my 2006 V10 with 25000miles has developed a clunking as i pull away it doesnt happen all the time probably once or twice on a long run and only at slow speeds it seems to be transmission engaging with drive train Ive had a full electronic diagnostic at VW and apart from a battery failure nothing was noted any ideas I now have a after market warranty but I would like to have a insight

Only 25,000 miles?

Maybe you're not driving it enough? :p

In all seriousness though I don't see there being many major problems at that low mileage. Theres a possibility that the universal joints may have rusted and bonded a bit for sitting and not moving so much :p lol

Could Be the driveshaft bearring. There are a Lot of posts. Had the Same with my 2006 V10 at 60000 km

I'm afraid, but the driveshaft bearing will fail very often at ~65000 km
A lot of post here and in the German touareg forum.
For my understanding this will show up on cars with a lot
of "Autobahn usage" ;-)

Same with early porsche Cayennes. Porsche changed
the driveshaft so it's fixed for the Cayenne but afaik not
for the Treg.

By the way if the bearing fails you need to
change the complete driveshaft. The part costs
~650 € here in Germany.

Your profile doesn't say where you are. Are you running transmission settings for North America or ROW? Some of us have noticed a bit of a jerk starting from a stop on uphill as the tranny hill-holder releases (ROW setting). Shouldn't clunk though.

I do feel quite stupid as it all adds up now, the clunking sound started around the time I fitted a new set of tyres to the front axle. The local trye company had run out of Grabbers which were fitted on the rear and I really needed some fitting quickly they put a similar pair Kuoni ? which were cheaper but same spec it seems that not all tyres standard even if they say they state a certain size and the slight difference in overall diameter was causing the centre diff confusion hence the clunking the fronts scrubed out in 10,000 miles Im now back on Grabbers which are fantastic in snow wet and at high speed

Tregs are VERY sensitive to a mix of different tyre diameters.

All four tyres should always be the same manufacturer, type and model name.

Tyre sizes are nominal and the diameter of different manufacturers can vary.

There should be no more than 2 mm difference between tyres on the same axle and no more than 3 mm difference between tyres on the front and rear axles.
