Tregers,
I really need your advise on this weird issue.
2004 Treg V10 Tdi, I bought it as a fixer upper. Main issue, when the car reaches the 4th gear, the engine only revs up, does not change gears to 5th,6th, not even on sports or manual mode.
I want to try every possible fix before the ultimate of replacing the transmission. (which is not surprise to me as I bought the car with issues)
Please share any possible fixes you might know. I did try the reset by turning the key on, stepping on the fuel pedal.
Secondly,

in the V10, is it possible to replace the transmission without dropping the engine? What are your experiences with such issues? What was the fix if your had this very same issue?
Thank you for any input.

I'd start with address 02
I'd do a fluid and filter change right off the batt, blow alway the codes, and see how fast and how many of them return, then go further.
Dig out the transmission SSP and start monitoring\logging the various sensors\switches to see which signals you're missing..... once you know what else to look at, you can start looking at wiring\connectors and look at replacing components.

#5 ·
I think I will drop the transmission pan, I will replace the filter, also I will drop the valve body from the transmission and replaced the fluid pressure sensor since it is coming up as an error here:
(17229 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch 2)VAG 09D 919 081 - Automatic transmission oil pressure switch.

This sensor costs like $55, I am almost sure it is the cause of the shifitting issue.

#6 ·
If you want to do it right, do it systematically instead of loading up the parts cannon. Your code tells you it's an electrical issue. Until you source wiring diagrams and validate contacts/wiring, you could potentially be replacing a working switch and still have the issue.

The fact that it's intermittent is also typically indicative of a flaky connection. You should be able to log/monitor its measurement to see the signal drop etc even before inspecting the actual wiring.

#7 ·
I think there is a misunderstanding on "intermittent" , regardless of the wording the car is not drivable as the transmission never shifts past 4th gear. I have to drop the transmission pan anyway to do a fluid/filter change. Those pressure switches are cheap, they range from $38 to $55, since I am already there in the transmission, I think it is worthy to replace them anyhow.

#8 ·
You have the tool to either confirm my misunderstanding of the word or to validate your assumption without taking anything apart. It's not my vehicle or money so your chosen approach won't affect me at all. You asked for input, it's been given. Hopefully you don't guess wrong and end up wasting both time/fluid/money if replacing an inexpensive switch doesn't solve the issue.

#9 ·
This is all correct, don't get me wrong, I truly appreciate your input, it is valid and helpful.
Upon resetting the error it immediately comes back, as I mentioned, I need to do a transmission service anyhow.
I will definitely check all the connectors and wires by the transmission as well.
Thank you.
:)

#11 ·
I believe you are correct, all my research using VCDS and online resources points to the oil pressure switches. G193 and G194 pictured below. I will do a transmission fluid service and filter, then replace them both and see what happens.

Image

#12 ·
Yesterday I replaced both G193 and G194 Pressure sensors. Reset all DTCs with VCDS drove the car, same issue. When I get to 4th gear, it only rev up or down.
These sensors were identical, there was no information which one goes where.
I did scan back after a quick drive, I got only this message related to transmission.

17229 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch 2
P0845 - 003 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent - MIL ON

SaVAGeSoot

i did warn you in #6 and #8 above, but you wanted to do it your way!
I told you to log signals and to check WDs.....
What's your plan now? "

I Did get the SSP however it did not offer much of clue. I am still researching... If you have any additional advise or input it is greatly appreciated.
For now I found this information on the SSD I believe it is something worth looking in to it.

Thank you.

#17 ·
There are clues in all of the above. Pay attention to "electrical" malfunction.
Pay attention to you need WIRING DIAGRAMS
Pay attention to the SSP.... how are these two sensors wired? See the shared ground? So if only one of the two is giving you a code, what else could it be if it's not THE GROUND? Could it be "the other wire"?

Did you log signals like I suggested to see what it reveals?
Did you go to erwin or mitchel or your library or anywhere to obtain wiring diagrams to review?
You can't test\trace connections if you don't know where and what to look at.

#25 ·
We do not like that just so you know.
Who is this "we" you are speaking for? Definitely not myself.

@SaVAGeSoot reminds me a lot of the members of a fairly well known 4x4 website who were known web-wide for not putting up with BS or people with thin-skin.

Come on over and party @ www.irate4x4.com @SaVAGeSoot. You'll fit right in (but the VW hate is strong over there). 😆

#30 ·
Hello Tregers,
I am still chasing this issue, no fix yet. Does any of you have a tip how to test these components? What I have tested so far checks out.
I did change the fluid and filter as well as both pressure sensors.
When I replaced them, there was no guidance which one goes where, they both look the same. Is it possible they are switched around??
Car still not driveable.

#34 ·
Remember when you replaced the switches? There was only one wire that you connected to them! The ground, was the actual valve body that they screwed into!

So there should've been a "boot" connection that you would've pushed onto the switch after you replaced it.
If you would've listened originally, you'd ideally want to check for continuity between that connection and the respective pin on the 8 pin case connector on the side of the transmission in order to see that there are no issues in that wire\harness.
So now, this means you have to drop your pan and waste your new fluid to check that. (or hop into your DeLorean and go back in time to listen to me the first time)

#35 ·
🤣🤣🤣 My Delorean has a broken transmission as well 🤣🤣🤣

This weekend I will test those connectors on the back of the transmission, if they check out ok, I will check again in the connector at the TCM just to make sure the integrity is all the way thru.
Thanks.
