able to purchase the Stepper of it. Less than 50K on the truck and it had the latest revision. Installed it and everything is well.

If you check Vortex, you will see a few folks doing the step down (specially Passats and A4 Audi's) and it has worked for them. For me, there is nothing to loose but everything to gain by trying it.

First you should use VAGcom to check, record and then clear codes.

Then do the reset.

Then drive the car.

Then check for any VAGcom codes again.
